NICKELODEON ACQUIRES SESAME WORKSHOP'S 50% INTEREST IN NOGGIN

Network Joins MTV Networks' Stable of Wholly Owned Channels

Noggin, Sesame Workshop Enter Multi-Year Production Agreement

Santa Monica, CA, August 7, 2002 - Nickelodeon and Sesame Workshop have
signed an agreement in which Nickelodeon has acquired Sesame Workshop's 50%
interest in Noggin, pending customary regulatory approvals, it was announced
today by Tom Freston, Chairman, MTV Networks. Mr. Freston also announced
that the 24-hour network for kids and tweens will be operated and managed by
Nickelodeon, reporting to Herb Scannell, President, Nickelodeon, TV Land and
The New TNN.

Launched in February 1998, Noggin is now seen more than 25 million homes via
cable, digital cable and satellite television, and will continue its mission
to educate and help kids figure out their lives and the world around them.
Noggin General Manager Tom Ascheim will continue to oversee the network's
day-to-day operations, reporting to Mr. Scannell. Noggin will maintain its
commercial-free format of award-winning preschool programming from 6 am-6 pm
followed by its tween-targeted block "The N" from 6 pm-6 am. Noggin will
also continue to operate its two websites for preschoolers (www.noggin.com)
and tweens (www.the-n.com) as key components in its programming philosophy.

"We are thrilled to have Noggin fully in our family," Freston said. "The
cable and satellite industry loves Noggin - it's got great distribution and
it's been a real asset in the marketing of digital television. Noggin is
another strong youth brand for our company to have under our umbrella. The
network does a terrific job connecting with young people."

Added Herb Scannell, "We are very proud of our relationship with Sesame
Workshop in conceiving and launching Noggin, and we look forward to
developing more original series for the network with them in the years to
come. Noggin has already experienced tremendous creative growth with its
fresh approach in developing original series such as "A Walk in Your Shoes,"
"Play With Me Sesame" and "Degrassi: The Next Generation" to complement its
award-winning library of programming from Sesame Workshop and Nickelodeon.
We look forward to continuing to build Noggin on its path to becoming a
leading channel for kids and tweens."

"We are very proud of our role in co-founding Noggin. It has created an
opportunity to make some of our best award-winning shows from our library
available again." said Gary Knell, President and CEO of Sesame Workshop.
"We felt the time was right to change our relationship with Nickelodeon and
use the proceeds from this transaction to launch research, development and
content around our exciting global agenda to foster respect and
understanding among children."

Nick Acquires Sesame Workshop 50% Interest in Noggin - Page 2

Nickelodeon has entered into a multi-year agreement for the development of
new original series for Noggin with Sesame Workshop. Noggin's programming
lineup will continue to feature the library of educational series from
Sesame Workshop, including prior seasons of its gold standard, Sesame
Street, for three more years. Play with Me Sesame, the new original
interactive program based on Sesame Street, will continue to be produced and
run exclusively on Noggin for seven years.

Noggin will also continue to feature co-produced series from Nickelodeon and
Sesame Workshop as part of its regular programming lineup. These series
include Sponk!, a comedy improvisational series for 8- to 12-year-olds that
helps kids develop their ability to solve problems, cooperate, and think
creatively; Tiny Planets, a fantastical comic adventure series that
stimulates the curiosity of children three to six about the world around
them; and Two Down Under, a program that uses the combined power of
television and the web to develop resilience in 9-14-year-olds.

In April, Noggin repositioned itself by extending its preschool programming
block and introducing a tween-targeted block. The daytime block (6 AM to 6
PM), titled "Noggin," features award-winning programming for preschoolers
including the new interactive program Play With Me Sesame as well as
acclaimed series such as Blue's Clues, Little Bear and the original Sesame
Street. The evening block (6 PM to 6 AM), titled "The N," introduced
original and acquired series targeted to and designed for tweens (ages
9-14), including Degrassi: The Next Generation, that offers honest,
true-to-life programming that speaks directly to that age group.

Nickelodeon, now in its 23rd year, is the number-one entertainment brand for
kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in
everything it does. The company includes television programming and
production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer
products, online, recreation, books, magazines, music and feature films.
Nickelodeon's U.S. television network is seen in more than 85 million
households and has been the number-one-rated basic-cable network for more
than six consecutive years.

Sesame Workshop is a not-for-profit educational organization that stands
alone in its ability to creatively help meet major educational and
developmental needs that affect children around the world. For over 30
years, the Workshop has created innovative and engaging media to help
children reach their highest potential. The organization grounds its work
in research to understand how multi-media platforms help children learn,
develop and grow. Best known as the creators of Sesame Street, Dragon Tales
and Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat airing on PBS, the Workshop continues to
break new ground with Noggin, the only 24-hour kids' thinking channel. Find
the Workshop online at www.sesameworkshop.org.

I never understood the appeal of MHMH, either. It was indeed ground
breaking and no doubt paved the way for shows like Fernwood, but I don't
think I watched more than one episode the entire time it was on. I recall
being in the minority at the time, but then again many viewers hated
Fernwood with equal gusto.

TVbarn has a link to the recent Slate piece on why Eisner should be fired (I
love the line "But like Neil Diamond, Eisner has been living off his early

LA times. While his control fetish and outlandish compensation are obvious
targets, it seems he would still be a wall street darling if ABC was
performing bettter. I am curious if there is a magazine article or book out
there somewhere that systematically examines the causes of ABC's decline? As
a casual observer it seems that the over-relaince on WWTBAM is a big part of
the problem - but there must be other factors, and explanations for the
WWTBAM strategy. Where might one read more about this, and about the Mouse's
chances of bouncing back?

I don't know of any other articles, but the other major
contributor to ABC's decline was over-reliance on Touchstone Television
productions. Eisner demanded ABC air more stuff produced by Disney, when
those shows weren't as good as shows from other producers, as a result,
many outside producers felt that ABC is not worth dealing with.

But keep in mind, I'm not anything like an insider, just a couch
potato.

Or Disney was demanding part ownership of outside producers' shows--although
it seems that *everyone* wants that nowadays--most of the networks' new
shows are owned or, in most cases, partly owned by the network or a division
of the corporation that owns the network. ABC may've been unbending on
Disney part-ownership and the terms thereof.

And it should be pointed out that "Millionaire" is owned by Disney in North
America--and I honestly thought that Disney would've bought out the Celador
production company that created "Millionaire" by now.

Subject: Govt. TIPS calls answered by "America's Most Wanted"

In Surreal Development, Bush Administration
Routes TIPS Calls to TV Show "America's Most Wanted"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tuesday, August 6, 2002

WASHINGTON - In a development bordering on what the American Civil
Liberties Union called "surreal," the on-line magazine Salon.com today
revealed that the Department of Justice is forwarding incoming Operation
TIPS calls to the Fox-owned "America's Most Wanted" television series.
"This is like retaining Arthur Andersen to do all of the SEC's
accounting," said Rachel King, an ACLU Legislative Counsel. "It's a
completely inappropriate and frightening intermingling of government
power and the private sector. What's next - the government hires Candid
Camera to do its video surveillance?"
"If it continues to cooperate with the government on Operation TIPS,
America's Most Wanted should move networks and rename itself 'Big
Brother,'" King said.
The author of the Salon article, David Lindorff, reportedly signed up
for TIPS more than a month ago, heard nothing and followed up last week
with a phone call to the Department of Justice, the agency responsible
for overseeing the proposed program. The department gave Lindorff
another phone number, which it said had been set up by the FBI. When he
dialed that number, Lindorff was greeted by a receptionist for
"America's Most Wanted," which features reenactments of unsolved crimes
and then asks the public to phone in leads and tips.
Shocked that the number did not connect to the FBI, Lindorff was told,
"We've been asked to take the FBI's TIPS calls for them." The ACLU today
said that, not only does the Operation TIPS program on its own pose
serious threats to the American ideal that neighbors not be expected to
inform on neighbors, but the program, when coupled with the power and
profit incentives of television, could enhance its resemblance to Big
Brother through sensationalism and the thirst for advertising revenue.
Even before its partnering with Fox Television, the Operation TIPS
program has come under a barrage of criticism from both the left and the
right. House Majority Leader Richard Armey (R-TX), one of the most
powerful and conservative members of Congress, introduced a measure in
his chamber's version of the Homeland Security legislation that would
prohibit the implementation of TIPS and other similar measures. Sen.
Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has
also opposed the proposal, saying "We could be vigilant, but we don't
want to be vigilantes."
"Why stop with America's Most Wanted?" King added. "If a sensational
story is what it was looking for, the Department of Justice should have
just hired Jerry Springer as its public information officer."

If you saw the first two eps of "MHMH," you were immediately hooked because
they were brilliant. Afterwards, the quality went up and down, just like
any daytime soap. If you jumped into the show in the middle, you could very
well wonder what the hell all the fuss was about, especially as that second
and last (as "MHMH") season wore on. But the show's highs were truly highs,
especially almost anything involving Mary Kay Place's Loretta Haggers
character, which is still one of my favorite television comedy characters.
It's a shame that Place has never done anything since that topped her work
on "MHMH."

August 12, broadcast is "Morrie Schwartz, from best-seller 'Tuesdays with

This past Monday was a rebroadcast of one of the "Left Behind" co-authors,
from the PREVIOUS Monday, July 29, as it was preempted in some areas by

Given that "Monday Night Football" routinely runs long, does anyone else get

CBS ANNOUNCES A NATIONWIDE SEARCH FOR PARTICIPANTS
FOR "THE AMAZING RACE 4"

One of Twelve Couples on A Worldwide Journey
Will Outwit The Others And Win $1 Million
In Reality Adventure Series

Application Forms are Available Exclusively on CBS.com

CBS today announced a nationwide search for participants in
THE AMAZING RACE 4,
the fourth edition of the reality adventure series which pits 12
pairs of American couples against
one another in a trek around the globe, and rewards the team that
reaches the final destination
first with a $1 million prize.

THE AMAZING RACE 3 will have its broadcast premiere Wednesday, Oct. 2 (9:00-
10:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network. Last season, THE
AMAZING RACE 2
outperformed THE AMAZING RACE 1 in households and all key demos. The
adventure reality
series increased +8% in households (6.4/10 vs. 5.9/9), +17% in
viewers (10.32m vs. 8.81m),
+24% in adults 18-49 (4.6 vs. 3.7), +23% in adults 25-54 (4.9 vs.
4.0) and +31% in adults 18-34
(4.2 vs. 3.2).

Diverse cities and countries spanning the globe will again provide
the stage for the next
edition of the reality series from producers Jerry Bruckheimer
("CSI," "Pearl Harbor") and
Bertram van Munster ("Cops," "Wild Things").

The couples will be selected from a diverse group of people
representing a broad cross-
section of American society. The participants should have a unique
and a prior relationship with
their teammate, such as grandfather/grandchild, two best friends,
fraternity brothers,
boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife or virtually any other
combination. No prior travel
experience is necessary.

Application forms for the reality adventure series are
available exclusively at CBS.com.
Applications are being accepted now through September 20, 2002 and
must be accompanied by a
three-minute videotape that includes both teammates and proof of
valid U.S. passports.
Producers will then narrow down the applicants and hit the road in
October to conduct interviews
with couples in several cities across the United States.
Semi-finalist teams will then be invited to
attend final auditions in Los Angeles in November. A final
elimination will form the group of
12 couples who will be chosen to participate in the series.

CBS Television...2

Each couple will have to compete in challenges, and only when
the tasks have been
completed will they learn their next destination. Couples will
gradually be eliminated as the
contest progresses, with the first team to arrive at the final
destination winning $1 million.

The couples will be filmed 24 hours a day, chronicling their
journey and the conflicts and
deepening friendships that develop through the competition. Each
couple will be on a strict
budget, and will have to fend for themselves and the camera crew
assigned to them. In some
cases, the budget may be so limited, they may be forced to sleep on
park benches or use their
imagination to conserve their limited funds. In addition, airplane
travel will be restricted and the
contestants will have to rely on alternate means of transportation:
buses, trains, taxis, bicycles,
camels and, most important, their own wits to get to their next destination.

Jerry Bruckheimer and Bertram van Munster are the executive
producers; Hayma
Screech Washington and Scott Einziger are co-executive producers for

Anyway CBC Radio here in Sudbury, Ontario wanted to do a story on it

Well, even better, it looks like Salon didn't let facts get in the way of a
story. Here's a message from NPR technology correspondent Larry Abramson:

I don't know whether anyone else has looked into this, but I did.
America's Most Wanted says, this never happened, that the Salon account is
completely wrong. And according to DOJ, the TIPS program is still a concept
awaiting Congressional approval (which is probably not forthcoming. So
there's no actual phone number to call, not yet.

Ice-T promoting ice cream. The notion just begs for some joking. But the West
Coast rap legend says his latest endeavor, as spokesperson for Posse Pops, is
a serious undertaking — he wants to teach the youth.

"You gotta remember, I don't make music for kids," Ice said Wednesday after a
press conference in New York's Clinton Park to announce his collaboration
with Planet Ice Cream Inc., the pops' creators. "My sh-- is for adults. How
do I talk to a kid, really? What's the one thing kids universally run to?
That damn [ice cream] truck.

"All of us, although we may talk rowdy on records, we all got kids," he
continued. "It's a chance for us to say, 'No matter how rowdy we get, when
we're with our crew, we know what's right and wrong,' and give it back. A lot
of people may be like, 'Yo, you're challenging your image.' Nah, real n---as
know what's real."

Posse Pops founder Richard Brown recognized T's authentic persona and
enlisted the multimedia hustler to align himself with the company. The ice
cream pops have messages outside and inside the wrapper, and T says they are
soon going to include cards of different artists, similar to baseball trading
cards, with personal words of wisdom for the youngsters.

"He said, 'Nah, I want Ice-T,' " Ice began to explain of what led him to work
with Brown. " 'I want somebody that will go in and talk to the hard head
kids, 'cause that's who needs the messages.' I was excited because people
like myself — gangsta rappers, hardcore rappers — we don't get approached
with things like that. People don't invite us to the kids' events. I was
like, 'Yeah! Hell yeah!' It's taking off."

Two of the Posse Pops' three flavors are "Wild Thang" and "Knock You Out,"
which are vanilla ice cream with milk chocolate coating, and which promote
safe sex and warn against drug use, respectively. Meanwhile, "Blowin' Up" is
peanut butter with dark chocolate coating, and includes messages about
staying in school.

The desserts, which range from $1.49 to $1.99, are currently being sold in
mom-and-pop stores and delis and should soon pop up in major retail food
stores. Ice says plans are being made to give one-third of the profits to
programs for urban youth.

Ice is also getting his face seen through a television program for adults.
He's in his third year of playing a detective on "Law & Order: Special
Victims Unit."

"That's fun to do," he said. "I'm happy over there."

He'll be even more joyous if he gets an untitled movie into production. He
wrote the script and wants to direct it. Until then, Ice is staying all
smiles working with Smoothe Da Hustler and Trigger Tha Gambler, who are most
known for making their classic underground duet "Broken Language" in 1996.
The three have formed a group called SMG (Sex, Money and Guns) and are
working on a debut to drop early next year. N.O.R.E. and Gang Starr's Guru
and are among the guests on the album.

"The way we bringing it, East and West coast n---as together is real
gangsta," Ice said of working with the brother combination from Brooklyn, New
York. "Both of us bring out the best in each other. They got my style ... I'm
flowing real radical and crazy. I got their game up to par."

Subject: Oz - The Wire - Homicide - The Corner

From HBO
For Immediate Release
"WASN'T HE ON...?": TALENT OF NEW HBO SERIES THE WIRE HAS CONNECTIONS TO
"OZ," "THE CORNER" AND "HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET"

When THE WIRE debuted on HBO in June, many viewers may have recognized names
and faces from some of their favorite shows. They may have thought they knew
Lance Reddick from "Oz," or believed they had seen him in "The Corner." They
would have been right on both counts.

Thanks to David Simon, creator and executive producer of THE WIRE (as well as
executive producer of "The Corner"), and Tom Fontana, who worked on "Oz" and
"Homicide: Life on the Street," many talented East Coast dramatic actors have
been able to work closer to home. By the same token, East Coast productions
with large casts, like "Oz," "Homicide: ife on the Street" and "The Corner,"
have benefited by being able to draw on a large pool of nearby talent. And it
is not uncommon in television, film and theater for producers and directors
to use the same actors more than once. "All producers want to work with
actors they have had good experiences with again," says Alexa Fogel, casting
director for both THE WIRE and "Oz." "But of course it has to fit."

So exactly how are the people behind THE WIRE connected to these series?
"Homicide: Life on the Street," the first of these shows to air, was set and
produced in Baltimore, as are both "The Corner" and THE WIRE. Former
Baltimore Sun reporter David Simon wrote the book "Homicide: A Year on the
Killing Streets," on which the Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson series was
based. He first worked as a writer and later as a producer on the NBC series,
which marked his TV debut.

Clark Johnson, who directed several episodes of THE WIRE, also worked on
"Homicide" as both an actor and director. In addition, the following actors
(with their roles on THE WIRE listed in parenthesis) also appeared on
"Homicide": Peter Gerety (Judge Phelan), Callie Thorne (Elena McNulty), Larry
Gilliard, Jr. (D'Angelo) and Erik Todd Dellums (Bryan "Doc" Frazier).

In 1993, Simon began work on his next book, "The Corner: A Year in the Life
of an Inner- City Neighborhood," published in 1997, the same year Fontana and
Levinson brought "Oz" to HBO. Simon's book, co-written with former Baltimore
homicide detective Edward Burns, became the basis for HBO's Emmy®-winning
six-hour miniseries "The Corner." Much of the team from "The Corner"
currently works on THE WIRE. David Simon and Robert Colesberry are executive
producers of both shows, while Nina Kostroff Noble serves as producer for
both. Edward Burns is now a writer for THE WIRE. Among the actors from "The
Corner" now working on THE WIRE are Lance Reddick (Lt. Daniels), Clarke
Peters (Det. Freamon), Corey Parker-Robinson (Det. Sydnor) and Clayton Le
Bouef (Orlando).

Although he calls Tom Fontana both a friend and mentor, David Simon has no
connection to "Oz." However, THE WIRE features a number of actors previously
on "Oz," including, again, Lance Reddick (Lt. Daniels) and Domenick
Lombardozzi (Det. "Herc" Hauk), plus Seth Gilliam (Det. Carver), Clarke
Peters (Det. Freamon), John Doman (Major Rawls) and JD Williams (Bodie).

Casting director Alexa Fogel explains, "The size of the ‘Oz' cast is the
thing that is most unusual -- an ongoing group of 30-plus that shifts and
changes throughout the seasons. It is inevitable that a casting director
would consider some of these actors for another show. But all of these actors
auditioned for their roles, so maybe the cream rises to the top in both
cases."

In "Oz," Lance Reddick appeared as a cop who goes undercover to infiltrate
the drug trade in the prison. He ends up addicted to heroin and finally gets
killed. "Alexa knew my work from ‘Oz' and really believed that I'd fit in THE
WIRE," says Reddick. "But you have to read for it, you know? I didn't think I
got the part at first."

When he did get the call, Reddick met some familiar faces on set. "It's a
bonus to work with Seth [Gilliam] again," Reddick says. "On ‘Oz,' he went
crazy and killed me. Now I'm his boss." He also points out that actors work
with the same actors in different roles as early as drama school, so it's not
strange for them. "It's cool coming here to THE WIRE after working with a lot
these people. There is a certain comfort level."

KJB wrote…
Well, even better, it looks like Salon didn't let facts get in the way of a
story. Here's a message from NPR technology correspondent Larry Abramson:

I don't know whether anyone else has looked into this, but I did.
America's Most Wanted says, this never happened, that the Salon account is
completely wrong. And according to DOJ, the TIPS program is still a concept
awaiting Congressional approval (which is probably not forthcoming. So
there's no actual phone number to call, not yet.

PGage writes…
A couple of things. In response to the first post, the whole TIPS proposal
(and the idea of formal participation by a tv show like America's Most
Wanted) is most certainly a big deal, and a huge mistake. The TIPS
(Terrorist Information and Prevention System) idea is to have delivery
people, utility workers, cable installers, and others whose jobs allow them
access to private residences to report "suspicious" activity to the
government. Essentially this allows the government to conduct warrant-less
searches and invade the privacy of anyone who seems a little "different" or
"strange" to the guy who comes to fix your cable. While I got the above
description of TIPS from the ACLU, it is not just liberals who oppose this
program - Dick Armey, not-so-liberal House Majority Leader is against it as
well. The opposition has been so broad based that yesterday the Justice
Department announced that it was scaling back the program to exclude workers
who enter private residences, and focus on workers who operate on the
highways, such as truck drivers, and at the ports of entry. Justice has also
delayed implementation of the program (it was supposed to start this month)
to allow for more consultation with congress. Even the proposed modified form
of the program is a dangerous invasion of privacy and disregard of due
process by the federal government, and I hope the whole idea is eventually
scrapped. It is one thing when a tv show like AMW shows no concern for the
rights of those accused of crimes, but to involve their despicable (but
borderline legal) disregard with programs of the Justice Department would be
intolerable.

Second, the Salon article seems to have been garbled several times in the
re-telling. David Lindorff wrote that he had signed up for TIPS, not heard
anything from them, and then called the Justice Department (**NOT** the TIPS
number). Lindorff reports that the Justice department gave him another number
(still **NOT** the TIPS number) that it said had been set up by the FBI.
Lindorff wrote that when he called that number, someone from America's Most
Wanted answered and, in response to the obvious question said, quote "We've
been asked to take the FBI's TIPS calls for them". On Larry King last night
Walsh vehemently denied that AMW was part of TIPS, attacked the ACLU and the
salon article, but did not specifically address the assertion made in the
article (that is, he did not comment on whether or not the Justice Department
was referring callers inquiring about TIPS to AMW - which is all that the
salon article asserts). Larry King, not surprisingly, did not follow up.

So, while it is true that TIPS has not yet been implemented, this has nothing
to do with whether or not Lindorff's assertions in his salon article are
accurate.

Man Convicted of Harassing QVC Host

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A jury convicted a man of harassing a QVC home shopping
network host by going to her home last year, but found him innocent of
stalking her.

Phillip M. Young, 52, also was convicted of trespassing and found innocent of
attempted burglary Thursday. He could face up to 18 months in jail when he is
sentenced later this year.

Young, of Phoenix, was arrested Dec. 3 after Pat DeMentri found him on the
front porch of her Washington Township home.

Prosecutors said Young flew to New Jersey, rented a car and drove to
DeMentri's home. He then rang her doorbell, and when Young identified himself
through an intercom, she called 911.

After his arrest, police found two boxes containing engagement and wedding
rings strapped to Young's chest. Prior to going to her home, Young sent
DeMentri two telegrams that said she was giving him permission to visit by
signing for them.

At the time, Young told police that he hoped DeMentri would help him meet
Lisa Robertson, a QVC host to whom he had sent letters, gifts and a honeymoon
brochure.

Young still faces charges in Pennsylvania stemming from a telegram he sent to
Jane Treacy, another QVC host.

He also sent letters to another QVC host, Kathy Levine, in 1997.

In 1998, Young was convicted in Arizona of stalking. He was sentenced to
three years' probation and ordered to not have contact with employees of the
shopping channel.

With news items like this, I don't have to read The Onion anymore.

On another matter, does anyone know the status of "Primetime Glick"?? It seems to have been bumped a few weeks ago from its original Saturday evening slot to various fringe slots on Comedy Central. Is it cancelled or hiatusized or hypmotized or what? Anyone?

Lastly, a reminder/suggestion as much to myself as to the list, this new Cartoon Network series "Harvey Birdman" (tonight 1130EDT) is about 6 shows into its debut season and is turning into a real gem. Birdman is a lawyer in a manic court room full of cartoon characters across different eras dissing and suing each other and generally spilling each others dirty laundry.

That the show can happen at all (with all these revered and bankable "properties" all gathered in one show, often in unflattering portrayals to say the least) is the only benefit to corporate mega-mergers I've ever encountered.

Barry and his staff (including the redoubtable Jerry Beck of

timeslot has been something of a handicap, between the "Adult Swim"
comedies and a block of Hanna-Barbera stuff, but their hard work
will get something of a reward soon when CN moves "Popeye" up to

Fleischer 'toons tended to be squeezed into half-hour blocks like
many pre-1950s shorts, so there were some time edits, however
content -- esp. the authentic Paramount logos, or copies of them
anyhoo -- was the chief thing put back in. In enough cases shorts
with moderately-offensive scenes were simply not shown, much as CN
had earlier done with Warner 'toons with Indian or Mexican
characters, e.g. Speedy Gonzales.

launch a nation-wide grass roots search for the next great country music
singer/songwriter. The contestants' personal lives and stories of their
inspiration behind the music will be uncovered throughout the series. The
grand-prize winner will be rewarded with a recording contract from Universal
Music Group.

USA Network's President Doug Herzog said, "Country music is a genre that
really resonates with our audience. It's great to be able to tap into the
resources of the Universal family by teaming with the Universal Music Group

"Country music has transcended its rural roots and its themes are more
timeless than ever," said Chris Sloan, Senior Vice President, alternative
programming. "USA Network provides the perfect venue to tell the real
stories of talented people from all walks of life coming to the mecca of
country music with nothing but a dream and a song. The rich texture of
fledgling artists pursuing their 'Nashville dream' and the rich dynamic of
characters of Music City, USA will be captured for the first time on broad
based television."

"Nashville Star" is the result of three companies under the Universal
umbrella teaming up and combining their strengths for this major country
music talent search. USA Network, Universal Music Group and Reveille
(Universal Television Group's backed production and distribution entity
headed by Ben Silverman) are working together in their mission to find a true
"Nashville Star."

"Nashville Star" is being produced by Reveille in association with Universal
Music Group. George Verschoor ("Real World," "Murder in Small Town X") and
his production company, Noosick Falls Productions, is attached to executive
produce. The limited run event series is scheduled to premiere in the first
or second quarter of 2003 on USA Network.

"It's a fact that television can be a very powerful tool in reaching the
country music fans," said Mark Wright, Executive Vice President and Head of A&
R, MCA Nashville. "The 'Nashville Star' series is a marvelous opportunity
for aspiring artists to get in front of the fans across America and we are
thrilled to be a part of it."

Reveille's CEO Ben Silverman added, "'Nashville Star' will give truly
talented people an opportunity to showcase their abilities. The music and
stories are emotional and real, and that's what makes great television. We
are thrilled to have George Verschoor working with us in making this project
come to life."

"Nashville Star" will speak directly to the legions of fans of the largest
music genre in the United States, as well as those fascinated by the culture
and character of country music. The United States will be scoured for
hopefuls who are ready to pack their bags and see if their talent for both
performing and songwriting are up to the ultimate test. Exploring all
country music styles from traditional country to bluegrass to folk to
hillbilly, this series will be about the contestants and the songs they write
and perform.

The final contestants will compete in Nashville, the undisputed home of
country music. The city itself will become a character as the competitors
steep themselves in the musical legacy of this fabled city. Performers will
be tested everywhere from county fairs to Honky Tonk bars, to the final
crowning concert at a legendary landmark. In the end, only one person will
stand and claim the title of "Nashville Star," judged by a panel of industry
insiders, country legends, and country music fans who will have their voice
heard through major tie-ins with influential radio stations.

"CHRISTOPHER REEVE: COURAGEOUS STEPS" AIRS WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 ON ABC

"Christopher Reeve: Courageous Steps," an ABC special featuring
never-before-seen footage and unmatched access to the acclaimed actor,
director and activist and his family, will chronicle his inspiring personal
battle to walk again. This emotionally compelling story of dignity and
courage narrated by Christopher Reeve himself and directed by Matthew Reeve,
his son, will air WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC
Television Network.

Tracing Reeve's recovery process over the last year, from May 27, 2001 -- the
sixth anniversary of his accident to the present -- the special will focus
with extraordinary intimacy on Reeve's personal life at home with his family,
as they share in his rehabilitative and recreational activities, and offer a
behind-the scenes look at the medical aspects of his recovery, as he works
with his doctors. The special also takes an up-close look at Reeve's role as
an activist on the political frontlines, championing controversial causes
such as stem cell research, as he attempts to make his dream of walking again
come true -- not just for himself, but for countless others who suffer from
paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries and other central nervous system
disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis and ALS.

Reeve, who has been paralyzed since 1995 from a severe spinal cord injury
suffered in an equestrian competition, has hoped he would be able to stand
again by his 50th birthday on September 25 this year. He has struggled to
overcome most conventional medical opinions that he would never walk again,
having been left paralyzed from the neck down and attached to a ventilator
since the accident seven years ago.

Mr. Reeve's disability has not kept him from continuing his career as a
leading actor and director. In 1998, in his first major role since was
paralyzed, he starred in and executive produced an updated version of the
classic Hitchcock thriller, "Rear Window," on ABC, for which he won a Screen
Actors Guild Award and was nominated for a Golden Globe. He made his
directorial debut with HBO's "In the Gloaming" in 1997. The critically
acclaimed film was nominated for five Emmys and won six Cable Ace Awards,
including Best Dramatic Special and Best Director.

Previously Mr. Reeve had distinguished himself in a variety of stage and
screen roles, including the Oscar-nominated "Remains of the Day," "Superman"
and its subsequent sequels, "Deathtrap," "Somewhere in Time," "The
Bostonians" and "Noises Off." His stage credits include "The Marriage of
Figaro," "Fifth of July," "My Life," "Summer and Smoke," "Love Letters" and
"The Aspern Papers."

His 1998 New York Times bestselling autobiography, "Still Me," won a 1999
Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album.

"Christopher Reeve: Courageous Steps" is directed by Matthew Reeve. Stuart
Watts and Ian A. Hunt are the producers. The executive producer is Alastair
Waddington. "Christopher Reeve: Courageous Steps" is a production of TWI and
MXR Productions.

I have had a minidish for about 5 years (prior to that just over the air). As
a treat for the family this summer I added Showtime to our usual HBO/Starz
package; In two months I doubt I have watched more than three programs - and
those were reruns of old movies on TMC. I will be canceling my Showtime at
the end of this month -- but I can't understand how they can compete with
HBO, which has much better original programing, and Starz, which has much
better new movies.

I've got to agree. I bought Showtime late last year for Stargate SG-1
(as well as Isaak, I suppose), and it was underwhelming enough that
we cancelled after the season finale aired. The Dolby Digital 5.1
movies were great (DirecTV), but there were so _few_ of them that
were any good. It was really disappointing.

If my TiVo weren't already full, I'd get HBO... but my TiVo is very full.

Of course, if CNN really wanted to appeal to those Gen-Xers, they would've
had the link be an homage to "Diff'rent Strokes":

They should hire Norm Macdonald to read these tidbits aloud ... now

Well, I suppose I'm the dissenting opinion here. I've got the Showtime
package (along with everything else) and do watch the channels fairly
regularly. I've caught some interesting programming on Showtime Beyond (if
they really wanted to, they could put a sizeable dent in Sci-Fi's audience
but it looks like they're content to stay a niche channel for the moment)
and have been watching Jeremiah and Odyssey 5 on the main channel (although
both of these are repeated on Beyond, there is a widescreen broadcast of
Odyssey 5 on Sunday nights on Showtime that isn't promoted as such).
As for the movies, I really don't care about them. As part of my job I see
most of them in the theaters (where most of them should be seen anyway) and
I don't go out of my way to watch any of them on cable. If there's
something interesting on at the moment and I'm channel grazing, I'll
probably watch it but that's about it. If it's something I like, I've
already gotten it on DVD before it hits cable. So if the "movie" channels
stopped running 90% of their movies tomorrow and started doing original
programming, they would be much more entertaining for me.

Tinky Winky Here, Laa-Laa There ... It's Teletubbies Everywhere! New Series
with Classic Characters Makes US Debut in January 2003

Ragdoll's Innovative New Series to Air on 'PBS KIDS' in Conjunction with
Original Show

NEW YORK, Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Teletubbies are coming -- again!
Ragdoll, creator of international phenomenon Teletubbies, today announced
that their new series TELETUBBIES EVERYWHERE will make its US debut as part
of the PBS KIDS preschool programming block on January 20th, 2003. Each
daily Teletubbies program will open with a 10-minute episode of TELETUBBIES
EVERYWHERE, which premiered in the UK in 2002 on the BBC's digital preschool
channel CBeebies. TELETUBBIES EVERYWHERE focuses on early learning concepts
and features the lovable characters in a completely different format. As a
special Teletubbies treat, Ragdoll will also deliver 20 new Teletubbies
episodes to PBS KIDS for broadcast in 2003.

Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po -- characters beloved by youngsters all
over the world -- appear in a visually unique new studio-based show
TELETUBBIES EVERYWHERE. The 52-episode 10-minute treat-sized programs for
preschool children combine the irresistible humor and comedy of the original
with a non-linear series of simple games, counting exercises, musical
patterns and rhythms specially designed to help develop children's cognitive
skills. Each episode also features a live action segment that showcases
children from around the world, including Russia, South Korea and India.

"The success of Teletubbies all around the world has shown that children
understand the Teletubbies and the Teletubbies understand children
everywhere," said Anne Wood, Founder and Creative Director of Ragdoll. "Our
new programs showcase the faces and activities of children from the many
different countries that continue to join in the fun, and the Teletubbies
demonstrate that the fun of learning is universal."

"The Teletubbies have been essential to PBS KIDS since their debut in 1998,"
said Alyce Myatt, vice president, programming, PBS. "TELETUBBIES EVERYWHERE
is a unique and innovative extension of the original Teletubbies concept that
reinforces important educational concepts in a way that children are sure to
enjoy. The combination of TELETUBBIES EVERYWHERE and the original series
creates a wonderful new viewing experience for children -- I think that kids
will find that watching TELETUBBIES EVERYWHERE is like being out and about,
and when they're done, they get to come home to the Teletubbies in
Teletubbyland..."

TELETUBBIES EVERYWHERE is the latest original series developed by Ragdoll.
Teletubbies, which debuted in 1997, has become one of the most successful
children's programs in history. Toys R Us will unveil an exclusive new line
of Teletubbies plush toys in September 2002, and PBS has a broadcasting
agreement to air the top-rated show through 2008. Dannon Danimals is the
proud sponsor of Teletubbies on PBS KIDS.

A&E Network Announces Phil Keoghan, "The Amazing Race" & Alex Mcleod,
"Trading Spaces," as Hosts of "Best of Both Worlds"; Two One-Hour Specials
Premiere 1st Quarter, 2003

NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug 14, 2002--Phil Keoghan (CBS' "The Amazing
Race") and Alex McLeod (original host of the smash hit "Trading Spaces"),
will serve as hosts of the A&E Special Presentation BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, it
was announced today.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS is one of three new docu-tainment specials (the others
are "Role Reversal" and "It's a Living") to air on A&E in the 2002/03 season.
The specials offer an alternative approach to documentary filmmaking. The
events captured in each of the shows feature a common theme: the behavior is
unscripted, the reactions are genuine and the experiences real.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS, which began production in July, features Keoghan and
McLeod travelling to two great destinations, Hawaii and Hong Kong. However,
there is a catch. One of them will travel via first class throughout the
entire trip, while the other on a limited budget. Their unique journeys will
certainly provide two different perspectives to the locations that they are
visiting. The first site on their adventure is Hawaii, where they visit the
islands of Kauai, Maui, Molokai and Kona. While there, Phil goes kayaking at
the breathtaking Napali Coast, and makes a spiritual journey down the famous
Road To Hana. Alex goes power hangliding in Kauai and they both surf Hawaii's
incredible waves, guided by world renown surfing instructor, Buzzy Kerbox. In
Hong Kong, Keoghan and McLeod are expected to visit traditional food markets,
have high tea at The Peninsula Hotel, one of the world's most exotic hotels,
and tour one of the country's many spectacular monasteries. With BEST OF BOTH
WORLDS, viewers have the opportunity to experience a destination from two
perspectives and can decide who really had the better deal.

"We are thrilled to have such recognizable television personalities as Phil
and Alex, guiding us through this fun-filled adventure," said Maryellen Cox,
Director of Documentary Programming, A&E Network. "And, it doesn't hurt that
they've both been such good sports about everything. I mean, after all, one
of them was going to have to suffer through breathtaking Hawaii...on a
budget."

Phil Keoghan has worked around the world, in over 50 countries, as a
television host, producer, writer, actor and cameraman. Phil hosted the
adventure series, "Go For It;" the FOX morning show, "Fox After Breakfast;"
the 1998 Film Festival Awards for the Sundance Channel and the CBS special
"Surprise, Surprise." As a producer he co-created and co-produced "Keoghan's
Heroes," a show profiling famous thrill seekers around the world; "The Human
Edge," a technology series for National Geographic and "Phil Keoghan's
Adventure Crazy for the Travel Channel. Phil is currently host of the CBS
reality series, "The Amazing Race."

Alex McLeod was born and raised in Galveston, Texas. She has made guest
appearances on the comedies, "Married With Children," "Nightstand,"
"Partners," and "Ned and Stacy." She has also hosted a variety of reality
programs. Alex is the original host of TLC's "Trading Spaces." Prior to
"Trading Spaces" she co-hosted the irreverent and popular "Moviewatch" series
for Channel Four in the UK.

Filming took place on the former prison island of Tarutao in the southernmost

If the (surprisingly quiet) internet snoops are correct two of the names will
be:

Casey Schueler, 27 of Orland Park, IL - the first woman drafted by Major

this prep softball standout and former Depaul hoops player is also daughter of

Tanya Vance of Johnson City, TN - who has a tragedy at home (won't spoil it

an Asian-American woman

Subject: Panel game shows

Following a link from the TVBarn page, I noticed some of Mark
Evanier's comments about watching old panel-type game shows
like "I've Got A Secret" and "What's My Line?" He predicted a
comeback, but said one impediment was a lack of good panelists.

Ironically, I spent two hours this evening watching "To Tell The
Truth" reruns that I had taped during the day from Game Show
Network, which is running TTTT this week in its "Breakfast With The
Stars" block. I am too young to have seen the original Bud Collyer
version, but I grew up with the Garry Moore version, one of my
favorite shows. Today's block included two Garry Moore episodes
(including his farewell show) and two episodes of the early 90s
revival, which I had never seen. One of those was Alex Trebek's
first episode, and he joked that it was the first game show where he
actually got to sit down. They also showed a Lynn Swann episode from
that same version.

But I digress. The recent John O'Hurley / Paula Poundstone / Meshach
Taylor "To Tell The Truth" was too tabloidy for my taste -- they
seemed to bend over backward to get sex-related guests -- but I
thought Meshach Taylor was dynamite. He was a terrific player,
surprisingly well-prepared and able to ask wonderfully-revealing
questions, but he also seemed to be having fun amd realized it was a
game.

Poundstone was also fun, of course, and is always entertaining to
watch. But to me, Taylor had the same sort of razor-sharp quality
that Evanier attributed to Bill Cullen and Bennett Cerf.

John I am with you here, I LOVE panel game shows! Very rarely do I
miss a repeat of Match Game on the Game Show Network, there was an
all new version of the show, I would say around 1998, I could be way
off, it was entertaining (wasn't as good as the original) and even
the early 90's version was OK. I heard that a new one was in
development for this fall, but I guess that never happened.

I would love to see a return to it, I watched the new To Tell the
Truth during the first season, but I didn't watch hardly any of the
second season, it just didn't seem the same for some reason. Paula's
absence may have had something to do with it, but I doubt it, it just

From today's Hollywood Reporter:

NEW YORK -- After six seasons and nearly 400 episodes, Ben Stein won't be
handing out any of his money any more. Comedy Central has canceled "Win Ben
Stein's Money," its long-running game show series hosted by comedian/actor
Ben Stein, citing shrinking ratings. The final batch of new episodes will
air Oct. 28 through December. Launched in 1996 the quiz show featured
contestants vying with Stein for cash.

Myself, I'll be sorry to see it go as it was an interesting twist on the
traditional quiz show concept. I do think the series took a dive when they
lost Jimmy Kimmell as a co-host. His replacement added some T&A factor (a
la Kari Wuhrer on the old "Remote Control") but just didn't bring as much
to the table as Kimmell.

always liked Thompson and I'm glad to see him back in the entertainment biz
(as opposed to the work he was doing, although he was a decent
politician). When i first saw the headline on the Hollywood Reporter web
site, "Thompson to Law & Order", I thought they meant Andrea Thompson, the
former "NYPD Blue" and "Babylon 5" actress who had a pretty spectacular
crash & burn on CNN.

ESPN Pulls Plug on 'Mohr Sports'

.c The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Comedian Jay Mohr says ESPN pulled the plug on his show,
``Mohr Sports.''

The show, which had nine time slot changes in 16 weeks, debuted on April 2
and won't return for a second season, Mohr said during an appearance on CBS'
``The Late Late Show.''

``It's a fancy way of saying canceled, they didn't pick up the second year
option,'' the 31-year-old said. ``But it was a bit of a train wreck from the
beginning.''

Mohr, who infused the show with salacious content, was recruited to Disney's
ESPN from Fox Sports Net.

He co-stars in the comedies ``The Adventures of Pluto Nash,'' opening Friday,
and ``Simone,'' opening Aug. 23.

You missed a cycle. He was an attorney and lobbyist before becoming
an actor.

For those who don't know it, here's the story: Thompson, as an
attorney, worked for Sen. Howard Baker during the Watergate
hearings. Later, after returning to Tennessee, he was involved in
court cases surrounding the departure of Gov. Ray Blanton, who was
brought down for selling pardons.

When a movie was made about the incident, "Marie," starring Sissy
Spacek as whistleblower Marie Ragghianti, Thompson, who had done a
little community theatre, was auditioned to play himself. The
director liked him so much that he tried (unsuccessfully) to talk
him into taking the part of Gov. Blanton instead!

Anyway, the part in "Marie" led to a part-time acting career,
although I believe Thompson kept his hand in legal work and lobbying
throughout. He's had a lot of movie roles, of course, but his best
TV role was probably as a white supremacist in "Wiseguy." That was
the first I became aware of him as an actor.

When Al Gore became vice president, a caretaker was appointed to the
seat until the next election. Thompson -- who was, recall, a
Washington lobbyist -- defeated his Democratic opponent with folksy
TV commercials in which he appeared in a red pickup truck. (By way
of disclosure, the Democratic opponent, a moderate, comes from my
small town and I dealt with him quite often when he was a
congressman.)

Family tragedy caused Thompson to decide, relatively late in the
game, that he would not run for re-election this year, which caused
a domino effect of changes in Tennessee offices. The DA role
on "Law & Order" seems like it would be relatively light work, and
he should do well in the part.

HAS to be a satire, right? (For those who missed it, Contest Searchlight

Also, the show had the most intrusive product placements I've EVER seen

That would also be a comment on Project Greenlight, since Matt & Ben were

This is good news - I like Thompson as an actor (much better than as a
politician), and I thought Wiest was (surprisingly) horrible as Schiff's
replacement on L&O.

The DA and LT roles on L&O are relatively small - but crucial. I think Steven
Hill was a major factor in establishing the longevity of L&O, and Dann Florek
was great in the begining (I recall the stark contrast to his LA Law
character). Epatha (forgot her last name) has not been too bad, but they
really needed to get a new DA, and Thompson will bring the gruff, no-nonsense
pesona that the role needs.

Hello. I'm glad that you enjoyed the article I submitted for the link-
a-ma-bobber (though, I'm certain that someone would have put it up
there if I hadn't). Anyway, I kinda subscribe to the Calvinist view
of Eisner, that it's futile to talk about a competent ABC since for
that to happen, Eisner would actually have to temper his
micromanaging and third-guessing impulses. But say ABC didn't manage
to sabotage Millionaire and is still riding high on that gravy-train,
and/or incubated good programs during the time -- I'd think there'd
still be a couple of stories about Eisner slowly hurting Disney, with
the standard boilerplate indicating ABC's fortunes have never been
better in this alternate universe. He's made plenty of mistakes in
the theme-park and movie businesses over the years to justify the
roasting.

Anyway, for anyone who wants to continue with the Disneywatching, the
LA Weekly has a piece to follow-up the Slate and LA Times stories on
Eisner -- though it appears to have been written before Eisner bought
$10 Million worth of Disney stock, which I would assume give him more
control of his destiny.

PS, Apologies for not commenting sooner, but in the doldrums of

With all the discussion going on about Beat The Geeks, I decided to
tape a few shows and see what all the fuss was about. I don't know if
it's a coincidence or not but in both shows they erroneously
eliminated a player in the "music, movie or TV show" round (or
whatever it's called.

In one case, the clue was "Yessongs" and the lovely Kristin blurted
out "movie". After asking her if the word "songs" wasn't a big enough
clue, they told her it was "music" and said bye-bye. Well, "Yessongs"
IS a movie. It's a Yes concert movie that played in theatres back in
the mid-70s. It's even listed in the Internet Movie Database.

Today one of the clues was "Heartbreak Hotel" and the contestant
again said "movie". Yeah, it was one of Presley's greatest songs but
it was ALSO the title of a 1988 movie directed by Chris Columbus and
starring Tuesday Weld, Charlie Schlatter and David Keith as Elvis.
And this also caused the player to be eliminated.

I suppose knowing this says something about how geeky *I* am, but
one would think that either the music or movie geek would catch it
and the show would correct their error.

Maybe you should watch the shows again and a little more closely.
The host specifically tells the contestants to answer whether the phrase is
BEST KNOWN for movies music or TV.
Heartbreak Hotel was a song long before a movie.
Yessongs would have never been a movie had it not been an album first.
I hope this clears things up.

Obviously, you would know (grin). And, speaking as an average
viewer, I've always understood that rule as well.

Really, when you think about it, in the age of media synergy the
segment would be pretty meaningless if they didn't have that
disclaimer. Nowadays, almost any really successful project in one
medium has spinoffs in at least one other medium; movies and TV have
soundtrack CDs, CDs have promotional TV specials or videos, TV shows
are turned into movies, movies are turned into TV shows and what
have you.

Of course, there may be a few cases where you could legitimately
argue which is the best-known project. There have been a few
movies, though I'm drawing a blank right now, where the soundtrack
album was a hit even though the movie was a flop. Also, you would
probably get movie buffs who would argue for the movie version of,
say, "The Odd Couple" even though the TV version was seen by
millions more people. But I'm sure the producers just avoid those
instances whenever they think about it.

Agreed. Personally, while I like the show, I do think that "lightning
round" needs to be re-thought a little. There are good arguments either
way for some of the answers used on the show. Of course, the producers are
the final arbiters for any disputes but it does make the contest seem
uneven at times in what is otherwise a decent little show.

Yes, I imagine that they steer away from items that are well known in
more than one category. Half of the things in that round I have no
idea what they are, I am amazed when contestants get them right, and
then even more amazed when the geeks know way more than anyone should
about the said item.

I would hope that they would avoid things like "Man on the Moon" it
was a movie a few years ago, but it was also a very successful R.E.M.
song, or "Ozzy Osbourne" who has been in music forever but also stars

OK, "best known". (And I admit I didn't catch that phrase in the
telecast.)Is "Dock Of The Bay" better known as an Otis Redding song
or a Michael Bolton song? Unfortunately, the "correct" answer could
depend on the age of the person asking the question. And, as someone
pointed out, was the "Odd Couple" a movie or television show?

I'm not claiming that the answers the producers were looking for
weren't the BEST answers but, as I mentioned before, I've seen just
two shows and in both cases these answers resulted in somebody
getting the boot. One would think think that in an elimination round
they would use questions where there was one and only one definitive
answer.

(And "Yessongs" wasn't an album first. They were created
simultaneously, the album being recorded during the same concerts
that were filmed -- although the movie and the album sometimes used
different performances of the same song.)

And now let's all go have pie! 8-)

  You consider Michael Bolton music?

Fact is, this ain't "Jeopardy", gang and the questions don't go through the
umpteen levels of fact checking that they would on that show. Nor should
they but when you use a term like "best known", it's always going to come
down to an opinion on the part of the people writing the questions, who
will also inevitably show their age with the answer they pick as being
"best known". So it's really, best known if you happen to be in the
writer's age group.

It's like the old joke about explaining Paul McCartney and the Beatles to a
kid - In the late 70's the punchline was "he was in a band before Wings?",
in the 80's it was "he was in band?" and now, the answer would be "who is
Paul McCartney?" Again, I think it's a weak point in an otherwise good game.

No, not really. I didn't think Louie was all that great. I'm not too
enthused about Al Borland taking over (will he still be wearing
flannel? Will he be able to fix the board if it breaks?) but it doesn't
keep me awake at night. From what I gather with the show's ratings, we're
only about six weeks away from the Dickie Dawson Desperation Deal before
this incarnation finally sinks.

Funny that I see this right after viewing the pilot to "Boomtown". There's
a scene where a kid nearly gets his head blown off for shoplifting a
Michael Bolton CD. Talk about a senseless death. It's probably the most
network time Bolton has gotten in years.

Yeah. Who'd've thought "umpteen" would be a real word, what with
it being in the dictionary and all?

Actually, I think Neil Simon considers it a play, and a rather good one. Then
again, it's no Lion King.

umpteen, adj., informal

I had been taping Game Show Network's morning "To Tell The Truth"
blocks this week, and Friday's block was somewhat of a novelty --
two episodes from the Bud Collyer version and two episodes from the
Alex Trebek version, all four of which were guest-hosted by producer
Mark Goodson. In Collyer's case, it was because of illness, while
Trebek was called away for the birth of a child.

The funny thing about seeing the two in conjunction was that Goodson
clearly and unmistakably states during the first Trebek episode that
this is his first time to come out from backstage and host the
program. Could he have forgotten about the Collyer incident? Or did
he think it just sounded better to say that he'd never done it
before?

To be perfectly honest, I didn't end up watching most of the
episode, and so it's possible he corrected himself at some point.
But I just thought it was weird.

Well no, he's not the BEST at the job, he is just very likable. He
messes up sometimes, but he is a lot more likable than Richard Karn
or whoever. Tribune just can't have a host who has the tant of
scandle I guess, even though, it hasn't hurt the ratings. Granted the
ratings aren't what they once were, but that is more 9/11 than
anything, before then the ratings were golden.

Huh?

Ratings on game shows has declined across the board since 9/11?

Perhaps you don't mean ratings, but rather ad revenue.

I wonder if Richard Dawson is even functional enough to come back and do the
show anymore? Would he do it even if they asked?

IMDb says he last hosted it 7 years ago. He's now almost 70.

He wouldn't come back again, I guarantee that. He did a few years ago
like you said, he was horrible, he had lost his edge, you could
barely hear what he was saying, he was great in his prime, but I
don't see him ever coming back, he is enjoying his family and his
retirement.

My favorite host of all time is Louie though, he just seems more real
than the ones in the past. Just my humble opinion.

Ask, and you shall receive. :-)

I found this on Google.

Former news anchor Andrea Thompson, 42, hired by Court TV channel

ATLANTA (AP) - Andrea Thompson, the former NYPD Blue actress and CNN
Headline News anchor, has been hired by Court TV. Thompson will host
a three-hour block of programming on Saturday evenings beginning June
8.

The block, in which Thompson will introduce shows and speak during
breaks, will include reruns of NYPD Blue and episodes of Forensic
Files, a series about how police solve crimes.

Thompson, 42, left Atlanta-based CNN in March after less than a year
there. She joined the cable channel in June 2001 after just a year of
experience in the TV news business, working as a correspondent for
KRQE-TV in Albuquerque, N.M.

Nude photos of Thompson appeared on several Internet sites, adding to
criticism that CNN had gone Hollywood at the expense of news
professionalism.

Court TV is owned by Liberty Media and AOL Time Warner, which also
owns CNN.

 The Canadian Press, 2002

I'm a big "Babylon 5" fan, but I have to admit that when I first saw
Andrea Thompson on "NYPD Blue" I didn't recognize her, because she
had changed her appearance so much. It was the voice that finally
made me recognize her.

Would Andrea be any worse than some of the people currently in
Congress? :-)

Erin, delurking just to send this article, and who is glad she's not
the only one who knows Thompson from "Bablyon 5"

Louie's personal problems and the tabloid revelations of such didn't actually
