Studios USA syndicates the series to local stations in addition to it being
run on their Sci-Fi Channel. The schedule used to be the same as what was
running on SFC but an outcry from the broadcasters that they never had new
product to run during broadcast sweeps caused them to change it up a
bit. The show should run through the rest of the season in syndication.

Not quite - they are from the current season. it's kind of like the deal
WGN has to run a lot of the syndicated hours a week after their primary
window. For example, the Mutant X premiere and the premiere of Andromeda
should be running on WGN this weekend (those episodes ran on the regular
stations last weekend).

A new season of Stargate: SG1 for starters. There's still the possibility
of another Babylon 5 spinoff (although it's not looking good, considering
the movie / pilot has been in the can for a while now and it's scheduled
for January). Then there's the second Dune mini-series.

NBC for a while refused to air the Simpsons Butterfingers
commercials. I think they eventually backed off because of its being
obviously counterproductive.

I haven't seen the commercial, but unless Jason Alexander were
explicitly being Bob Patterson in the commercial, it's unlikely to
cause much of a fuss, and given the brouhaha with the Simpsons
commercial, I think that even that fuss might be muted.

Since EchoStar is Dish Network, that means that people who subscribe to

It's not WWOR or any of your locals - that's how the shows are being
made. Buffy, as fed to Canada, has a large Buffy logo in the top 2/3 of
the screen. That's how it looks when it runs in Canada. On UPN, they use
that for UPN promos or for the few UPN stations that have news, a news
teaser. I haven't looked at the Canadian feed for Roswell to see if
they're doing the same thing, but it wouldn't surprise me. I do know that
Enterprise has full screen credits (well, full within the letterbox) when
fed to Canada.

*
*    SYNOPSIS
*    Queer as Folk is about the lives of a group of gay men and women
living in Pittsburgh who, like anyone, are focused on their relationships,
careers, loves and ambitions.  The series is a realistic, funny and
sometimes graphic portrayal of a minority community living in present-day
society.  It's not West Hollywood, it's not the Castro and it's not Chelsea.
It may be a small world - a gay Main Street with a couple of bars, a disco,
a few shops and a diner - but its reverberations are universal.  Queer as
Folk is an unapologetic celebration of life in its varied forms.  And as
always, in the differences we discover the similarities that make us all
human.
*
*    Brian Kinney (Gale Harold), is a sexual animal, always on the prowl
for his next conquest.  Michael Novotny (Hal Sparks) is his best friend.
Justin Taylor (Randy Harrison) is a 17-year-old boy whose life is changed
one night when he experiences sex and what he thinks is love, for the first
time.  Emmett Honeycutt (Peter Paige) is the
*    most flamboyant of his friends and wears it with pride.  Ted Schmidt
(Scott Lowell) is an accountant whose fatal flaw is a lust for 20-somethings
who don't return his interest. Debbie Novotny (Sharon Gless) is Michael's
eccentric mother - vehemently proud of her gay son.  Dr. David Cameron
(Chris Potter) is the dreamboat chiropractor who makes Michael forget about
Brian, for a while.  Lindsay Peterson (Thea Gill), an art teacher and
Melanie Marcus (Michelle Clunie), a lawyer, are a loving lesbian couple who
decide to have a child sired by Brian (whom Melanie despises), not realizing
exactly how complicated and entwined their lives will become.
*
*    Queer As Folk is executive produced by Ron Cowen, Daniel Lipman and
Tony Jonas. Cowen & Lipman developed the series for American television
based on the British series created by Russell T. Davies.  Sheila Hockin
serves as producer.  Davies is a consultant on the SHOWTIME series from Tony
Jonas Productions, Cowlip Productions and Temple Street Productions.
*
*    Showtime Networks Inc. (SNI), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of
Viacom Inc., owns the premium television networks SHOWTIME, THE MOVIE
CHANNEL and FLIX, as well as the multiplex channels SHOWTIME TOO, SHOWTIME
SHOWCASE, SHOWTIME EXTREME, SHOWTIME BEYOND, SHOWTIME NEXT, SHOWTIME WOMEN,
SHOWTIME FAMILYZONE and TMC xtra.  SNI operates and manages the premium
television network SUNDANCE CHANNEL, which is owned by SNI, Robert Redford
and Universal Studios.  SNI markets and distributes sports and entertainment
events for exhibition to subscribers on a pay-per-view basis through SET
(Showtime Event Television) Pay Per View. Additionally, the
advertiser-supported television network SHOWTIME EXTREME is available in
Spain through a joint venture with Media Park and the advertiser-supported

To those who don't know the difference, Nikita worked
for an entirely different organization than the CIA.

All of the new shows -- Alias, Agency, and UC, involve
the CIA.

Remember, the CIA was the organization which for some
reason was unable to uncover the plot to destroy the
WTC and Pentagon on Sept. 11. Nikita worked for a
clandestine group, Section One, which was not under
the aegis of the CIA or any one government.

Alias is not La Femme Nikita.

the other networks they always just referred to it as 'Millionaire' (as

Sorry I wasn't clearer. I was referring to the hamhanded screen
grabbing of NYC's Channel 9. I have no idea what UPN does. Channel 9
has always messed with the end credits of whichever show precedes the
10pm news (so Buffy is exempt). It's possible that they simply blew up
the news promo accidentally so that it filled up more of the screen
and overlapped the credits area down below. No way to know.

One other note from the land of time-shifting. I watched "100 Centre
Street" today, taped Monday night. Cute little story featuring Eli
Wallach as a burlesque veteran accused of whatever larceny it is when
you record a live performance illegally and sell the tape. His alibi
was that he needed the lyrics to "Luck Be a Lady" for his new act, or
something like that. He was so colorful and cuddly that the judge let
him go with a slap on the wrist. I wonder if episode scribe Sidney
Lumet screwed up, or if it was his choice to make the courtroom
population completely oblivious to the fact that if the Wallach
character needed those lyrics, it would have been a damn sight cheaper
to buy a copy of the song's sheet music than to buy a ticket to the
show and smuggle in his recording equipment.

Jim Romanesko's MediaNews had a letter from someone arguing why he
didn't feel sorry for Limbaugh. I'm not saying I agree with it, but
it's an interesting point:

http://www.poynter.org/medianews/letters.htm
From CHARLES PIERCE: I do seem to recall that, a few years back on
his micro-rated television show, Mr. Limbaugh once made sport of the
height of Robert Reich, then a member of the Clinton cabinet. He
mentioned Mr. Reich's name, and then he showed the top of someone's
head, to the hilarious enjoyment of the several people he'd dragooned
into the studio. Of course, Mr. Reich's height is the result of an
unfortunate childhood medical condition. Now, though, all the D.C.
Cool Kids feel really bad about poor Rush without remembering the
classic formulation once taught to me by an old tabloid editor back
when I worked on an old tabloid: "Son, you know what you get when a
jerk dies? A dead jerk." (I did clean things up a bit). Would I wish
this upon Rush? No. Can I summon up an ounce of sympathy? Well, ditto.

On a related note... if you feel like believing Matt Drudge -- this
seems like one of his more credible stories -- Limbaugh's doctors
think they will be able to save some of his hearing. He sez they'll
have a press conference Thursday morning:

CBS launches a new show called "Survivor" (8 PM). I've seen no publicity about this, but from what I've heard it involves a group of strangers learning to live together in an exotic locale trying to win a large amount of money.

The WB launches a primetime version of the syndicated dating game "Elimidate" called "Elimidate Deluxe" (8 PM). The difference? Not only is the network version a full hour, it also is topped with lettuce, mayonnaise and a tomato.

One of the guys (or maybe the gal) asks "When Sting retires, will he change his name to Stung?" on tonight's "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" (8 PM) on ABC.

Ross is the father on NBC's "Friends" (8 PM). Who didn't see that coming 7 years back? Zzzzzzzzz. Wake me when it's your last episode.

The History Channel's "History Undercover" explores the common links among "Three Air Crashes" all of which took off from JFK Airport. (Click).

Amy Sedaris may or may not have been David Spade's stalker on NBC's otherwise lame "Just Shoot Me" (9:30).

Millionaire exec producer Michael Davies has been hired to add some reality to A&E. The result is "Ultimate Reality" (10 PM), sorta like Fear Factor, except the participants actually volunteer to do the stupid stunts -- not unlike "Name your Adventure" hosted by Mario Lopez at one time on the NBC Saturday teen lineup.

Louie: "Name a bad plot for a TV drama after September 11."
	Contestant 1: "Anthrax?"
Louie: "SHOW ME... ANTHRAX!... It's number 2, one answer can beat it"
	Contestant 2: "Osama bin Laden?"
Louie: "SHOW ME... OSAMA! ... okay, it's number 1"
Unless someone smart pulls this one, CBS' "The Agency" (10 PM) airs an anthrax episode tonight. Either they'll run out of episodes in good taste to air, or it will be canceled.

Who wants us dead and why? And which of them is harboring Carmen SanDiego? "Peter Jennings Reporting: Minefield -- The United States and the Muslim World (10 PM) checks off the countries of the Islamic world in a naughty and nice list.

Louis Armstrong, Marvin Gaye, Sly & The Family Stone, Run-D.M.C. and Michael Jackson are among those profiled on VH1's "Say It Loud!" (10 PM). George Clinton and T-Boz explain how fashion and pop culture have been changed by black musicians. Not that either of these two have ever worn anything I'd even consider.

Dave (11:35ish) has Bruce Willis who actually appears to be making decent movies well, except for "The Kid" and "Breakfast Of Champions"). Jay (same time) has Britney Spears because we all wonder what she thinks about Osama bin Laden. ("He's icky.")

All I know is that the Anthrax episode was fed to Canada last night, so
it's a pretty good bet we'll be getting it here. As to whether or not it's
in good taste, that's a personal decision but what are they supposed to do
episodes about? The secret plot initiated by T.H.R.U.S.H. and
S.P.E.C.T.R.E. to dominate the world?

Wow, where *are* the Men From U.N.C.L.E. when you need them?

I guess not everyone can be like Comedy Central and develop
innovatively CHEAP programming, such as "Insomniac", which is just
Dave Attell and a single handheld camera. Or "Let's Bowl" which is
basically just two guys (one doing a cheap Paul Lynde imitation) at a
bowling alley. Or do the networks feel it's beneath them?

We have 70 channels and yet nobody watches TV on Saturdays? Cable is
more expensive than ever but nobody can afford to put anything on it?
Sponsors have more brands than ever but can't afford to advertise
them? Ads cost far more to produce than the shows being sponsored?
Entire football stadiums are being built on TV revenue, but MNF
ratings are way down? Sometimes it feels like the whole system is
falling like a house of cards.

Well, I couldn't quite figure out why NBC followed ABC into the Saturday
movie game (except for the obvious, viewing levels in key demos on Saturday
nights is low.)

This means that in a lot of markets there are simultaneous movies on ABC,
NBC, WB and UPN affiliates (which don't have network programming on
Saturdays.) Way to counter-program!

As far as ABC turning it local -- that's actually not a bad idea. Affiliates
could get into the sports game, with local pickups of regional teams, run
their own movies have all the inventory in them, and/or --gasp -- do local
original programming.

I am so ancient that I can recall when Saturdays were THE night for TV --
Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, The Jeffersons, Carol Burnett, Love Boat,
Fantasy Island...(OK, the latter two were perhaps not quite up to the
quality standards of the first four, but they were favorites of the
younger me). I've heard a theory that Sat. night ratings began to decline
after the advent of home video -- people preferred to rent movies instead
of watching network fare. Also, note that HBO's big "premiere night" for
its own films and the most successful Hollywood fare is Saturdays, and I
believe it does quite well in the ratings on that day.

BBC AMERICA PREMIERES
FACING TERROR: UNDERSTANDING THE NEW WORLD
ORDER
James Rubin hosts a three-hour special exploring what
happens next

As the U.S. goes to war, BBC AMERICA presents a special night
of programs tackling the question of what happens next. Hosted
by former Assistant Secretary of State, James Rubin, the
three-hour event turns the spotlight on how the war will play out,
the changing face of warfare, the emerging new world order and
the history behind the unfolding conflict.

ìClearly our world has changed this past month. Our sense of
security has been shaken, but working together Britain and
America have defeated communism, we have defeated fascism
and in the years ahead, we can surely defeat terrorism,î Rubin
says.

Facing Terror: Understanding The New World Order premieres
on Friday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m. ET, 5:00 p.m. PT and 9:00
p.m. PT. It re-airs Sunday, October 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET and 9:00
p.m. PT and Tuesday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. ET and 8:00 p.m.
PT.

FutureWar
The basic job of ordinary soldiers - to defend and attack ñ hasnít
changed since the worldís first armies were formed. But as
America goes to war on terrorism, tools, tactics and technology
deployed by combatants in a new century are shaping an
altogether different face to armed conflict.

FutureWar hears from major figures in the U.S. military, whose
comments have proved chillingly prescient in light of terrorist
atrocities in the United States. The likes of General Charles
Krulak, commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps from 1995-99,
and General Paul Van Riper also of the U.S. Marine Corps,
predict wars waged in cities, anonymous foes and unorthodox
means of attack.

Krulak also talks candidly of the need for flexibility and speed of
thought among his men; deploying methods that included
marines taking to the trading floors of Wall Street, and the use of
war laboratories.

Despite latest hi-tech weaponry, the program questions whether
America will be tough enough on the ground and willing to
accept casualties to win the first war of the 21st Century.

HARDtalk Special: New World Order (U.S. Premiere)
As the world waits to see how the war on terrorism develops,
HARDtalkís award-winning host Tim Sebastian talks to key
decision makers and opinion formers about the ënew world
order.í Guests including Ambassador Dennis Ross, former U.S.
Envoy to the Middle East, and Mary Robinson, United Nations
High Commissioner for Human Rights, come under tough
questioning.

In a world of shifting alliances, how will we ever solve the global
problems of war, poverty and climate change? Will human rights
abuses be overlooked as world leaders hasten to form an
international coalition against terrorism?

Afghanistan: The Dark Ages
As U.S. and allied forces begin to strike back, BBC AMERICA
airs an encore presentation of Afghanistan: The Dark Ages, a
revealing, all-new documentary analyzing the history of the
Taliban regime and the context behind the unfolding conflict. It is
presented from the unique viewpoint of the BBC's veteran war
correspondent John Simpson, who reports directly from the
troubled country he has been covering for more than 10 years.

The program takes an in-depth look at what has happened since
the Russian withdrawal in 1989 and how the country descended
into civil war. Simpson, who along with the production team
crossed the Afghan border in disguise, explains how the Taliban
came to power and its links with Osama Bin Laden. The
documentary also examines the impact of years of heavy fighting
on the population, cataloguing the extreme punishments carried
out by rulers on those who break strict Islamic code.

BBC AMERICA dares to be different. It brings U.S. audiences the
very best of British television from one of the world's leading
broadcasters. Viewers can enjoy a vibrant new generation of
British programs - delivered on a single channel that is bold,
engaging and often wickedly entertaining. In a schedule packed
with U.S. premieres, BBC AMERICA presents a fresh, rich and
diverse mix of provocative dramas and seriously weird
comedies, plus live news from around the globe.

BBC America has seen it fit to rerack *Afghanistan: The Dark
Ages* tonight at 10:00p ET. This is according to my TV Guide
onscreen program listing through AT & T Broadband.

I'm not one to make blatant plugs. However, this program, part
of the BBC *Panorama* series, forces me to make one. It is
easily the best broadcast journalism on the air this year.

The correspondent who put this documentary together, John
Simpson, first visited Afghanistan in 1989, and has made a
number of return trips. In this program, he provides a
perspective sorely lacking on American television. He's put
together a program the way CBS News used to in its heyday, for
those of us old enough to remember.

10/11/2001 - Updated 01:43 PM ET
NBC buys Telemundo for $2B

NEW YORK (AP) - NBC announced Thursday that it is buying Telemundo
Communications Group, the No. 2 Spanish-language broadcaster in the United
States, for about $2 billion in cash and stock.

The deal would give NBC a strong foothold in the burgeoning arena of
Hispanic media, which have attracted the attention of major media
conglomerates because of the rapidly growing Hispanic population.

Hispanic media have been expanding even as other media businesses have
slumped because of the poor advertising climate, which was worsened by the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

NBC Chairman Bob Wright said the Hispanic market "accounts for a
significant and growing share of the nation's economy and we are eager to
draw on Telemundo's expertise to better serve this important audience."

NBC is paying $1.98 billion for Telemundo in a mix of half cash and half
stock in NBC's corporate parent, General Electric. NBC would also assume
about $700 million in debt.

Sony currently owns about 40% of the closely held Telemundo, while Liberty
Media, a company controlled by cable pioneer John Malone, has a 35% stake.
The rest is held by other investors.

In an interview with CNBC, the business news channel owned by NBC, Wright
acknowledged that before accounting for cost savings, the terms of deal
would be "very expensive."

But he added that the companies expected numerous benefits as they combined
ad sales teams, swapped programs from NBC to use on Telemundo, and made
other cost savings. He said he expected Telemundo to contribute up to $600
million in revenues to NBC within two years.

Telemundo's reach is behind that of leading Hispanic broadcaster Univision
Communications. But Univision has been responding to the competitive threat
from Telemundo and other rivals with plans to launch a second
Spanish-language network, Telefutura, next year.

NBC is believed to have bested a rival bid for Telemundo from Viacom, which
in addition to CBS owns MTV, the Paramount studio, Blockbuster and numerous
radio stations. Viacom had already expanded into niche broadcasting with
the purchase of BET, a cable network aimed at black viewers.

The deal is not expected to face major regulatory hurdles.

In addition to the NBC broadcast network, NBC owns CNBC, a half-interest in
news channel MSNBC along with Microsoft, as well as a minority stake in
Paxson Communications, owner of the family-friendly PAX broadcast network.

NBC plans to keep the current management of Telemundo in place, including
CEO Jim McNamara, who will report to NBC President Andrew Lack, as well as
Telemundo's chief operating officer Alan Sokol.

to any young athlete hoping to get an edge on the competition.
REAL SPORTS examines the case of Shane Garrett, a
22-year-old former body builder from Kansas who suffered a
heart attack while using a product containing Ephedrine and is
now permanently disabled.

Plus Bernard Goldberg travels to Northern Ireland and visits a

I love it, but when you think about it, they've almost already done
that with news "magazine" shows. It's just that instead of being at
10 PM (EST or whatever), they're scattered.

And what critics would call for would be a nightly prime time news hour at
10 p.m. ET (of course, more like "Nightline" than the nightly news shows or
the magazine shows). The idea of local news being given a whole hour scares
them (although I assume the idea stated above would be to have Dave, Jay and
"Nightline" starting at 10:35 p.m. ET instead of, say, 11 p.m. ET, like all
of Fox's attempts at late-night (including "MAD TV").

With at least four time-zones to program for, wouldn't that be pretty tough?

Incidentally, I read a proposal online to reduce the number of time-zones
across the continental U.S. to two -- combining Eastern and Central, and
combining Mountain and Pacific, so that the largest timezone difference would
be two hours. Essentially one half of the country would be on permanent
standard time and one on permanent daylight time.
http://www.standardtime.com/ I am not advocating it, but it would be
interesting, in terms of TV programming for one thing.

Peace,

Ann

Not that much, considering that the nightly news shows, the morning shows
and "Nightline" air on delay in the Mountain and Pacific time zones,
anyway--and except for West Coast sports, there's usually nothing happening
between a 10 p.m. ET telecast and a 1 a.m. telecast for the West Coast.

I suppose then you're right -- a "Nightline" type format would work better
than a "nightly news" format which can get pretty free-wheeling from the desk
if news is breaking.

On one of the pages of "Panorama" is this credo for the series, which has
been on the air for over 50 years:

Panorama's job is to investigate and uncover stories about Britain and the
world. The range of stories that the programme covers is wide but the
guiding principles for Panorama are always the same:

To make programmes with authority which make waves and withstand scrutiny.
To report the world we live in with a depth of understanding often missing
in many other programmes.
To scrutinise the use and abuse of power, both public and private.
To get to stories first.
To make the stories we tell relevant, accessible and engaging for the
audience.
To treat fairly the people with whom we deal.

---------------

Something which every news organization should have as their credo.

"The Golden Girls" was the last series worth watching on Saturday nights --
so Saturdays have indeed been a network wasteland for nearly a decade. As
Sue said, what a contrast with the golden years of the 1970s (which in
addition to MTM and Newhart, also had All in the Family).

For me, if the tube's on on Saturday in my place, it's on an admitted guilty
"pleasure" -- Cops and America's Most Wanted!

Personally, I don't know why the networks feel the need to take someone
like, oh, Emeril - and make him do a sit com. Why not do a prime time

So much for the "Blue/L&O" war. Who's going in that slot--"Downtown" or
"Millionaire?"

And will Reed Irvine and Donald Wildmon make a big stink about "Blue" being
on at 9 p.m.?

While it was smart to move NYPD Blue out of the path of Law and Order, I
wonder if the 9 p.m. slot will mean the show will have to be toned down.

Already, Dick Wolf has complained that L&O: Criminal Intent is not a 9 p.m.

And speaking of cooking shows... Not only did NBC announce it is developing a

Actually, I'll bet Jamie "The Naked Chef" Oliver would make a better
subject for a sitcom than Emeril. He's younger, cuter, hipper -- he is
even the drummer for a pop band (Scarlet Division). Lots of potential for
wacky fun!

Survivor The Next Generation
by Thomas Allen Heald

CBS will have sent "The Agency" to my door by the time you read this, so I'd
better write fast and head for somewhere safe where no one will look for me,
like "Wolf Lake."

Like the previous runs, security is tight when it comes to anything involving
"Survivor III" So tight that the "informative" preview show last Thursday was
neither informative nor that much of a preview.

But while snoop sites can look for white puffs of smoke, torch placement, and
other red herrings for clues about who's voted off next, the real code has
been cracked and we can now reveal not only who the winner of Survivor III
is, but the victors of the as-yet-uncast fourth and fifth series as well.

The winner of "Survivor (III): Africa" is 24-year-old African-American
Detroit basketball coach Clarence Black.

Why? Survivor's universe is like the Star Trek series ... only backward.

*

"Enterprise" has Quantum-Leaping Captain Archer, an attractive soulless
Vulcan assistant, forced alliances, the warlike Klingons, an unsure ship, and
a cameo from James Cromwell.

"Survivor (I): Borneo" had corporate-training Captain Richard Hatch, Kelly
Wiggleworth, forced alliances, the warlike Tagi tribe, an unsure concept, and
a cameo from Sonja Christopher.

*

"Star Trek: Voyager": relatively bland Kate Mulgrew, crew trying desperately
trying to get home, impossibly tall hologram doctor, cheesy looking ship, and
a lot of vomiting from the audience until sexy Jeri Ryan appears.

"Survivor Australia": bored housewife Tina Wesson, crew trying desperately
trying not to get sent home, impossibly tall singer songwriter Mitchell
Olsen, Pontiac Aztec, and a lot of vomiting from the audience anytime sexy
Jeri Mathney appears.

*

"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine": shape-shifting security officer, darker more
evil show ends up being kinda pointless, and overshadowed by previous series,
Trek's first black captain Avery Brooks.

"Survivor Africa": motive-shifting insecure alliances, dryer, more humid,
more evil challenges, Survivor's first black winner the aptly named Clarence
Black.

*

Thus Survivor 4: Tahiti will reinvigorate the franchise, the winner will be
an older bald British guy, and every challenge will be won by a whiny little
teenager. It will also be the first time androids are allowed to audition.

And in "Survivor 5: Wherever" the winner will have a toupee, speak haltingly,
try and have sex with all the female castaways, and all of them will be flown
to the location courtesy of Priceline.com.

But I fear I've said too much already. And they're already trying to knock
down my door. Tell ... Sue ... Hawk ... I'm ... sorry.... GSPPxht...

Broadcasting and Cable seems to agree with you. They had a little article
about how hard it was for CBS. Hey! Try being a FOX affiliate, with a delayed
game start...that means an even later end time than last night, and a local
news team hanging out all night to do their bit. Yikes!

Ok so maybe I'm digging here, but as I watch the Minefield special I'm
reminded of the recent flap up against Peter Jennings.

If you remember, back about a month ago, Peter Jennings came under
attack ( http://www.snopes2.com/rumors/jennings.htm ) from the
listeners of Rush Limbaugh's show for appearing to be anti-american,
pro-arab and generally a nasty person. Rush's audience inundated
Jennings with crass letters and voicemails, thanks in part to the
broadcast of Jennings' contact information.

Well, this week, as everyone is commenting on the irony of Limbaugh
losing his hearing, I can't seem to remember seeing anything about it
on world news tonight. Am I wrong? Did ABC news kill ths story in
retaliation?

I ask not because I care a whit about Limbaugh, so don't go all
ditto-head on me. I'm just curious if a little game in being played.

Hey folks,

I'm afraid we need more than a post on TVBarn2 to
confirm the cancelation of "The Invisible Man."
Verification from The Sci-Fi Channel would be helpful.
In the meantime, news of this so-called cancelation
has not been reported by any credible TV news site.

I can understand why the show would be canceled. It
hasn't been very good lately. But we need facts, not

Everyone,

I wanted to let you know that, contrary to what you may have heard, no
official decision has yet been made regarding The Invisible Man's returning
for another season. When we have more information, we will pass it along to
you.

If you would like to make your voice heard on this issue, I invite you to
join in an online chat tonight with Thomas Vitale, who is SCI FI's Senior
Vice President of Acquisitions, Scheduling, and Program Planning. The chat
is tonight (Thursday, Oct. 11) at 8 p.m. ET.

You can find out more information on our chat page at:
http://www.scifi.com/chat

Thank you,
Karl
Community Producer
SCIFI.COM

 From the chat:

<Moderator> <InvisibleStarvedChocobo> Mr. Vitale, many people here have
Invisible in front of their names, as you've undoubtedly noticed. This is in
response to disturbing news about The Invisible Man, mainly that the future
of the show is in serious jeopardy, and was actually cancelled briefly. We
are all wondering, will I-Man be renewed for a third season?

<Thomas-Vitale> Ahhh... I knew that would be the first question of the
evening...

<Thomas-Vitale> I'm an Invisible Man fan myself, and I think the show gets
stronger with every episode.

<Thomas-Vitale> We are in the process of figuring out next year's full
schedule and IMan is on the list of strong contenders.

<Thomas-Vitale> Unfortunately, I don't have a firm answer today, but we are
hopeful that it will be back.

<Thomas-Vitale> The issue is for Sci Fi and for syndication too, where the
show is also seen (on local stations), so the decision is not entirely in
Sci Fi's hands on this one...

<Thomas-Vitale> As soon as we know what the resolution will be and the
timing, we'll let you know through the site.

I forget if I saw a story on it on the local news or one of the national
newscasts. But if ABC didn't run a story on it, I doubt it would be because
of anything personal between Jennings and Rush.

As Tom pointed out, there is more important news they have to stuff into a
half hour (or an hour in the case of NBC recently).

Last Friday, I didn't see any mention of that it was a year after
Milosevic was ousted in Yugoslavia. You would think that was a bit more
important than a talk show host's hearing problems (particularly since it
was related to the last war - how quickly things are forgotten).

VH1's 5-hour miniseries "Say it Loud: A Celebration of Black Music in America" airs in its entirety starting at 6 PM.

MTV's "Anatomy of A Crime" a dramatization of the events leading up to and the beating death of Matthew Shepard, seems to air on an almost weekly basis in the overnight hours on weekends. On this, the three year anniversary of Shepard's death, the TV-movie airs tonight at 7 PM (somewhat prime time for MTV).

On "Mole II: The Next Betrayal" (8 PM) Anderson cooper makes his charges trade their journals. They push him into a lake. This just don't happen on Survivor, friends.

CBS' "Ellen" (8 PM) get a haircut. If not watched tonight, Ellen likely gets a pink-slip.

The WB's "Maybe It's Me" (8:30) rips off an idea that wasn't that new or funny when "Head of the Class" did it -- a performance of "Hair," with alleged giggles about the idea of Fred Willard and Julia Sweeney nude.

ABC's "Thieves" (9 PM) find a liver, but no onions.

The History Channel's "What Happened After ...?" (9 PM) takes a long strange trip touching on the murder of San Francisco city council member Harvey Milk, the events of Woodstock, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence

PBS' Life 360 (10 PM) presents "A Place In Time" and the role of fate, with a story of a raped 14-year-old and a performance from my Jewish boss: Mary Chapin Carpenter.

If the story of "Mt. Rushmore" (8 PM) interests you, watch the History Channel tonight. It's less boring than actually coming here to see it here in the Black Hills. They recently made "improvements" to the entryway which have resulted in making it uglier, and added parking fees unless you mind walking a ways.

Ripped from the headlines tonight on NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit " (10 PM) : "My baby, my baby, someone's stole my baby." Makes you wish they still did a Monday night (Tori Spelling) women-in-jeopardy movie doesn't it?

On the Disney Channel, Debbie Reynolds is a lovable old witch (no, it's not interviews with her casino employees). "Halloweentown 2: Kalabar's Revenge" (8 PM) has her trying to prevent a young spellcaster from turning kids into what their costumes suggest forever.

BBC America's "So Graham Norton" (11 PM) repeats a grand chat with Honor Blackman and magician David Blaine.

Dave (11:35ish) has Rose McGowan, (book night with) This American Life's "Sarah Vowell, and Jim Gaffigan begging desperately for people to watch "Ellen," so he doesn't have to join "Yes, Dear."

"Tenacious D" land visit Conan (12:35ish).

One of either *NSync or the Backstreet Boys visits Craig (11:35).

Actually, that post came by way of the show's producer so I'd say it was a
little more than just "rumor". There has been something of a reprieve,
though. A later posting by the same producer stated that Sci-Fi was
re-thinking the decision so, to paraphrase the Pythons, "it's not dead
yet". But it's having a hard time breathing.

Was the email from a gloating PR person from The WB? Or an "I-told-you-so"
type from one of the other networks.

No. It's from the UPN Newsletter, the folks who picked up Roswell from The WB.

Now I'm not suggesting they should lie about the ratings for the premiere
of Roswell at its new home, but doesn't it seem odd to be so publicly
pessimistic about a show running on your own network?

'Roswell' in serious trouble
While the resurrection for Sarah Michelle Gellar's main character in "Buffy
the Vampire Slayer" is near permanent, the same might not be true for its
partner show as "Roswell" pulled in lower than expected ratings in the
Nielsen's overnight metered market ratings Tuesday night that forced UPN
into last place behind The WB...

I'm sure many of you caught the special pre-season WEST WING episode, which
began with Martin Sheen and co. saying that the proceeds of the episode would
be donated to relief efforts...

Well, as the new EW points out that there aren't really any proceeds from a
regular TV show... GE already donated $10 million to efforts and said they
weren't donating any advertising dollars from the episode... Aaron Sorkin
didn't comment for the bit, but a source at Warner Bros. told EW that the
money will come from a yet-to-be-calculated share of cable residuals,
international sales, and broadcast syndication fees of the episode. Which
basically means the charities won't see any money from the episode until at
least 2004...

Now to see if THIRD WATCH tries the same gimmick this Monday... ;)

Am I mis-remembering, or were the future profits pledged to the association
for widows and orphans of firefighters?

If so, Sean, I don't see an inherent problem in this. In fact, I'm sure that
funds distributed in 2004 will have their own meeting, when perhaps the
families of firefighters will be less in-the-spotlight than now, and needs
will still arise.

I don't think myself a WW loyalist, so I hope my opinion isn't colored too
much by the emotion of the times. I took the gesture not to be saying, "look
how much money we're pitching in," but rather, "we feel it would be wrong to
directly profit from this episode." That said, I'm sure Sheen, Lowe and
company got paid as usual, didn't they?

Peace,

Ann

Both...
According to the article, "John Spencer stated that profits from the show
would be donated to the New York Firefighters 9-11 Disaster Relief Fund and
the New York Police & Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund...

If it was the latter as you mentioned then I could see that being totally
understandable, though it just seems silly saying they'll give an unspecified
ammount a few years down the road. Would've been nice if the actors wrote
over their checks but I imagine we're past that point...

This was our prediction around the station before the season began--"The
Ellen Show" will be this year's "Bette", a show that CBS will not give up
on, no matter how terrible it is. Halfway through the season, they may
replace some of the actors, or just dump some characters and add some new
ones, but there wasn't a chance in hell "Ellen" would be gone before May...

Generally I think the best response to a feeling of anxiety or
uncertainty over the very real threat of homeland terrorism to to
stay alert AND take action when noticing any suspicious activity.
Allowing ourselves to be paralyzed by fear, aside from just being
unAmerican, will ultimately not get the job done. I'm writing, of
course, from personal experience:
Yesterday afternoon I spotted a Middle Eastern looking gentleman in
his late 30's, perhaps early 40's, at a local Staples store (aisle
11) attempting to place a box of 500 white wove security envelopes in
his shopping basket. I immediately notified the store manager of this
his activity, who in turn contacted local authorities. The potential
terrorist was eventually taken away for questioning--and due directly
to my vigilance I believe up to 500 future case of anthrax infections
was averted. As an added bonus, I was able to purchase the very box
left behind by this terrorist, which just happened to be the last one
in stock. Then on Friday, just after noon, I noticed what appeared to
be a Saudi national with an expired student visa, early to mid 20's,
lingering a bit too long at our Sizzler's salad bar. He was obviously
preparing to contaminate the bar. I was seated with my wife at a
table approx. 10ft. away at the time, vigorously discussing the bleak
prospects of the Northern Alliance assuming and maintaining sole
political power in Afghanistan upon the inevitable outster of the
Taliban. Instead of driving home yet another cogent point, I suddenly
leapt out of my chair, sprinted toward the foreigner, and tackled him
without mercy. I kept him pinned to the floor (next to a spilled
cucumber bowl) for a good 10 minutes, until authorities arrived and
whisked the foreigner away for questioning. Sometime later the store
manager personally thanked me, and informed me--among other things--
that the foreigner had already consumed three helpings of
salad/soup/muffins before attempting to launch his sinister deed.

Tom Arnold, Carrot Top, Beth Littleford, Harlen Williams, George Wallace, Robert Wuhl, Mo'nique, and Lisa Ann Walter are all NBC's "Weakest Links" (8 PM) tonight, as host Anne Robinson blusters at a group of comedians just as funny as she is.

Speaking of weak, here's everything you need to know about CBS' "Surviving Gilligan's Island: The Incredibly True Story of the Longest Three-Hour Tour in History" (8 PM): Tina Louise isn't involved; Most of the juicy details have already been told on either an "The E! True Hollywood Story" or "TV Guide Behind the Sitcom Scandals"; they couldn't use any clips from the show and therefore have to reenact clips like on "America's Most Wanted" or "Hard Copy"; and half the cast is dead. But other than that...

"The Doorbell Rang" for A&E's "Nero Wolfe" (8 PM) with the Stout detective taking on the possibly murderous FBI.

The Discovery Channel looks at the "Deadliest Job in the World," (8 PM) which is either the censor forced to watch Inside Schwartz" each week or a Bering Sea crab fishermen.

Both "The E! True Hollywood Story" (8 PM) and VH1's "Behind the Music" (9 PM) sink their claws into the subject of the late Aaliyah.

Showtime examines Elizabeth Perkins' breasts, and finds cancer in "What Girls Learn" (8 PM) costarring Scott Bakula.

Presenting a classy sitcom with the star of "Booty Call" ... the WB's "Men, Women & Dogs" (8:30 PM). A realistic sitcom in which all the women are too uppity and all that to fall for the wooing attempts of a quartet of dawgs with dogs.

If you only watch one episode of a Law and order series about a pregnant junkie and a possible incestuous wealthy mother this year ... make it this one. "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." (9 PM)

You'd think the E! Channel would have come up with a better name for their "Top ___ sexiest ____ of the week" show than the probably fitting "Rank" (9 PM). This week, who's the hunkiest man in showbiz (that you have no chance of getting)?

Is the WB's "Nikki" (9 PM) pregnant? What, and lose ratings points for every pound gained?

The Discovery Channel looks at the sultry curves of a tempting mistress who men will be more than willing to leave their wives for on "Harley-Davidson: Birth of the V-Rod." (9 PM).

This week on PBS' "American Masters" (9 PM) "F. Scott Fitzgerald: Winter Dreams." Y ou'll find a review on the main TV Barn site.

A gun to her head and a hand full of plutonium, just another day for Syd on "Alias" (9 PM).

Presenting a classy sitcom from the creators and one of the costars from the American Pie flicks ... the WB's "Off Centre" (9:30). A "flawed" couple of Oxford mates try and woo dates in NYC. One's a Brit, the other's a twit. Fancy a shag on our hardwood floor?

The Disney Channel has their "Movie Surfers" (9:30) "reviewers" take a look at "Monsters Inc.," the next movie from Disney-Pixar. I wonder if they'll like it?

Jimmy would quit gambling, but he may get killed by his bookie if he can't pay his debt on ABC's "The Practice" (10 PM).

Just got finished skimming through Friday's "Entertainment [sic]
Tonight." They did a story on how Hollywood continues to portray
overweight people badly. One element of the story was an episode of
"My Wife and Kids," the idea for which came (somehow) from the weight
gained by Tisha Campbell during her recent pregnancy. In the fantasy
sequence, all of the family members are enormously overweight. Also
shown were "positive images" from "The Practice" and "Gilmore Girls,"
and comments from the chair of the SAG Plus-Size Task Force (no, I'm
not making this up, and by the way, the on-screen graphic said
Pus-Size, but I digress) about body image and the message Hollywood
sends and eight-year-olds shouldn't be dieting and so on.

And when it was over, cut to Mary Hart for her wrap-up. I'm
paraphrasing: Since having her baby, Tisha Campbell has lost all of
the weight she gained during the pregnancy.

Well, Mary, I guess we know where you stand. That would be just to the

Were that the case, then responding to it was absolutely the wrong thing to
do. And last I checked, we still do have that whole evil Bill of Rights,
though those First and Fourth Amendments may be taken out any day now if
terrorists from within have their way.

The pointed and snide comment was that what Dateline NBC thrived on before
and to some extent afterwards is the exploitation of human misery and
sensationalism in the same manner that 10-15 years ago years ago was
considered the shocking sleaze of A Current Affair, The Enquirer, or say The
New York "Headless Body Found in Topless Bar" Post.

In the OJ and Lewinsky era, the Enquirer now follows politics as much as
Hollywood. And now both the paper tabloids and TV newsmagazines ARE both
cashing in on the WTC and Pentagon tragedies. It's their stock in trade. They
can't NOT have a tale of survivors, NYC firemen or bin Laden on every single
show.

Despite pleas to "return to normal," the Datelines, 20/20, 60 minutes, 48
Hours, etc., can't return to normal, because either what was normal before,
now seems infinitely less important, or they can't think of anything truly
important to explore.

But yeah, Dateline copying the tabloids having Anthrax is an absurdist
thought, because it's an expression of how sad things are.

Your turn.

If you read the original post from the Producer of the show (there seems to
be a misconception that this is somehow unsubstantiated rumor when it came
directly from the producers themselves), he states that they will be
running out their new episodes in January, the usual time for new episodes

The boy, who is the son of a freelance news producer, developed a rash, and

We learned this evening that the child, in preliminary tests, through blood

It is possible that the child got infected elsewhere, but officials were
being cautions because of other cases in New York and around the country.
Westin said there was no evidence of anyone else at ABC contracting
anthrax."We don't know for sure that that was contracted through an exposure

Maher's done most of the few game shows nowadays that do celeb shows--most
famously in 1997, when Erik Estrada accidentally smacked him in the face
during a taping of "Pictionary." It's not that surprising--also, the shows
were taped before Sept. 11. I remember Denis Leary mentioning doing
"Millionaire" before Sept. 11 and the first show in this group was to air on
Mon. Sept. 17 (this show tonight would've aired originally on Sept. 24).

Geez, how could I have forgotten about THAT story?

Oh. That explains it. Thanks. I thought the Millionaires were fresher than
that.

KRON in San Francisco broke in during the middle of Nightly News to show
MSNBC's live coverage of the press conference with David Westin and Rudy.

I'm sure Nightline will have more coverage tonight as will World News Now.

 The NYT has a story

Hi all -

A couple of references in tonight's Late Show to someone supposed to
appear who apparently bailed - in particular something about working
with a monkey.

Any idea who it was?

Best,
