And let it be said that it was the NAB that pushed for the reinstatement of
the Syndication Exclusivity Act to punish the superstation then known as WOR
in New York for buying the rerun package of "The Cosby Show" and Viacom for
selling it to them. What became WWOR and WGN had huge patches of their
programming replaced with infomercials and hoary reruns (which, admittedly,
some classic TV fans preferred) thanks to the return of Syndex--and people
in Chicago lost the choice of being able to watch "Arsenio" on WWOR at 10:30
p.m. CT instead of the 11:30 p.m. time it aired on WBBM (since the CBS-owned
station had to run Pat Sajak at 10:30), among other examples. When the Met
games moved off of WWOR, WWOR dropped off national cable. Since WGN took WB
programming off the national feed, that station's only real attraction now
is the Cubs and White Sox games (and there are less of those, thanks to the
Cubs signing a cable contract with Fox Sports Net Chicago). But of course,
that it makes the cable-only WB channels in smaller cities co-owned by the
cable systems and local broadcasters (probably NAB members) more attractive.
And in smaller markets where local stations pre-empt or delay more
frequently, cable companies used to be able to bring in network stations
from larger markets and offer shows at other times, particularly in the
Mountain time zone. Syndex ended a lot of that--thanks to the NAB.

Did anyone catch on Monday's Letterman when Dave introdcued U2? When
they came back from the break he and the audience seemed to be
laughing and he said something along the lines of "Here, once again,
is U2," when it was their first segment. It gave off the impression
that either Dave messed up an intro originally or made there was a
problem with U2's sound. Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks

Ha, this is great, Keith!! However, you can add Kevin Spacey to your
Biggest Shills list, since he's been booked on The Daily Show for this
Thursday. (Chris Matthews appears to have been bumped.)

DL is now scheduled to be a guest on today's Rosie, so I guess he is a
three-timer as well. Keep up with the latest comings & goings at

Rob Morrow is another just-announced booking, for tonight's Daily
Show. Does anyone know what he's plugging? As an old Northern Exposure
fan, I have a soft spot for Rob, but he doesn't seem to have done anything
noteworthy in YEARS. A look at his entry in the IMDB

shows six movies in the last two years, NONE of which I've heard of (which
smells like straight-to-video to me...).

Playing for charity will be Kim Alexis, Carol Alt, Bridget Hall, Eva

Thoughts...
1) WWTBAM goes into direct combat with Friends and Survivor:Africa

2) Like Link this will mean five straight celebrity editions (unless
the 26th is couples, etc, and 7 out of 9 straight w/ celebs.

3) Due to witty banter, clips and assistance, The average celeb
Millionare average two contestants an hour. That would be four shows,
and the models were done by three.

4) The series ends Thanksgiving evening.

Do we know how many bands have been allowed to perform more than one

My guess would be "Maze." It was his directorial debut and has
traveled the festival circuit for a while. (It was in the Santa Barbara
film fest this spring.) And I think I recall the TVBarn-linked article
about feature films premiering on cable mentioning "Maze" as either
opening in more theaters or premiering on cable this fall.

A quick glance at the other movies of his recently smells more
like artsy, barely-released art-house independents to me.

I understand they're releasing a film he directed and stars in (with
Laura Linney), MAZE, in the next week or so. It was much, much better
than I hoped. It was shown at last year's San Jose Cinequest Film
Festival. His performance as an artist with Tourette's Syndrome was
fantastic. But then again, I've visited Rossyln, Washington.

See ya,

Michael.

Some call it Halloween, others call it Wednesday. I like to call today "Gladys."

	Among today's marathons are:

A Cartoon Network 24 hour session of "Night of The Living Doo" (since last Midnight), 24 hours of Scooby toons with funky interstitial bits from David Cross, Gary Coleman, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. <http://www.cartoonnetwork.com/SCOOBY>

Nick at Nite has haunted / scary episodes of "The Brady Bunch" (9 PM), "Diff'rent Strokes" with guest star Ray Bolger (9:30 PM) "Family Ties" - the gun control show (10 PM)
"Cheers" - Andy the stalker (10:30 PM) "Cheers" - Carla's haunted house (11 PM) Laverne and Shirley (11:30 PM) a "Cheers" Halloween party (1 AM) and "Cheers" Vs. Gary's Old Towne Tavern (1:30 AM.)

TVLand offers up the same Laverne and Shirley (but earlier) (8 PM) "The Odd Couple: The Exorcists" (8:30 PM) "The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Ghost of A. Chantz" (9 PM) "Barney Miller:
The Ghost (9:30 PM) "The Andy Griffith Show: The Haunted House" (10 PM) "Leave It to Beaver: The Haunted House" (10:30 PM)

TNN - The National Network goes totally MAD with a marathon of MAD TV episodes (from 3 PM) hosted by several of the "I Know What You Did" / "Scream" kids, along with Robert Englund and Susan Sarandon. <http://tnnonline.com>

Noggin has a "Ghostwriter" marathon with a viewer selected 4-part story (8 PM).

====

On NBC's "Ed" (8 PM), A kiddy-show host tells one of the kids at the Stuckeybowl Halloween party to run away, and Warren tries to make a name for himself at a school bonfire.

The A&E "Biography" (8 PM) explores why Vincent Price was scary, except when he appeared on the '60s "Batman" series.

Have your wife get the door, Baseballapalooza continues on FOX (8 PM).

On the WB, Dawson's daddy dies on A Very Special "Dawson's Creek" (8 PM). Hugs all around.

Bill O'Reilly does his best to scare the nation tonight on FOX News' "The O'Reilly Factor" (8 PM), and it's not a Halloween show.

Uh-oh, those guys in sheets may not be pretending they're ghosts. The Discovery Channel profiles the spooky kooks with a look "Inside the KKK: Faces of Hate" (8 PM).

Anna Deavere Smith and "Emergency's" Kevin Tighe are among the eclectic guests on NBC's "West Wing," (9 PM) which features a veto showdown (with override threat) over the estate tax. C.J. strikes back, and Charlie may seek immunity.

What's the missing reality show element that keeps people from watching CBS' "The Amazing Race" (9 PM)? Show me "RATS"!!!! And it's the #1 answer, would you like to pass or play? Louie, we'll pass!

PBS offers highbrow scares with "Sweeney Todd in Concert: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (9 PM) <http://www.pbs.org/demonbarber>

"Felicity" & A? (9 PM) To stay in school, she has to enter a beauty...er "Scholarship" pageant competing against guest star Monica. Even worse the swimsuit contest, Felicity thinks she may be pregnant, if only someone wise -- pageant judge Joyce Brothers -- were around to offer advice...

E(h)! counts down the 13 scariest movies of all time on "Rank" (9 PM) with help from Brooke Burke, Wes Craven, Aisha Tyler, Ben Stein, Jessica Biel, James Van Der Beek, Robert Patrick, Chyna, Eric Stoltz, and the ever-present Robert Englund, followed by "The E! Hollywood Story of 'Scream'" (10 PM)

While not an official Halloween show, ABC's "Bob Patterson" (9:30) does feature the Bride of E!, Jules Asner. Eeeeek!

"The Drew Carey Show" (9:30 PM) celebrates Halloween with (sigh) yet another owner for Winfred-Louder, guest star "The Fonz," and a dentist's visit with the always-askew Charles Fleischer.

CBS has a one hour greatest hits compilation of the 6-hour "Concert for New York City" (10 PM) from a few weeks back. The original broadcast proved some things just don't need to be live. Tonight's version spares viewers what seemed like an hour of production delays, pointless introductions (mostly from various "Saturday Night Live" cast members) and hopefully, an unnecessarily crass firefighter. "Concert: Lite" cuts to the good stuff: performances by Sir McCartney, Elton, "Gimmie" Mick, Eric Clapton, the Who, Billy Joel, James Taylor, and teenybopper acts The Backstreet Boys and Destiny's Child. <http://www.cbs.com/primetime/movies_specials/spe_concert_new_york.shtml>

Jay has the creepy David Lynch and vastly overrated Hank Azaria, while Dave has the creepy Amy Sedaris and the slightly overrated Kevin Spacey (both 11:35ish).

Subject: Fear Factor extended play....

[Of course they could always air it ad-free brought to you by Listerine. --
Tom]

Wednesday October 31 4:04 AM ET
NBC puts celeb ``Fear'' into sweeps
By Josef Adalian

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - NBC is stirring up some ``Fear'' this sweeps.

The network has decided to schedule a celebrity edition of its controversial
reality series ``Fear Factor'' on the last Tuesday of the all-important
November ratings sweeps. The episode will air Nov. 27 at 8 p.m., bumping
``Three Sisters'' and the on-hiatus ``Emeril.''

Celebs recruited for the special include Donny Osmond, Kelly Preston (``Jerry
Maguire''), David Hasselhoff and Brooke Burns (``Baywatch''), rapper Coolio
and Joanie Laurer (aka Chyna from the WWF.) Each will play for charity.

NBC wouldn't say exactly what kinds of stunts celebs would have to endure,
though NBC Entertainment president Jeff Zucker said one challenge involved
worms and scorpions.

In a bit of further sweeps strategizing, the episode will run seven minutes
over its usual hourlong length, running smack dab into the first part of the
fourth episode of Fox's much-hyped, critically acclaimed new drama ``24.''

NBC had seriously considered stunting the celeb edition opposite next week's
series premiere of ``24,'' but opted against the move because of inadequate
promo lead time.

New episodes of ``Fear'' weren't slated to bow until January; the celeb
edition was going to serve as the show's second-season premiere. But when a
rough cut of the episode came in a few weeks ago, NBC executives started
thinking a sweeps play made sense.

``We just wanted to get it on,'' said Zucker. ``It's a really great
episode.''

``Fear'' will still debut as planned in January, with NBC upping its total
order of the series to 15 episodes. There's no word yet on a time slot, but
insiders speculate NBC may run episodes Mondays at 9 p.m., displacing ``Third
Watch.''

In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, the subsequent Afghan war and the
anthrax scare, some industry observes had questioned whether ``Fear'' would
still pack the same punch it did during its megasuccessful run this past
summer. Questions also have been raised about whether it's appropriate to
subject contestants to staged frightfests when Americans are facing terror
alerts and biochem scares in their daily lives.

Zucker isn't buying any of those arguments.

``What the audience has been telling us over the last few weeks is that they
want to be entertained,'' he said. ``It's our job to entertain people, and
this show is incredibly entertaining. I'm not going to get caught up in
psychoanalyzing the American public.''

What's more, Zucker believes the special ``Fear'' will be a big boost to
NBC's Tuesday bottom line. ``We're going to probably double what we would
have done in that time slot,'' he said.

If the first celeb ``Fear'' does well, NBC will likely order one or two more.
``Fear'' was the summer's top-rated series among adults in the coveted 18-49
age group, and averaged 12.3 million viewers per episode.

CBS' new drama "Citizen Baines" has been canceled upon request from the

Tuesday to pull the plug on the struggling Saturday drama starring James

What the ? This is the first time I've heard of a show being
canceled on request of the producers. What's the real story? What's

What happened is this. The show is dead. Part of the problem may be the show
itself. The other problem is the show is on Saturday nights. CBS doesn't seem
to be willing to move the show somewhere else. Maybe John Wells was promised
Monday nights if "Family Law" faltered to some preset floor. Clearly, it does
not have a future on Saturday nights.

I'm guessing (using rough numbers) CBS is paying AOL about $1 million per
episode of "Baines," and AOL is spending about $2 million to make each
episode. If this show only lasts 13 episodes or even 22 episodes, the only
thing AOL is going to get out of the deal is losing tens of millions of
dollars. They wouldn't have enough episodes for syndication. So, with no long
term gain, might as well take the short term margin benefits. This way, AOL
saves around $4 million dollars. And maybe they'd give the producers half of
it.

And if you think a company that's worth hundreds of billions of dollars cares
about a couple of million dollars, just remember that this is the outfit that
turned 22 episode seasons into the 21 episode season all in the name of making
their 2000 third quarter look better.

Actually, David Kelly requested that Snoops be killed a couple of seasons
ago on ABC.

I imagine the reasons are exactly the ones Wells gave. Saturday is a hard
night economically for the networks. ABC has considered giving it back to
affiliates. NBC has talked about using it to experiment with really cheap
shows.

 And Lisa de Moraes
pointed out that it is the oldest skewing show on the
oldest skewing network. Still, it is a shame since the few episodes I saw
were pretty good.

I also imagine the impetus came as much from Warner which didn't see much
of a future for the show in syndication in the unlikely event it survived
for a few seasons.

All this makes it unlikely there will be another drama with a lead
character that old. At least until an older demo becomes more profitable.

I understand the economics reasons for AOLTW wanting to cancel
Baines. But it's just odd to see the cancellation desire come out of
"Wells" and not a higher-up at AOLTW. So he must have got pressure from
AOLTW, and that was the story behind the story I was curious about.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would see he's making a good
product and take the initiative to stop it just to save the company some
money. Especially not someone with as much pull as Wells.

	Thanks for clarifying.

Wells would've probably asked for another shot if there was a good slot
available at CBS. There isn't right now, really (as much as many of you
would probably like to see "Family Law" or "Judging Amy" jettisoned).

If I am reading this correctly, was "Baines" co-owned by the network or did
WB and Wells own the series completely?

I was kind of disappointed to see that Evan Handler's appearance on
the West Wing this week was limited to the "previously on West

first time an actor played two different characters on back to back
TV shows.

He's apparently already done his Law & Order spot (last year about
this time) which may well make him the only actor to have appeared on
an entire evening's shows on one network. If "It's Like You Know..."
hadn't been an ABC show, they could re-run the relevant WW,Ed, and

What's a World Series (8 PM) without anyone breaking a bat and trying to cause a riot? I mean it's on FOX this year!

A Rolling Stone gathers the blues for Bravo, in "Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey" (8 PM) a tribute to some of his musical heroes including B.B. King, Sam Phillips, and Wilson Pickett.

"The E! True Hollywood Story" (8 PM) takes a look at the short life of "Herve Villechaize." Yes, it's a full hour show.

Gee, an episode of NBC's "Friends" (8 PM) with a celeb guest star (Yawn.) Sean Penn oddly hasn't been on yet, and Phoebe tries to score with him, making her twin sister (guest star Patti Duke) jealous.

On a very special episode of TNT's "NBA Basketball," (8 PM) Michael Jordan tries to score with the Wizards, making Atlanta jealous.

On CBS' "Survivor: Africa" (8 PM), tribes try to score liquid from the stream, making an angry water buffalo (guest star Shelley Winters) jealous.

The Learning Channel explores the case of worried mother Susan Smith (8 PM) whose children were carjacked. "Oops, did I say they were kidnapped, I meant' I MURDERED THEM,' never mind."

The eight-hour "United We Stand" concert in D.C. gets heavily edited down to a 2-hour ABC special (8 PM). Pseudo-"Beach Boy" John Stamos hosts the event which features Backstreet Boys (woooooooooo!), Janet (Miss Jackson, if you're nasty), a woman who claims to be Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Aerosmith, Rod Stewart, Ricky Martin, Carole King, P. Diddy, James Brown and Train. Oh, and Janet's brother.

It's the best episode of NBC' "Inside Schwartz" ever! The kind that doesn't air.

In a A&E "Biography" double header Florence Henderson (8 PM) and Robert Reed (9 PM) could have gotten away with it, if it weren't for those pesky kids and their damned dog.

On "The X-Creatures," (9 PM) the Discovery Channel hunts for Bigfoot and the Yeti, as neither has done an episode of "Friends" yet.

Woody Harrelson proposes on NBC's "Will & Grace & Nathan," (9 PM) obviously Grace accepts otherwise they wouldn't have changed the name.

On the Discovery Channel's "Lost Tombs of Peru" (10 PM), the Sican civilization scores, making Spain jealous.

NBC's ER (10 PM) hires a French barmaid to run things. Yeah, that sounds about right.

What appears to be a rejiggered of the pilot of CBS' "The Agency" (10 PM) finally airs. Formerly about an Osama bin Laden terrorist attack in London, it's now about an "impending" terrorist attack "somewhere" in Europe.

ABC's "Primetime Thursday" (10 PM) casts pearls before swindlers, and Sebastian Junger reports from the Taliban frontline: "Yo Diane, this is really cool!"

Well, now that the series is at 2-2, there's a roughly 50% chance of
game 7 in just about every calculation of the odds (including the
incorrect ones!).

Throw in a 100% chance of Toy Story 2 on ABC plus NBC's mini-series

I hope Denver gets the "Sweeney Todd" performance eventually. It was
exceptionally good, barring some jumpy camera work. And the opening

Hmm, well after an exhaustive search of the listings of guest stars
at imdb.com, it turns out that Shrug's been beat to the punch:
Mike Starr (Kenny/Sen Tony Marino/2 L&Oers)

Interestingly it seems almost more likely that an Ed actor will have
been on L&O than not. But then given the filming location and
dependence on a rotating cast of guest stars (on L&O especially),
this shouldn't be that big of a surprise.

I remember participating in market research when I was younger and

etc."

I assume that the younger demographic is desirable to advertisers
because their research shows that young people are the most likely to
make buying decisions based on commercials. Older consumers tend to
be more rigid in their buying patterns. If this is the case, an older
demo will never be more profitable to advertisers, and media buyers'
tastes are in fact the taste of the target audience. Has anybody in

[And upon openign bin Ladens cave he turned up only a couple of empty anthrax

Geraldo Rivera joins Fox News as war correspondent
By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Controversial television journalist Geraldo Rivera
said Thursday he is quitting his own seven-year-old talk show on CNBC to take
a job as a war correspondent for rival cable outlet Fox News Channel.

Rivera, 58, said his decision to return to the trenches of broadcast news was
sparked by the Sept. 11 attacks on the America and the U.S. government's
resulting war on terrorism.

"I'm a reporter, and this fight against terror is the biggest story of our
times," Rivera said in a statement prepared for Thursday's broadcast of
CNBC's "Rivera Live." "And as much as I love this job, I can't stay anchored
to this desk any longer."

Rivera said the last broadcast of his show on CNBC would be Nov. 16, after
which he would join the news team assembled at Fox News Channel as a war
correspondent.

With Rivera's departure, CNBC said it would end his nightly show and extend
its business news programming into prime time. Rivera had hosted the topical
interview show since 1994.

Rivera's previous experience as a foreign correspondent has included stints
covering drug trafficking in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the 1973 Yom Kippur
War in Israel and more recent conflicts in Central America, the Philippines,
Lebanon and the Balkans.

Rivera has won numerous Emmys and other awards since he began his career in
1970 as a reporter with WABC-TV. He sprang to fame in 1972 with an expose of
the squalid conditions at Staten Island's Willowbrook State School for the
Mentally Retarded.

Since then, the career of the aggressive, often brash journalist and TV host
has wavered between spectacular success and embarrassing flops.

He scored a major coup by securing the Zapruder film footage of President
John F. Kennedy's assassination for its initial TV presentation. And he
logged substantial on-camera time for ABC news magazines "Good Night,
America," "Good Morning, America" and "20/20."

But his heavily hyped, highly rated 1986 prime-time documentary special "The
Mystery of Al Capone's Vaults" proved a bust when the gangster's purported
inner sanctum turned up empty. Two years later, Rivera suffered a broken nose
on national television when an on-camera brawl erupted between the head of
the Congress of Racial Equality and neo-Nazis on his daytime trash talk show
"Geraldo!"

That show, later renamed "The Geraldo Rivera Show," ran 11 years in
syndication.

Rivera debuted in prime time on CNBC with "Rivera Live" in 1994, several
months before the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, and made inroads back to
respectability with his extensive coverage of the O.J. Simpson affair.

1990, and was renewed for the full 1990-91 season. The ratings were
pretty decent for both seasons, and NBC frequently ran episodes back-
to-back on Saturdays. From what I remember, NBC was willing to pick
the show up for a third year, but Carol thought it was too difficult
to sustain the comedy-anthology format for 22 episodes per year, and
wanted to go back to her old hour-long variety format. NBC wasn't
interested, so she took the show to CBS.

'TONIGHT SHOW WITH JAY LENO' REPEATS AS LATE-NIGHT
RATINGS CHAMP

NEW YORK -- November 1, 2001 -- NBC's TONIGHT SHOW
WITH JAY LENO topped the weeknight late-night standings in
key demographics and total viewers for the fifth time in as many
weeks this season, based on measurable in-home viewing data
provided today by Nielsen Media Research.

Even with a slate of previously broadcast shows airing during the
last full week prior to the start of the November sweep, TONIGHT
won the week ending October 28, 2001 with a 2.0 rating and nine
share in adults 18-49, a 1.6/7 in adults 18-34, a 2.3/9 in adults
25-54 and an average of 5.3 million viewers overall.

Through five weeks this season, the top-rated TONIGHT SHOW
has increased its delivery of adults 18-49 (up two percent),
adults 18-34 (up three percent), adults 25-54 (up four percent)
and total viewers (up nine percent) compared to its averages
during the first five weeks of the 2000-01 season (a period of
time when the show aired only first-run episodes).

NBC also received a strong performance last week from
rebroadcast episodes of LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN,
which averaged a 1.0/7 in adults 18-49, a 1.0/7 in adults 18-34, a
1.1/7 in adults 25-54 and 2.2 million viewers overall (up eight
percent compared to the show's average with rebroadcast
shows during the same week last year).

LATE NIGHT beat CBS' "Late Late Show" by 43 percent in adults
18-34, 25 percent in adults 18-49, 38 percent in adults 25-54
and 45 percent in total viewers.

Season to date, LATE NIGHT has increased its delivery of adults
18-34 by nine percent, adults 18-49 by six percent, adults 25-54
by eight percent and total viewers by 17 percent compared to its
averages during the first five weeks of the 2000-01 season.

Tom Poston guests on CBS' "The Ellen Show" (8:30 PM) aka "Match Game 2001." Character actors need love too.

Fox Family Channel re-airs the underwhelming (very unauthorized) TV movie "Michael Jordan: An American Hero" (8 PM). Your kids will want to know about Jordan's temper and gambling problems about as much as he wants you to. And yes, NBC's "The Jesse Ventura" story was better.

ABC explores post WTC "America '01" (8 PM) starting with profiles those who escaped the Pentagon attack by a twist of fate.

PBS' Life 360 (10 PM) looks at "Roots" as a group of black Americans makes a pilgrimage to Senegal, an Alaska woman presents her family tree and singer Darius de Haas performs.

ABC's "Thieves" (9 PM) rips off an old Get Smart episode sending our mismatched duo south of the border down Me-hico way to nab a general.

The History Channel presents a look at the "Golden Gate Bridge" (8 PM). dare I suggest you tape this... just in case?

I usually time shift the satellite feed from the night before and I've
noticed it runs long as well (for some reason, the sat feed for CBS shows
have the full breaks in them instead of a fade down / fade up like most
feeds).
CBS has a habit of doing this. It was next to impossible to fit two
episodes of "Now & Again" on a single tape because it always ran over by a
minute or two.

I went over it slowly with my TiVo and basically got the same thing, didn't
know if it was "The Cap" or "the Creep" or what...

Gotta say I was glad to see Linda go last night, guess the gods weren't with
her. It's so funny that the elders are getting so upset at the youth for
getting rid of them when it's exactly what they planned.

And... Anyone have any ideas what is going to happen next week? For those who
didn't see it, they teased some big event that has never happened on the show
before, set for the first 15 minutes, which will change the nature of the
game. I imagine it's an early merger or pre-merger trade or something.
Perhaps group all the elders and all the youngsters into two seperate tribes?

The rumor is that the tribes will be broken up into *three* tribes. This
has been whispered about all along--of course, Burnett isn't saying. It's
obviously a response to the fact that the fortysomethings have been bounced
out by the kids. Since CBS had a Standards and Practices person on location
this time (which they didn't have for the first two series, as I understand
it), it was approved by that representative before it was done--if it was
done (after all, Burnett *is* a master of misdirection).

I think the elders are more upset that the youths are a bunch of lazy,
classless, immature dolts! I am halfway between 'em in age, but I have to
say that I'm siding with the "oldsters."

It has long been rumored that in an effort to be new & different this
season, the two tribes will be split into three at some point in the game.
My guess is that is what's coming next week. You've gotta love this blurb
from CBS.com:

"The Survivors thought they knew the game, but the game is about to change
-- forever! Don't miss the first 15 minutes of the all-new SURVIVOR AFRICA
next Thursday!"

I was a little confused by that wording (first 15 minutes? What about the
remaining 45?) until it occurred to me that they're trying REAL HARD to
make people turn away from FRIENDS.

Which was essentially the voice-over of the promo that ran at the end of
last night's show before the credits/voting record/final thoughts replacing
the usual next-episode preview V/Od by Probst.

I'd say you're partly right. Another thing is that younger adults tend to be
setting up their homes and making more big purchases -- furnishings, etc.
And, they tend to be more voracious consumers of soft drinks, fast
food/casual dining restaurant food, beer, new cars, groceries (with the
likelihood of kids in the home being higher with the head-of-household under
50), and electronics.

There are broad generalisms, but most big companies do extensive market
research. They know not only who their consumers are, but as you say those
who would respond to TV advertising -- to a special offer, to general brand
awareness, to a compare-and-save type of ad, etc.

[Sure, but will she roll down the hill for each meeting? -- Tom]

Gilbert Elected SAG President
By LOUINN LOTA

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actress Melissa Gilbert was elected president of the
Screen Actors Guild, union officials said, defeating actress Valerie Harper
in a fiercely contested race that could end up being contested over a flaw in
thousands of ballots.

Gilbert, who played Laura Ingalls on the popular television series ``Little
House on the Prairie,'' received 12,280 votes, union spokesman Greg Krizman
said late Friday. Harper, who was wisecracking Rhoda Morgenstern on ``The
Mary Tyler Moore Show'' and later ``Rhoda,'' received 10,692 votes.

Eugene Boggs finished third with 2,553 votes, Krizman said.

The election took place during a time of discord within the union's ranks,
following a lengthy commercial actors' strike last year and a barely averted
walkout by movie and TV actors earlier this year.

Many prominent actors sided with either Gilbert or Harper during the
campaign.

Friday's results came just a day after SAG's election committee decided to
defer a decision on whether to impound the ballots because of a missing
signature line on nearly a third of them.

Nearly 24,000 ballots sent to SAG members in New York failed to include the
signature line, which critics said could allow their validity to be
challenged. The other 74,000 sent around the country include a line that
states: ``Voter: Print and sign your name on the back of this envelope.''

Guild officials downplayed the effect of the flaw, saying in a written
statement that each ballot envelope is already affixed with a printed member
identity label that verifies its legitimacy.

``If somebody wants to bring a challenge they are free to do so. The
constitution says they have to wait until after the election,'' Krizman said.

None of the candidates had raised serious objection to the flaw.

The trade paper Variety reported Thursday that Hollywood SAG member Gordon
Drake planned to challenge the results.

``I respect the decision of the elections committee, but I will move forward
with my challenge. The issue is credibility to the members. They need to know
that the election is valid under the rules of the constitution and bylaws,''
Drake said.

My mother lives in Memphis, and this morning she told me about an unusual
collaboration between the local NBC and PAX affiliates in that city. Yes, I
know NBC owns PAX, but what occurred on Thursday sounds awfully strange.

Apparently, the local NBC affiliate preempted the Thursday night line-up in
favor of the Grizzlies' opening game, the team's first in Memphis. The two
episodes of Friends, one an original and the other a repeat, were shown on
the PAX affiliate at 7 (CT). Diagnosis Murder was shown as usual, at 8, and
ER was shown at 9 -- on PAX. Will and Grace and Just Shoot Me will be
broadcast tonight beginning at 10:30 p.m., on the local NBC affiliate
following the local news.

Now, it surprised me that PAX would be showing both Friends and ER. Then I
thought about the first Friends episode. I couldn't recall this particular
episode containing anything specific that would likely offend PAX viewers.
I didn't watch the second (repeat) Friends episode, so I don't know if that
one contained anything objectionable, and I didn't watch ER -- but I suspect
they cleared the censor, too.

However, I did watch Will and Grace (but not Just Shoot Me). W&G was over
the top, even more so than usual -- even a buddy of mine commented that he
didn't know how the show could get away with what it got away with on
Thursday night.

So I'm suspecting someone at PAX must have screened the Thursday night
line-up and deemed Friends and ER okay, but drew the line at Will and Grace.
(Even if W&G just happened to be squeaky clean for one night, I suspect gay
characters are just a plain no-no on PAX.)

Anyone else heard of similar strange happenings?

The Emmys (tonight, on CBS, 8 PM) used to be an event on the level of the Oscars. Other networks would put up reruns and just brace for low ratings. The delays of September 11th and the following bombing raids have pushed it into the November sweeps period, where there's more competition than ever.

For the kids, a week after "Toy Story" comes "Toy Story 2" on ABC's "The Wonderful World of Disney/PIXAR" (7 PM). Were you aware they had a new film in theatres?

There's championship baseball for Dad, (Fox, 8 PM) or more New York sports on ESPN as the Jets play the Saints at 8:30.

Showtime has "The Wilde Girls" (8 PM) with Olivia Newton-John and real life daughter in one of those special mother and daughter / "Thelma & Louise" journey of a Lifetime (Network) things.

Normal people get chewed out by Anne on NBC's "The Weakest Link" (8 PM). If you were assuming this was still enjoyable, we're sorry, you banked too late.

TNN's "Fame for 15" (8 PM) repeats its "Sex and Violence in Hollywood" episode with "Hollywood Hookers" (likely either Divine Brown or perhaps Madame Heidi Fleiss) and the Rodney King beating.

PBS' "The American Masters" (9 PM) documents the life of show tune composer Richard Rogers, with and without Hammerstien on the side.

War, ugh, good God y'all, what is it good for? Oh yeah, that's right... ratings. I've always been of the mind that war should be hell, not entertainment, so NBC's 4-hour "Uprising," (9 PM) while inspiring and star studded will probably be passed over.

A tape will run though for ABC's "Alias" (9 PM). Is it more than just a rip-off of both the Manchurian Candidate and the Michael Douglas asylum thriller "Don't Say A Word" from last month? I'll never teeeeeeeeell.

Gotta love the family friendly PAXploitation on tonight's "Ponderosa," (9 PM) with a tale of the Donner party. Share it with someone you love, and pass the salt.

HBO'S "Band of Brothers" (9 PM) finds Hitler's mountaintop retreat. Good to know they're keepin' it real. How were they able to do this without Ben Affleck in every battle in the war?

Drew Carey is Vince McMahon! You were hoping he'd be Ed? The guy who helped create Carey's show runs the WB's "Nikki," (9:30) so that explains his subtle sweeps appearance as an evil wrestling magnate.

Hugh Hefner is old and has a lot of sex. There's your family friendly version of the profanity laced "New York Friar's Club R*@S..." on Comedy Central (10 PM, and at least 100 more times in coming months).

Eugene has had enough of Jimmy's screw-ups on ABC's "The Practice," (10 PM), as I think most of us have as well. He is still on contract though. Maybe Eleanor will finally wise up that he's in love with her? Nah.

Doris Roberts has won the Emmmy for supporting actress in a comedy series.

Hee hee. I assume that more for the "benefit" of viewers on the Left Coast.

So despite the fact that my on-screen programming says ALIAS is on here at 9

they show ALIAS next, anyone know if they did this to compete with all the

I don't think it will be shown at 10 -- there was an announcement at 9PM
(at least on my affiliate) saying that tonight's ALIAS had been replaced
by an "encore" of THE PRACTICE and that the show would return in two
weeks. I don't see anything in the episode description on abc.com that

Ha!

I thought Ellen's opening remarks at the Emmys were hilarious, especially
the line about how they'd be keeping people apprised of the World Series
score, but couldn't imagine that FOX would break in with announcements
about who won which emmys.

Guess she was wrong . . . (too funny).

"The Wonder Years" (7:30) joins the daily Fox Family Channel lineup of ABC '80s shows you're kinda tired of, having previously been on TNN, and /or Nick @ Nite.

FOX's "Boston Public" (8 PM) continues misbehaving, also with a controversial pregnancy, this one involving a "smart girl," who wants to keep her baby. Ooooh. Papa don't preach...

Ricki Lake begins a run as Doug's sister on CBS' "King of Queens (8 PM).

Robin Quivers and Kevin Nealon get about a half hour each in the hotseat on ABC's "Who Isn't Already A Millionaire?" (8 PM, whenever)

"Dateline NBC" (8 PM) cons the public... officially. No "Weakest Link" tonight.

Jennifer Saunders presents a quick fix of depravity with a prep course on "How to Be Absolutely Fabulous" (8 PM), to prepare the uninitiated for new episodes. Kinda like an all-femme NY Friars Roast.

UPN has a night of 'Lil surprises with rapper Lil' Romeo on "The Hughleys" (8 PM), rapper Lil' Zane on One on One (8:30 PM), and Lil' Bow Wow on "The Parkers." (9 PM) "Girlfriends" (9:30 PM) hits the nude beach for lil'... clothing.

Either the "Uprising" (9 PM) succeeds, or NBC wasted 2 hours of your time Sunday night.

The WB presents the treat of "Vampire babies" on "Angel" (9 PM) as a Darla / Rosemary is part of one of those end-of-the-world "Xena" pregnancies.

I don't even know why semi-lawyer Ling is appointed a judge on FOX's "Ally McBeal" (9 PM) but I'm assuming it's just a cocaine-induced dream of Robert Downey, Jr.

PBS "American Roots Music" (10 PM, or whenever) goes commercial as Western, swing, bluegrass and honky-tonk hit the big time as influenced by the labor movement, WWII, urban migration, progressive politics and the McCarthy era. Features threads in this musical quilt tonight are Bob Wills, Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs, Ernest Tubb, Lefty Frizzell, Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie, John and Alan Lomax, Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup via Elvis, as told by Scruggs, Merle Haggard, Marty Stuart, Arlo Guthrie, Sam Phillips, Kitty Wells and B.B. King.

CNN's "Newsnight" makes its regularly scheduled debut with "Downtown" Aaron Brown (10 PM, repeated at 1 AM).

Dave has Jack Black & Tony Bennett (11:35ish), Jay has "Buffy" and "From Hell's" directorial team the Hughes brothers.

So if 10 out of 27 winners didn't show up and therefore didn't make
speeches (okay, 9 out of 27 if we count Steve Martin's usurpation),
how badly planned was the Emmy telecast that the last few major
categories' nominees were shown with stills instead of clips and the

I guess Phil Driscoll's trumpet playing was so absorbing (I'm

The late switch probably means the World Series was the dealbreaker...
but check out this story that bears out some aspects of the show's
plot...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Associated Press
Published November 5, 2001, 6:52 AM CST

NEW YORK -- A secret office operated by the CIA was destroyed in the
terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, seriously disrupting
intelligence operations.

The undercover station was in 7 World Trade Center, a smaller office
tower that fell several hours after the collapse of the twin towers on
Sept. 11, a U.S. government official said.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that immediately
after the attack, a special CIA team scoured the rubble in search of
secret documents and intelligence reports stored in the station, either
on paper or in computers. It was not known whether the efforts were
successful.

A CIA spokesman declined to comment on the existence of the office,
which was first reported in Sunday's editions of The New York Times.

The New York station was behind the false front of another federal
organization, which the Times did not identify. The station was a base
of operations to spy on and recruit foreign diplomats stationed at the
United Nations...

>The agency's officers in New York often work undercover, posing as
diplomats and business executives<, among other things. They have been
deeply involved in counterterrorism efforts in the New York area,
working jointly with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other
agencies.

...The agency is prohibited from conducting domestic espionage
operations against Americans, but it maintains stations in a number of
major United States cities, where CIA case officers try to meet and
>recruit students< and other foreigners to return to their countries
and spy for the United States....

Have you seen the Walgreens ad for Halloween costumes et al., with the

Also saw an ad for new alcohol-free Stridex pads. Reminded me of a
story I once heard, veracity unknown. It seems Bactine once came out
with a sting-free formula. It was promoted heavily, but it tanked.
Research determined that people believed that if it didn't sting, it
didn't work. So they put a little alcohol in, and sales skyrocketed.
Not only do I wonder how the new Stridex product will fare, but now I
wonder if the alcohol in the original formula was functional or
psychological.

I'd think Ellen's trip to the press room was likely meant to help bring them

I think ABC is astute to find a spokesman who will point out the
astuteness he and his cohorts exhibited in this situation. It's
almost as if the network doesn't trust its viewers to reach the same

I didn't watch any of "Uprising" last night, as I was partly watching the
Emmys and partly getting some stuff done. Tonight after "Boston Public" --
which seems to have added some extra Kelley screwiness this season -- I
flipped over to catch a little of it. At first I thought my local affiliate
had messed up their automation and cut to break in the middle of a show
segment. Then I realized there was a pattern...it went right out of a scene
to about a half-second of black screen, then right into a national spot.
Right into a Christmas-y jingle, in one case.

Now, usually in any network fare -- let alone one of their premium sweeps
originals -- they have "bumpers" that transition into and out of a break. The
only one I saw for "Uprising" came at the top of the hour. It was almost as
if the thing were made for being run with limited commercial interruption,
and then had to be busted up.

Did anyone else find that strange? Especially, given the grim subject matter,
I found it odd there wasn't a little something cushioning one's transition
out of the Warsaw sewer back to 21st century capitalism.
