THIS WEEK AT THE TV BARN http://tvbarn.com February 15-21, 1999 ------------------------ To join or leave this mailing list, see end of message. ------------------------ Last night ... Friday night on the 'Late Late Show,' guest Bob Costas blew me away with the mention that some version of 'Later' with 'the best of Bob Costas' will be running on NBC throughout June and July. The shows will include new openings and some form of update. Plus, several episodes will be majorly re-edited, mainly to add 'lost footage,' and some will be composed entirely of never-before-seen segments. While I do look forward to saying 'Hi, Bob!' again, I can't help but cringe when I realize that this means 'Later with ...' anybody else will still be on until then." Except that, as I reported last month, reruns of "SCTV" will likely return to NBC late-late nights sometime in March. Late Show News The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer has signed with Nickelodeon to conduct a nationwide search for 12- to 17-year-old musicians who will make up "TV's first all-kid house band." Shaffer will also serve as music director for the ensemble, which is expected to play at Nick's Kid Choice Awards and other venues ... Jay Leno will drive the pace car at the Indy 500 in May. I fully expect Letterman to make an appearance in Sturgis, S.D., come the next Harley get-together. Reader Mail Damone writes, "Have you caught any of the new 'Later's' with Jerry O'Connell? Let's just say it made me long for the wit and intellectualism of the Kinnear years. His first two days of interviews were with young starlets, and I've never actually seen sexual harassment on screen before this. He was all over them. Every third sentence out of his mouth was something along the lines of "You're so hot tonight." If you haven't caught it yet, it is worth it just for the proof that there was someone worse than Greg." Mike Huspeni writes, "Did you watch 'MAD TV' on Saturday night? There were two different sequences where their guest, Brett 'The Hit Man' Hart, beat the crap out of Will Sasso, and ranted about how much he hated 'fatso Sasso' after a 1998 show where Sasso tried to lift up Hart. I honestly couldn't tell if it was scripted, or an outburst by Hart on camera, because all the cast abandoned their character once Brett started raging. For example, Deb Wilson tore off a wig when Brett wrenched her arm." Unbeknownst to him, Mike was observing a two-part cross-promotion for "MAD TV" and the WCW. Two nights later, it was Sasso's turn to show up on TNT's "WCW Monday Night" and cause a ruckus that ended with the Hitman "losing" his title ... Ann Miner of the Talkin' Broadway website confirmed what we'd suspected last week: the Fresh Step group that appeared on a recent "Late Show" is just a big put-on. "Three of the 'members' of Fresh Step are Broadway performers from Footloose (Jeremy Kushnier, Jamie Gustis, and Brad Madison) and supposedly have signed a contract with Letterman for future appearances. I'm not sure if any of these three guys were in the Broadway spoof, but they very well could have been."
