LATE SHOW NEWS #176 October 28, 1997 by Aaron Barnhart NOTE: This issue gets an I for incomplete. Not much happening, as can be expected during a week when three hosts are on vacation and a fourth is getting his walking papers. I even waited until Wednesday for more news to land at my feet -- not a chance. Cindy Crawford is your "Later" host for sweeps, six weeks total ... As part of Rupert Murdoch's acquisition of The Family Channel, "The 700 Club" has been bumped out of prime time -- into the slot previously occupied by "Carson's Comedy Classics," which appears now to be off the schedule ... In Dallas-Ft. Worth, "Vibe" has been downgraded from 9 p.m. to midnight ... Reader mail: German reader Woolwo@aol.com saw the Conan O'Brien appearance last week on "Die Harald Schmidt Show" and called it "weird to say the least. Conan and Harald didn't connect very well and the jokes he made were quite awkward translated into German. Conan didn't seem at ease and seemed to be asking himself what he was doing at a Letternman rip-off (which he corroborated in a newspaper story today). Schmidt showed once more that his strength isn't interviewing but comedy. Last not least: why should there be a cross-promotion for a show airing opposite Schmidt's ? No one else knows Conan around these parts!" And Gerald Sim, weighing in on overnight news, writes, "While 'Up to the Minute' is invariably more reliable for straight up news 'so I can catch up and go to bed,' I'm sure that the more constant viewers find appeal in instances when they stray. Undoubtedly, the insomniacs or late sleepers who watch these shows have different expectations of late-night news. A special bond forms between people who are up at those hours, and the affection for the overnight news presenters is something you don't really find with evening news personalities. I miss Nanette Hansen. I enjoy it when Anderson Cooper shows up occasionally to show how nerds can be studly. I for one enjoy the banter on 'World News Now.' It's mostly issue-oriented and when it's not, it still ranks above the triteness of, say, Regis and Kathie Lee." *** Tom Heald's THIS NIGHT IN HISTORY Exclusive to LATE SHOW NEWS Tu 10/28: In 1966, "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" sidekick Andy Richter is born. Richter is one of the few souls whose career was actually helped by being in "Cabin Boy." We 10/29: In 1977, on "Saturday Night Live," the Coneheads dispense fried chicken embryos and beer to trick-or-treaters, while in "Consumer Probe with Joan Face" Irwin Mainway displays such dangerous Halloween costumes as "Johnny Space Commander Mask" (a plastic dry cleaning bag and a rubber band), and "Johnny Human Torch" (a bag of oily rags and a giant cigarette lighter). Both sketches wind up on the video compilation "The Best of Dan Aykroyd." Th 10/30: In 1995, the pants of "Late Show with David Letterman" audience member Wayne Haseltine begin their journey across America from New York to Los Angeles, a harbinger of the "Late Show's" second trip to L.A. Fr 10/31: In 1995, in what is Julia Sweeney's *last* public appearance as the character, "Saturday Night Live's" androgynous "Pat" is Hollywood's honorary "Mayor for the Day." Sa 11/1: In 1993, musicians Bruce Kapler and Tom "Bones" Malone officially join the CBS Orchestra on "Late Show with David Letterman." Su 11/2: In 1991, on on "Saturday Night Live," "Daily Affirmations" host Stuart Smalley is visited by his Canadian cousin Leon, who's ripped off Stuart's show with "Today's Daily Meditation with Leon Smalley" because "I'm joyful, I'm happy, and goshdarnit, I'm free!" Mo 11/3 In 1953, Dennis Miller exits his mother's womb with the cry, "That's the placenta, and I... am... outta here!!!"
