KRON's fallen out of the top four stations. That's allowing Young
to shop it and KCAL as duopoly plays for operators already in their
respective markets. (FCC duopoly rules allow only one of the two
stations owned by any given entity in any given market to be among
the top four in ratings.)

on May 22

"GLORY DAYS" Moves to Mondays at 9:00 p.m. ET

Burbank, CA (February 11, 2002) - Nearly four years ago in
September of 1998, The WB premiered FELICITY to great critical
acclaim and millions tuned in to see the curly-haired heroine
graduate from high school. Now, as the series shoots the
episode marking Felicity's college commencement, it was
announced today by Jordan Levin, President, Entertainment of The WB
that the college drama will bid farewell this May.

Starring Golden Globe Award winner Keri Russell, FELICITY
returns to The WB on Wednesday, March 20 with 11 new episodes
in a row culminating in a two-hour series finale event on May 22.

"'Felicity' was one of the shows that helped put us on the map and
establish The WB as a place for quality programming," said Mr. Levin.
"It seems fitting to conclude such a coming-of-age story as the
characters move on from college."

FELICITY has been off the air since its "Winter Finale" broadcast in
December to make room for the new Kevin Williamson suspense thriller
GLORY DAYS. GLORY DAYS will move to the coveted Monday 9:00 p.m.
timeslot following The WB's top-rated series 7th HEAVEN beginning
March 11. ANGEL returns to its regular Monday berth on April 15 with
all new episodes through the season finale in May.

The final 11 episodes of FELICITY will provide closure for
the characters and viewers alike, with an emotional college
graduation along with weddings, funerals and surprising plot twists.

Created by J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, executive produced by
Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Tony Krantz, Abrams, Reeves, Jennifer
Levin and Laurie McCarthy, FELICITY is produced by Imagine
Television in association with Touchstone Television.

GLORY DAYS was created by Kevin Williamson, who serves as executive
producer along with Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein and Billy
Campbell. The series is produced by Outerbanks Entertainment in

Seems to me that this would be right up Comedy Central's alley--if they
could get the studios to provide clips. Hell, I'd think Tom Green would
show up just to piss everybody off.

Interesting that among the nominees for "Glitter"'s screenplay was Cheryl L.
West, who is a very talented playwright with a Chicago connection. But
considering that she was only credited with "story," if her original script
had any quality to it the legions of hack rewriters (and probably Mariah
herself) took it all out.

Subject: "Friends" will return

[Did you catch the fast-tracked spot touting the news during
tonight's Olympics?]

"FRIENDS" WILL BE THERE FOR US … FOR A FINALE SEASON

"Friends," the most popular television show in America, will return
next year for its ninth and final season.

Warner Bros. Television, Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions and the
stars of the number-one rated "Friends" have agreed to return next
season to the NBC Television Network, it was announced today in a
joint statement issued by the cast, NBC West Coast President Scott
Sassa, NBC Entertainment President Jeff Zucker, Kevin Bright, Marta
Kauffman, David Crane and Warner Bros. Television President Peter
Roth.

"We are enormously pleased and excited to be returning for a ninth
season," said Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow,
Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. "We could not
ignore the outpouring of public support for the show and we are
looking forward to creating one more season with the best writers,
producers, directors and production people in television."

"The return of ‘Friends' is a wonderful event for everyone…the fans,
NBC, Warner Bros., the producers and the cast. We're appreciative to
the cast, producers and crew for the creativity and dedication that
has made the show soar to new heights this season," said Sassa.

"We've never had better ‘Friends'," said Zucker. "And we're
thrilled. It's no secret how important ‘Friends' is to NBC. But
what's truly great is how important this program is to the entire
country, and that the millions of fans will be able to watch the
series continue for another full year. This is a great day."

Since we all had the same objective, this was the easiest deal we
have ever made," continued Zucker. "Everyone wanted it to work out,
because everyone wanted to be able to send the series out
appropriately…and in style."

-more-

"‘Friends' has been and is a phenomenal success story and with that
comes a great deal of responsibility," said Peter Roth, President,
Warner Bros. Television. "We believe it is essential that ‘Friends'
not only go out on top in the ratings, but also be creatively
complete. We owe that to ourselves, to all of the extraordinarily
talented people who have put their hearts and souls into the show for
nearly a decade and, most importantly, to the millions and millions
of the fans around the world. The reason this deal came together so
amicably is that we all readily understood we could accomplish all of
our goals and serve all of our interests by having a farewell season
devoted to concluding the series."

"The show is at a creative and ratings pinnacle and that is thanks to
the dedication and caring of our cast, our writers, our directors and
the hundreds of people it takes each week to put together a
top-quality popular series," said the series creators and executive
producers Kevin Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane. "We will
devote the entire 24 episodes of the final season to wrap up
storylines and send our characters off into the world. We are all
very excited about being able to do that and very grateful to the
many who will make it possible."

Anchoring television's highest-rated night, the resurgent "Friends"
is enjoying one of its most successful seasons in its eight-year
history. It is currently the No. 1 primetime series for the season
among adults 18-49, total viewers and households. Compared to
averages for the same point in the season last year, "Friends" is up
13 percent among adults 18-49 (12.0/31), 17 percent among total
viewers (24.7 million) and 13 percent in households (15.3/24).

Since its debut season (1994-95), "Friends" has received 33 Emmy
nominations, including four for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Additionally, the cast won a Screen Actors Guild Award in 1996 for
Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Comedy Series and has been
nominated four times for a Golden Globe Award for Best Television
Series, Musical or Comedy. "Friends" won the People's Choice Award
for Favorite New Comedy Series in its first season, and has since won
three more times as Favorite Comedy Series.

The series was created by the writing team of Marta Kauffman & David
Crane. Emmy Award-winning producer Kevin S. Bright is executive
producer with Kauffman and Crane. Scott Silveri and Shana
Goldberg-Meehan, Ted Cohen and Andrew Reich are also executive
producers. "Friends" is a Bright/Kauffman/Crane Production in
association with Warner Bros. Television.

Dave that it seems a little strange for them to be showing up with

Hmmmm, I guess this means that Jennifer Aniston did NOT die in a baby

And of course, if you click a few more times, it's not Aniston who's dead,
it's her character on "Friends" that's supposedly going to be killed off.

And just think how many Lite FM Morning Zoos are going to or have already
talked about this.

The New York Post

R.I.P. RACHEL? WRITERS MULL DEATH OF A ‘FRIEND'

February 11, 2002 -- In a stunning plot twist that would traumatize fans of
TV's "Friends," the smash series' writers might kill off Rachel.
Star magazine says Jennifer Aniston's pregnant character may die while giving
birth to her love child.

The tragedy is just one of three "sensational" story lines being consid ered
by the sitcom's writers.

"There's never been a heart-rending ‘Friends' episode like this before. It
will be the most shocking scene ever played out on TV," a show insider said.

"Dying Rachel will tell Ross, the baby's father, that their closest friends,
Monica and Chandler, should raise the baby girl as their own."

It is not yet known if and when the tragic episode will air. But TV analysts
say the sensational plot line could end up making it one of the top-rated
half-hours of all time.

News of the unnerving plot possibility comes as the show's six stars are
embroiled in salary negotiations for the show's proposed ninth season.

Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc are
reportedly trying to nail down $1 million to $1.25 million per episode.

The cast is currently paid $750,000 apiece per show for the season of 24
programs. They recently joined forces to turn down a raise to $800,000 per
episode last month.

Any deals will need to be finalized by May, when NBC must unveil its fall
schedule to advertisers.

Variety magazine says there is a "50-50" chance the cast will decide not to
make any more shows.

I'm out on the West Coast, so I still haven't seen it, but I don't
plan to, so I'm going to respond anyway. :-)

Aren't The Foo Fighters performing in Salt Lake City as part of
the Olympics nightly concert series? If that's the case, I'd think they
were just told they were performing at the Olympics and not on Leno. Of
course, like you say, they wouldn't refuse to go on Leno if asked, but
that should explain this disconcerting appearance.

The old KOFY (which is now WB20) used to run Streets of San Francisco
(with Michael Douglas rather than Richard Hatch if you were lucky) and
other Quinn Martin productions in the middle of the night.

You could even see episodes of The Untouchables and the Fugitive
 directed by Ida Lupino.

That definately would be better than bad dating shows and infomercials.

And they could bring back a good locally produced show for teenagers
(which was cancelled around 1992 in a round of budget cuts due to the
 last recession).

But I don't expect much creativity there. This is the end of a
Hollywood reporter story (I linked it from other headlines on the site)
about the possibly sale of KCAL in LA by Young to Viacom:

For Young, the deal with CBS on KCAL comes as the media spotlight focused
on a potential buyers for Young's KRON San Francisco.

In December, Young said it had hired Credit Suisse First Boston as a
financial adviser for potential sale of KRON and KCAL. The announcement
came on the same day that NBC announced it had agreed to acquire Granite
Broadcasting's Bay Area station KNTV-TV for $230 million. NBC and Young
tangled in 1999 as both bid on then NBC affiliate KRON when it was put up
for sale as part of the liquidation of Chronicle Publishing's assets.

Young outbid NBC by paying a record $823 million in cash and stock to
acquire KRON. The record setting price paid for the station was followed
by a well-publicized feud with NBC, which led to KRON's losing its NBC
affiliation as of the first of this year. That loss, followed by the soft
ad market, has led to a string of quarterly losses for Young.

Industry observers said the deal with CBS for KCAL might bring in enough
cash to help Young continue operating KRON as an independent until the
business climate for TV stations improves.

The Academy Awards nominations are being read on every TV station as
I type, if you're reading this, you've missed them.

The Travel Channel offers a spycam view of all of those Girls Going
Wild at "Mardi Gras - LIVE 2002" throughout the day.

USA Network has the final three ours of "The Westminster Kennel Club
Dog Show" (8 PM) competition, and if the dogs can't keep racing
around the arena at 55-MPH, Dennis Hopper will make bad bad things
happen.

Dawn gets her wish on UPN's "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (8 PM), which
of course is a bad thing.

The History channel offers "The True Story of Gladiators" (8 PM). It
seems not all of them were Australian.

Steven and Lizzie go out for one last night of freedom before
couplehood on FOX's "Undeclared" (8:30 PM), and there's drinking
involved. Are either of them the father of Rachel's baby?

PBS' "The Secret Life of the Brain" (9 PM) says that we keep getting
new brain cells as we age, although Adam Sandler continues to defy
all possible odds.

On FOX's "24" (9 PM), at "10:00 AM" Jack searches to find his wife
and daughter -- BRING ON THE CAR CHASE! Meanwhile, the Senator learns
of a possible conspiracy within his campaign.

BET's "Journeys in Black" (9 PM) looks at the life of Louis
Farrakhan.

On the WB's "Smallville" (9 PM) Supey's loses his powers to a
classmate during an electrical storm, that on any other show would be
freakish, but is rather commonplace here.

"VH1: Driven" (9 PM) asks what made Marilyn Manson ... the man ...
uh ... freak he is today. I didn't think they would have run out of
subjects this quickly.

	A hurricane strikes A&E's "100 Centre Street" (10 PM). Shhhh, it's
also a metaphor.

Sitcoms? What sitcoms? ABC is game for just about anything tonight
with The Chair (8 PM), an hour of "Whose line is it Anyway?" (9 PM)
and night two of the just plain sad Aaron Spelling edition of "Who
Wants to Be a Millionaire" (10 PM)

Dave has Denis Leary and India Arie, Jay has Kevin Costner and Macy
Gray. Advantage : Dave.

UNNECESSARY GUEST STAR PATROL
FOX's "That '70s Show" (8 PM) Luke Wilson. Plot: Valentines Day,

I wouldn't expect much creativity from the current
management/programming team at KRON, Dino Dinovitz and Pat Patton.
Those of you in Kansas City can thank them for KMBC's hardcore
refusal to air "Nightline" any earlier than midnight, 85 minutes
after the end of the local news.

Instead, during my time in Kansas City, KMBC featured the stupendous
and breath-taking creative step of programming reruns of "The Cosby Show".

KMBC had a fairly reasonable news department, but I always
preferred other stations for news. There was something "March of
Time"-ish about Channel 9, it seemed to me.

Some of the KRON execs have been pointing to KTVK in Phoenix as
their model for indie survival but, having watched KTVK fairly
often whenever I've been in Phoenix, I think I can say that KTVK
has far more creativity in its programming, promotion, and even its
newscasts sometimes than KRON is presently demonstrating.

KRON still puts out better newscasts than KPIX, KGO, or KNTV, in my
opinion, but you have to wonder how long KRON can hold out. I hope
it can.

it's a place they visit as often as needed because Dave is a genuine
fan and they are genuine fans of Letterman, they went on Leno because
NBC wants to promote everything Olympics until the games are over,
including the Foo Fighters, as I understand it, NBC will be airing
some of the concerts in prime-time, they wanted to reach their

Especially when it's the second petition posted today (the first one being
"Futurama"). Does Petition Online have a "Save 'Emeril'" or a "Save 'Bob

I've only ever done 3 online petitions, and one of them was a
petition to attach japan to a bunch of chains and tow it to america
so that there would be less of a wait when we import video games.

I think that petition has an equal chance of working as do any
others out there.

(however now I'm motivated to find a "save the chamber" petition
just for fun)

Fox gave it three shots. Hell, it even put the premiere after the Super
Bowl. It has simply not been a mass success even by Fox standards. And it
is simply not the show that "The Simpsons" or "King of the Hill" or even
"Futurama" is.

I think some 'Family Guy' gags are splendid, though fail to match this
hyperbolic hilarity from your petition:

"We will not only be boycotting your stations, we will be boycotting
every product shown on those stations. These products include, but are
not limited to: Nyquil, Schick, Valvoline, Gold Bond, Subway Sandwiches,
Buick Motor Vehicles, Alka-Seltzer, Monistat 7, Diflucan, Kentucky Fried
Chicken (KFC), Heartguard, Frontline, any product on TimeLife.com,
Ranger Bass Boats, The Xtractor, any product made by MGM, 1-800-COLLECT,
Hunt's Manwich, any product made by Reeses', any product made by Walt
Disney, and Gevalia coffee and coffee makers." [1]

Now making me give up the 'Simpsons' is one thing, but i'll be damned if
i'm going to boycott my beloved Monistat 7...

Geeze - chill out fanboy. Family Guy has dodged more bullets than Batman
on a bad night in Gotham. I happen to agree that it's a pretty funny
show. I know UPN bought it at one point - maybe it still has a future
there. While you're at it, put it a good word for Futurama.

As for all of those other shows that have " been off the air for a good
long time" - how long did it take for Star Trek to come back on the
air? Just because they've been off the air a while doesn't make them any
less worthy of revival.

Besides, Uncle Milty in a dress is funny no matter what. And Howdy
Doody. I wanna see a petition for that.

k, let me clarify, it is not MY petition, it is just A petition, a
petition that just happen to feel strongly about.

UPN never bought the show, that was only a rumor, it has never been
cancelled by Fox, until now it looks like.

Fox hasn't given the show 3 chances, it started it after the Super
Bowl, and then neglected to air another episode for 3 months, it did
really really well, it was considered to be a "mega-hit" show, then
Fox got stupid and put it on Thursday nights, then Tuesdays, then
Wednesdays, then back to Thursdays, Family Guy has done very well in
the ratings in every time-slot Fox has thrown it in, often performing
better than it's lead-in. It has even done well in it's current
Thursday night time-slot against Survivor, WWF, and Friends, it
hasn't done great, but considering it's competition it has done a-ok.

You can see the rise and fall and rise and fall again of Family Guy
at http://fatpeter.tripod.com

PS. There will be a picket at Fox studios in California on Friday
afternoon, there is more info about that at

Doesn't matter whose petition it is. I'm sick of petitions for TV shows.

It's a TV show. Sometimes good shows get axed. "The Tick" got 8
episodes. "Max Headroom" got 13. Consider yourself lucky that "Family
Guy" got what it did.

Sometimes I wish that the "Star Trek" campaign had never worked. And
I love "Star Trek," I really do.

What's all the fuss about?
Sometimes in TV land, critics and viewers get what we deserve.
By ERIC DEGGANS, Times TV Critic

© St. Petersburg Times, published February 12, 2002

Sometimes in TV land, critics and viewers get what we deserve.
I don't get it.

Of course, TV takes such absurdist and craven turns these days -- Playboy
Playmates on Fear Factor, Victoria Secret's Fashion Show on ABC prime time --
that comprehending it all might be a sign of serious mental instability.

But there are some goings on in TV land that are even more mystifying than
usual:

<snip>

The fuss over Once and Again and Roswell

Among the network shows likely headed for cancellationville, ABC's blended
family drama Once and Again and UPN's teens-from-space adventure Roswell seem
to have the strongest fan bases around. (Another such show, Felicity, just
got the hook from the WB.)

And thanks to the magic of cyberspace, the "Save Once and Again" group is
trying to whip up support online with Web pages and e-mail to persuade the
networks to save the Sela Ward-Billy Campbell vehicle.

Already, the group has published an ad in the Hollywood Reporter begging ABC
executives to renew the show after it returns to new episodes at 10 p.m.
March 4. Fellow fans can surf to its Web site (www.geocities.com/saveoanda)
and see instructions for sending messages to ABC.

Likewise, Roswell lovers can head to www.crashdown.com for info on writing
UPN executives to plead their case. A similar effort prompted fans to send
thousands of bottles of Tabasco sauce to the WB during the show's first
season (its alien characters love the stuff), which prompted the network to
keep the show around until early 2001, when UPN picked it up.

But my advice this time around is a bit different.

Save your efforts. The viewers have voted.

ABC has kept Once and Again around since 1999, airing the show on Mondays,
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in a vain attempt to find viewership (as of
Feb. 3, it was ranked 97 among all prime time shows, below ABC's Thieves,
which was canceled long ago).

The show is amazing, but viewers clearly have not warmed to its complex
vision of two divorced parents who find love together, and they've had three
years to find it.

Roswell also debuted in 1999 to middling ratings on the WB, and despite
efforts to juice the show's sci-fi quotient and a move to UPN, it ranks at
132 among all shows.

Fact is, anyone who wants to see these series has seen them already, and all
the Tabasco sauce and industry ads in the world won't change that. Let's move
on; after all, we've got Greta's eyes and bin Laden's video to keep us
occupied.

>I love "Star Trek," I really do.

And the really sorry thing is that the Trek campaign never really
"worked". I know that fans think the world will end without "their" show
but the simple fact is that it's all economics. There was a lot more that
went into the decision to bring Trek back for a third season than the fan
letter campaign. The same is true for Paramount's decision to make movies
or Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The online petitions aren't worth the paper they're printed on. They are
ignored by the networks. A protest? Give me a break. It's a TV series
not the trial of the West Memphis 3.

Now that the campaign to save Roswell worked once (in theory) and a major
that was the mailing of packets of Tabasco to the network, the fans of a
series feel the need to pack something in with their heartfelt letter to
save their show. Fans of "The Tick" are including blue plastic spoons, for
example. What could "Family Guy" fans send along? Let's see, there's a
baby, Stewie, on the show. Maybe a dirty diaper will get those crazy FOX
executives to change their minds.

Family Guy might have done "okay" against it's competition but that's not
what any network is looking for. They want something that will be the show
to beat, not the cannon fodder for the night.

Oh, and I think maybe we should mail packets of monkey feces to NBC to get
them to bring back "B.J. and the Bear".

I intentionally left that one out. But since you brought it up, I think
"Buck Rogers" is due for a comeback. Erin Gray should be on a high enough
dosage to do a series again and Gil.... well, old Gil really needs
this. That salesman gig in Springfield just isn't working out, ya know?

Can someome explain me why sweeps is so important and if it is so
important why are ABC and CBS operating in give up mode?

I mean if I am an advertiser, don't I realize that FOX had high
ratings cause it aired the Super Bowl, or NBC hit big with the Winter
Olypmics. Am i so stupid as to believe that an episode of "Third
Watch" on a Monday in March is going to have anywhere the number of
viewers who watched the Olympics on a Monday in February.

I also seem to read all the time about advertisers who were promised
a ceratin a rating or share and when the networks fail to deliver,
that the advertiser gets free commercials to make up for the
shortfall.

It seems to me everybody knows sweeps is a stunt and has aleady
factored this in, so the quetion remains why have a sweeps period.

Is this what ABC and CBS are doing? Instead of burning up new shows
against the Olympics Behemoth, we get "Patch Adams" twice in 5 days,
and reruns of "...Raymond" and "Becker"

I'm not sure which is more amusing: the assertion that what's-his-name
Shanks has as many fan sites as Matt Damon or Brad Pitt (factually
ludicrous), the amazing depth of message board/fan site postings this writer
was able to glean from what she claimed was a cursory look (I think you're
correct about her fan girl status), or the idiotic and often shot-down
premise that catering to Internet fans is a good idea for ratings success or
even quality product. That's a very poorly written piece.

What do you mean it's real? You've got be kidding. Harry Knowles looks
like a serious journalist next to this frothing fangirl.

Let's recap, boys and girls - studios make shows. Audiences watch
shows. While studio wants audience to watch the shows, those shows belong
to the studio, not the audience. If an actor leaves, the studio does not
have the ability to chain the actor up and force them to stay. That's what
the legal departments are for.

It is sad to admit that I had written B.R.I.T.25.C on my binder in

But, then again, maybe I'm just like that guy in SF that went to the

Not if "Friends" and "Survivor" keep cleaning their clock.

However, there have been Fox execs who have said that they know that the
Mike Darnell-run reality specials that they run are like crack cocaine--they
hate to do it, but they can't stop because it gets them high (numbers). Has
anyone at Fox ever considered going cold turkey by canning Darnell and
hiring someone else for reality programming? Or is there the view that it
wouldn't really matter--they'd do the same things again?

Sweeps are important because they are the only times of the year that every
one of the 225-some television markets in the nation are measured by Nielsen
and because the local stations set their ad rates based on said sweeps.
They aren't that important for the networks, since they get their numbers
every week (and every morning for the metered markets), but the affiliates
demand that the networks give them competitive programming for sweeps.

This year, the February sweeps have lost their importance because--as proven
correct so far--NBC's Olympics coverage would be dominating everyone else.
I believe that NBC's pulled numbers in the neighborhood of 30 shares (give
or take a few numbers) every night since Friday and their combined numbers
for last night were 12 points above CBS, ABC and Fox *combined.* And it
looks like it's going to be that way every night until the Olympics are
over.

If truth be told, the networks would love to be rid of the sweeps--as would
any local news directors with a semblance of journalistic integrity still in
them, so they wouldn't have to run those "special reports" that the
consultants and their bosses force them to run every sweeps. But no one
seems to be able to come up with a feasible replacement, so we're still
stuck with them.

This was posted on the "other headlines" portion of the home page--the fact
that she loosely identifies the show as Fox when it isn't was enough to make
me uncomfortable. The "writer from Marin County" bio at the end with no
other credits completed the discomfort factor.

Yes, although it is true that MGM has a deal largely with Fox
stations to air the one-year-off weekly syndication package. But
otherwise, Fox has nothing to do with it... it's MGM, then Showtime,
and soon Sci-Fi.
>

No kidding. Hell, _I'm_ a writer from Marin County...

One other Salon note: Joyce Millman used to write TV articles for
Salon (not sure she does anymore). She was a professional TV critic
who _also_ happened to be a Buffy fangirl (and it showed, as she
wrote piece after piece about Buffy and Angel). Now, that was
interesting, because it forces you to ask this question: if you're a
pro who really, really likes a show, does that disqualify you from
writing about it?

By the way, my perspective as someone who considers "Stargate" the
best sci-fi show on TV right now: Daniel Jackson is part of the
ensemble. That's the real joke here. It's MacGyver's show; if there's
a second lead, it's Amanda Tapping's character Samantha Carter,
because she's the female lead/wish fulfillment for the female
viewers. Shanks comes in third, fourth if you groove on the character
of Teal'c, who's like a buff Mr. Spock. Fifth if you dig Don Davis of
X-Files and Twin Peaks fame as the gruff but loveable General
Hammond. SIXTH if you enjoy Teryl Rothery as the doctor. And come to
think of it, the guy whose name I don't know who just yells "incoming
traveler!" every week is pretty good...

Well, you see my point. The real joke here is that Shanks isn't even
playing a pivotal part. He's just an ensemble player, and when he got
tired of not being the second lead, he quit. Happens all the time.

Egad.

Journalistic credentials notwithstanding, I didn't have that many
problems with the article. But then, I'm a Stargate SG1 fan. I don't
participate in any fan sites, and much prefer Amanda Tapping to Michael
Shanks, but I agree with the fundamental point of the article: The focus
of the show has changed drastically. And, in the opinion of many
viewers, for the worse. I'll probably watch it through its final year,
but I'm disappointed that Shanks is leaving (though I understand his
motives).

Nothing against Marin County--it's been years since I visited San Francisco,
but I remember that it's pretty country. I just wanted more info about

And may I point out that "Family Guy" was a 20th-Century Fox show, meaning
that it already enjoyed a favored nations status at the network. If they're
going to cancel a semi-in-house production, they firmly believe that the
show has no future.

Those who like the show might have better luck getting Cartoon Network to
buy the reruns for their Adult Swim block--although the show's a lot more
vulgar than the rest of the block, you never know (and Mike Lazzo has said
that he would love to get "The Simpsons" on CN, although that will not
happen in any of our lifetimes).

BLACKLISTED -- Since the terror attacks, racial profiling has been at
the forefront of the Homeland Security debate. Many people of Middle
Eastern descent have been detained because of who they are, not what
they've done. There's a precedent for that which can be traced back to a
town called Oneonta, New York. In 1992, an elderly woman was attacked
there and all she could tell the police was the suspect's color. What

Published 6:00 a.m. PST Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Media giant Viacom announced Wednesday that it will
acquire KCAL-TV, the last major independent broadcast station in the Los
Angeles market, for $650 million.
Viacom, which owns CBS and its Los Angeles outlet KCBS-TV Channel 2, will buy
the station from Young Broadcasting Inc. The acquisition will give Viacom two
major stations in the nation's second largest television broadcast market and
will enable the company to operate under a duopoly. Three years ago, the
Federal Communications Commission eased its rules to allow a single entity to
own two television stations in a single market.

"Bringing KCAL into the Viacom family of television stations is a great
opportunity for us to expand significantly in an important growth area and
secure an 'oceanfront property' in one of the most attractive markets in the
country," Viacom President and Chief Operating Officer Mel Karmazin said in a
statement.

The acquisition is expected to close in mid-year 2002, and is subject to FCC
review and the expiration of antitrust waiting periods.

Viacom also owns the upstart UPN network and could switch KCAL to UPN when
UPN's current affiliation deal with Fox-owned KCOP Channel 13 ends next year.
Viacom owns 34 stations, with 15 of them UPN affiliates and the remainder CBS
units.

Young Broadcasting bought KCAL from the Walt Disney Co. in 1996. Disney sold
KCAL to comply with duopoly restrictions that existed at the time. Viacom
closed 81 cents higher at $43.16 on Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
Young Broadcasting closed up $1.45 at $19.50 on Tuesday on the Nasdaq Stock
Market.

Viacom has never owned KCOP. Chris-Craft/United, Viacom's former partner in
UPN, owned the station until last year, when it was sold to Fox.

Also, FCC regs only allow two TV stations with common ownership in a market.

While we're on the subject, is there any hope of ever seeing another
season of "Baby Blues" once the remaining unaired UPN episodes are
burned off on Cartoon Network?

Yes, it's sort of off topic, but everything seems to come back to television sooner or later...

Waylon Jennings, Country Singer, Dies at 64

February 13, 2002

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Waylon Jennings, who defined the outlaw
movement in country music, died Wednesday after a long
battle with diabetes-related health problems. He was 64.

Jennings spokeswoman Schatzie Hageman said Jennings died
peacefully at his home in Arizona.

Jennings, a singer, songwriter and guitarist, recorded 60
albums and had 16 No. 1 country singles in a career that
spanned five decades and began when he played bass for
Buddy Holly. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of
Fame in October.

He had been plagued with diabetes-related health problems
in recent years that made it difficult for him to walk. In
December, his left foot was amputated at a Phoenix
hospital.

Jennings and his wife, singer Jessi Colter, sold their home
in Nashville more than a year ago and moved to Chandler,
Ariz.

In 1959, his career was nearly cut short by tragedy soon
after it began.

He was scheduled to fly on the light plane that crashed and
killed Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper"
Richardson. Jennings gave up his seat on the plane to the
Richardson, who was ill and wanted to fly rather than
travel by bus with those left behind.

With pal Willie Nelson, Jennings performed duets like
"Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,"
"Luckenbach" and "Good Hearted Woman." Those 1970s songs
nurtured a progressive sound and restless spirit embraced
later by Travis Tritt, Charlie Daniels, Steve Earle and
others.

His resonant, authoritative voice also was used to narrate
the popular TV show "The Dukes of Hazzard." He sang its
theme song, which was a million seller.

"I aimed the narration at children and it made it work," he
said in a 1987 AP interview.

He traditionally wore a black cowboy hat and ebony attire
that accented his black beard and mustache. Often reclusive
when not on stage, he played earthy music with a spirited,
hard edge. Combined, Jennings had a well-defined image that
matched well with his history of battling record producers
to do music his way.

About his independence, he said: "There's always one more
way to do something -- your way."

Some of his album titles nourished his brash persona:
"Lonesome, On'ry and Mean," "I've Always Been Crazy,"
"Nashville Rebel," "Ladies Love Outlaws" and "Wanted: The
Outlaws."

He often refused to attend music awards shows on grounds
performers should not compete against each other. Despite
those sentiments, Jennings won two Grammy awards and four
Country Music Association awards. He did not attend his
induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame last year.

For about 10 years, he declined to appear on the Grand Ole
Opry because a full set of drums was forbidden at the time.
That rule was eventually dropped.

In 1992, he told the AP: "I've never compromised, and
people respect that."

Of his outlaw image, he said: "It was a good marketing
tool. In a way, I am that way. You start messing with my
music, I get mean. As long was you are honest and up front
with me, I will be the same with you. But I still do things
my way."

Born in Littlefield, Texas, Jennings became a radio disc
jockey at 14 and formed his own band not long afterward.

He and Holly were teen-age friends in Lubbock, Texas, and
Jennings was in Holly's band. Holly also produced Jennings'
first record.

"Mainly what I learned from Buddy was an attitude,"
Jennings said. "He loved music, and he taught me that it
shouldn't have any barriers to it."

By the early 1960s Jennings was playing regularly at a
nightclub in Phoenix. In 1963, he was signed by Herb
Alpert's A&M Records, then was signed by RCA in Nashville
shortly thereafter by Chet Atkins. Once in Nashville, he
and Cash became friends and roommates.

His hit records began in the mid-1960s and his heyday was
the mid-1970s.

His "Greatest Hits" album in 1979 sold 4 million -- a rare
accomplishment in country music for that era.

In the mid-1980s, he joined with Nelson, Johnny Cash and
Kris Kristofferson to form the quartet the Highwaymen,
which recorded together and did concert tours.

"I'd like to be remembered for my music -- not necessarily
by what people see when they see us -- but what they feel
when they talk about you," he said in 1984.

"Some people have their music. My music has me."

His
other hit singles included "I'm a Ramblin' Man," "Amanda,"
"Lucille," "I've Always Been Crazy" and "Rose in Paradise."

He made occasional forays into TV movies, including
"Stagecoach" and "Oklahoma City Dolls," plus the Sesame
Street movie "Follow That Bird" and the B-movie "Nashville
Rebel."

He has said he spent 21 years on drugs and had a
$1,500-a-day cocaine habit.

"I did more drugs than anybody you ever saw in your life,"
he told the Country Music Association's Close Up magazine
in 1994.

In 1977, he was arrested at a Nashville recording studio
and charged with conspiracy and possession of cocaine with
intent to distribute. The charges were later dismissed.

He kicked the habit in 1984 by leasing a house in Arizona
and going cold turkey, he said.

He and Colter, his fourth wife, married in 1969. They had
one son, Shooter.

Yes, I heard this on the radio while dressing this morning and
exploded. I was too busy today to post it... and in the meantime,
Comcast backed off from all the publicity:

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?
tmpl=story&cid=528&u=/ap/20020214/ap_on_hi_te/internet_privacy_23

And once Comcast backed off, it became less of a story.

I'm also sensitive about posting too much cable Internet stuff on TV
Barn. I've never discussed it it with Aaron, but I suspect he
wouldn't care for it if there was too much of it. After all, his site
is about TV, not the Internet, and I would never want to upset that
balance.

Having said that, this story clearly was worth posting had I been
able to do it earlier. Maybe I'll just add it to the "Other
Headlines" section, without comment.

Yes, a talking dog would do the trick.

Seth MacFarlane does the voice of Peter (the dad), Seth Green, (from
Austin Powers) does the voice of Chris (the son)

C'mon now, you kids have to admit that Family Guy is at least better

success promoting an annual "RC Cola and Moon Pie Festival," full of
tongue-in-cheek activities.

In 2000, Waylon and his wife Jessi Colter came down and were
named "RC King" and "Moon Pie Queen." He was in ill health even
then -- he didn't perform, simply appeared, was honored by the guest
emcee (a DJ from a Nashville radio station) with a teasing
proclamation, and acknowledged the fans. Even at that appearance,
you could tell how much the fans loved him. There was a huge crowd,
and many of them had driven out of their way to see Waylon Jennings.

I didn't get speak to him that day, although I got some good photos
for the Times-Gazette.

"Family Guy" doesn't have Chyler Leigh, which makes "That 80s Show" only
marginally better than "Family Guy."

After the Olympics, watch "Ed" instead.

I have no problem with posting as many cable Internet headlines as
you want (just no redundant links, please; one link per topic). I
like to keep the left hand side as accessible as possible, i.e.,
limited to topics of general interest. But the ideal sidebar to me
has 100 links to 100 different topics.

Incidentally, anybody who's reading this and wants to contribute
headlines -- let me know and I'll add you to the permission list.

E! to broadcast U.K.'s Bafta awards

Show to reach worldwide audience for first time

LONDON -- The British Academy Film Awards will be broadcast outside the
U.K. for the first time this year, including on E! Entertainment in the
U.S.

The U.K.'s answer to the Oscars, popularly known as the Baftas, go out
Feb. 24 from the Odeon Leicester Square theater in London's
entertainment district.

While the deal with E! is a milestone for the event, the show's
producer-distributor Endemol UK had been hoping for one of the major
networks in the U.S.

Endemol UK director of sales Peter Vandenbussch told Daily Variety that
E! was the "right network at this stage" because it can deliver not only
a conventional audience but also viewers who work in the industry.

In Britain, the show will air on BBC1, and will again be hosted by
comedian-thesp Stephen Fry.

Other broadcasters that have picked up the Baftas are ABC in Australia,
Sony Entertainment in India, Phoenix Television in China, Middle Eastern
satcaster Orbit, Cinenova for the Benelux territories, TV2 in Denmark,
Indosiar in Indonesia and VPS Entertainment in Malaysia.

Endemol said the program had a potential audience of more than one
billion and will become the most widely distributed film awards in the
world after the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

Sayeth Variety:

KABUL -- Afghanistan's interim government has approved private
ownership of television channels and radio stations for the first
time in the country's history.

"There will by no (state) monopoly of television and radio," Culture
Minister Raheen Makhdoom said Wednesday. "Any Afghan citizen has the
right to own a private television or radio station, but not
foreigners."

The minister said the law approving private broadcasting, passed by
the government Saturday, placed no restrictions on operators other
than that they stay within the law.

"Freedom will be respected," he said. "If they don't break common law
and security, and there is no defamation, and nothing is broadcast
against religions, there will be no limitations."

Previously, newspapers were the only privately owned media.

Not to take this further off-topic, but this is actually a pretty fun
event. The mood is probably best symbolized by the "synchronized
wading" event, which is really just some sort of skit performed by
people standing in a kiddie pool. The event has grown every year,
and there are now thousands upon thousands attending and scores of
various craft and carnival vendors.

The Learning Channel airs a seven hour marathon of their "A Dating

PBS film crew).

When everyone's chowing down chocolates, PBS Frontline (check local
listings) tries to get the skinny on "Fat."

ABC presents "A Charlie Brown Valentine" (8 PM), the first new
primetime cartoon outing for the round headed kid since 1993. Chuck
finally gets up the nerve to ask the red haired girl to a dance, and
somehow winds up in the two dates episode of "Family Ties."

Meanwhile, FOX's "Family Guy" (8 PM) is ... still on.

Comedy Central goes mysteriously highbrow with the Oscar Wilde
comedy "An Ideal Husband" (8 PM) with Rupert Everett playing it
straight, sort of.

MTV also suddenly aiming for the smart kids presents "Global Forum
with Colin Powell" (8 PM), a one hour international Q & A session
with the man many suggest will be the Veep before Bush's term is
over.

USA Network has Drew Barrymore's almost successful Return to high
school comedy "Never Been Kissed" (8 PM).

Down continues to be smacked by the WWF on UPN (8 PM) and Stone Cold
Steve Austin, and RVD both prep for another big PPV event and still
try and smell what the Rock, well, you know...

Up for romance? Try anything but FOX's "Temptation Island 2" (9 PM).

Vagina, Vagina, Vagina. That said, HBO airs Eve Ensler's "The Vagina
Monologues" (9:30 PM) on V-Day, the day the stage show traditionally
sets aside to raise money for women's charities.

Bravo offers "For One Night Only ... Tom Jones" (10 PM) with the
Welsh Wizard sweating to the oldies on tape from London.

ABC airs a fourth night of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" (10 PM)
still all gimmicked up, tonight with clueless couples arguing over
whether it's "cream cheese."

Dave has Calista Flockhart and Incubus, Jay Leno has Denzel
Washington and Sheryl Crow.
Tie.

WE, THE PEOPLE OF COLOR, MUST BOYCOTT NBC

Dateline: February 11, 2002 ... New York, NY Contact Name: Mr. Don
Williams, The People's Network News Contact Phone: (212) 690-9971 Web

NEW YORK, NY - February 11, 2002 - We, the people of color Are
outraged that there has been absolutely no attention given to the
fact that we represent less than 20% of the workforce at the
television networks. In addition, these few minorities endure, and
continue to endure, racial, gender, wage and advancement
discrimination, and this too has been ignored. The National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the
United States Congress has been investigating the lack of diversity
in the media and specifically the Television Networks for two years
now. The primary focus of their investigation has been on the lack
of minorities in front of and behind the cameras.

On January 5, 2000, the NAACP and the National Broadcasting Company
(NBC) signed an agreement that was supposed to be the start of a more
inclusive environment for minorities at NBC. Since this agreement has
been signed the following events have taken place.

* On May 12th, 2000, Six (6) Federal discrimination lawsuits were
filed against NBC by its employees. These suits were based on race
and gender. On this date, the New York Times, the Daily News and the
New York Post announced the lawsuits. In their articles they
described the relationship of the Klu Klux Klan to the Conan O'Brien
Show. Thirty Days later, three of the plaintiffs were forced to walk
past a set of KKK robes and hoods. These robes and hoods hung outside
the Conan O'Brien studios for three days. They were not used for any
comedy skits or rehearsals related to any show.

* On November 12, 2000 NBC held their annual teleconference of its
owned and operated stations. Their station from Miami chose to
allow a white employee to appear in black face to make fun of the
ballot counting in Florida. This happened in front of all of the NBC
executive including CEO Bob Wright and Diversity Vice President Paula
Madison. The following morning, Mr. Wright's office was contacted by
both viewers and employees expressing their disgust and how offended
they were by this skit. Mr. Wright's response was that the
gentleman's face was not black, but indeed "purple."

* On December 18, 2000 an African American employee, filed charges of
discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission based
on race, gender and age discrimination. After receiving her right to
sue letter from EEOC, eight months later, she represents the 8th
Federal discrimination lawsuit against NBC.

* On June 21, 2001, an African American employee found a hangman's
noose hanging up in his work area. The noose hung there for over two
weeks. His name was taped to the noose and it remained for an
additional 3 days. The matter of the noose was brought to the
attention of John Rivera, chairman of the National Association of
Broadcast Employees and Technicians' diversity committee (NABET Local
#11). Mr. Rivera contacted the President of the Union, Mr. Myers, who
contacted the Labor Relations department for NBC. An investigation,
headed by NBC Management, was supposedly conducted. Yet, to date,
there has been no resolution to the matter, nor have any results of
the invitation been communicated to Mr. Myers or NABET Local 11.

* On July 6th 2001, yet another discrimination lawsuit was filed
against NBC based on race and gender, brining the total number of
Federal Discrimination lawsuits against NBC to seven.

Since the signing of the historic agreement between NAACP and NBC,
over 300 counts of discrimination have been filed in Federal Court.
These instances have taken place over the past 15 years demonstrating
how institutionalized and serious discrimination is at NBC. We can
only estimate the number of incidents that have gone unreported.

Attempts have been made to enforce NBC's Human Resources policies to
remedy these problems. All attempts were met with NBC's adamant
unwillingness to take action to resolve its severe discriminatory
behavior towards its employees of color.

We, the few minorities employed at a major broadcast network want to
make everyone aware of the inequity and offensive behavior a person
of color endures once they are employed at one of the major
television networks. Even in the presence of the NAACP agreement, NBC
continues to have a poor record on diversity. Believing it is above
the law, NBC continues to ignore all repeated requests to meet and
discuss resolution of its unlawful behavior.

If you are interested in learning more about these acts of
discrimination by NBC and the lawsuits which resulted, please visit
The People's Network News at http://www.tpnn.com

We hope you join us in our fight for equity and enforcing our rights
as Americans, because no one should have to endure this type of
behavior, ever, much less in our modern society. Therefore, we the
people of color must take a stand and...

... must boycott NBC

Isn't synchronized wading going to be a part of the next Summer
Olympic Games?

After all, I think that while it isn't in the Olympics - yet - the
IOC actually recognizes ballroom dancing as a "sport." Or maybe it's
chess, I can't remember. Heck, just have a little patience and I'm
sure the IOC will eventually add your favorite activity.

(Proactive hate mail disclaimer: I have nothing against wading,
ballroom dancing, bridge or chess. But they are not sports.)

Well, ballroom dancing is as much a "sport" as figure skating. If we're
going to keep the obviously biased judging practices of one in the Winter
Olympics, we might as well put the other into the Summer Olympics.

As soon as that US Olympic Pinball Team forms, I'll be dropping this dead
end writing career and going for the gold. I wonder if Home Depot will
sponsor me in my quest for Olympic glory?

Pinball! Yes! Glad to know I'm not the only Luddite on this list.
