ABC picked it up as of September 1985, for season 8. Dixie Carter soemhow
turned into Mary Ann Mobley. And the date episode was actually episode 187
out of 189 so things were really stretching it at that point.

The reruns you might remember were on NBC weekdays from April 1982 to
December 1983 and from July to September 1984.

Well, I'd caught Police Academy 2 on The Movie Channel and forgotten that
Bobcat was originally a gangleader, before joining the force over the course

From AP:

<<John Thaw, TV's Inspector Morse, Dies
Thu Feb 21, 9:03 PM ET By AUDREY WOODS,
Associated Press Writer

LONDON (AP) - Actor John Thaw, known to millions of TV viewers worldwide as
the grumpy, music-loving detective in "Inspector Morse," died Thursday at 60
after a battle with throat cancer.

"John died with his family around him" at home, said Thaw's wife of 29 years,
actress Sheila Hancock.

Thaw was a respected stage actor and had been a leading television actor for
many years. But was he was indelibly identified with "Inspector Morse" after
creating a complex character whose flaws appealed to fans as much as his
better qualities.

The highly praised British series began in 1985 and lasted for 33 two-hour
episodes that aired over 15 years. "Inspector Morse" had a 13-year run in the
United States on PBS' "Mystery!" series, beginning in 1988, and was shown in
many other countries.>>

Also, apparently New Line is now developing a new "Twilight Zone"

But this new pilot is destined for... UPN!

Yup. I think CBS is figuring out that UPN's long term audience falls a

Though it took CNN.com about 3 hours to post the story from the time I

Though, they're doing better that Washingtonpost.com, which as of this

I just to happen to have a free subscription to "Response" magazine, "The
Voice of the Electronic Retailing Association."

They're doing (what I consider) an interesting multi-part series on "The
Johnny Carson Collection." Here's a quote from part one :

(Johnny Carson) finally said, ‘You can do this, but you have to give people
the best quality.’ He wanted happy customers — first-class tapes and
top-notch customer service.”

Roald Dahl wrote the script for tonight's ABC "Bond Picture

CNN takes a look at "preemies" with "Babies on the Brink" (8

Kurt Russell Kevin Costner and Courtney Cox allegedly star in
the HBO Premiere of the bomb "3000 Miles to Graceland," (8 PM), quite
possibly the worst Elvis movie of 2001.

HBO showed 2 episodes of "Six Feet Under" this past
Wednesday, so they can start the new season sooner. If you missed
taping the early episode "The Trip," you can catch both repeats on
HBO Plus, starting at (10 PM).

While it's nice to have Martin Short's absurd "Primetime
Glick" (10 PM) back on Comedy Central for a second season, how were
they able to convince him that Saturday nights (not live) was a
better timeslot than after "South Park," (currently the home to Dave
Attel's "Insomniac," a smarter version of the Howard Stern show.) Tom
"Hank" and Ben Stiller put up with Glick tonight.

HBO presents "Jamie Foxx: I Might Need Security" (10:15 PM),
the comedian's attempt to follow in the footsteps of Eddie Murphy.
His wacky jokes about AIDS in South Africa, are always a step in that
direction.

HBO Boxing (11:15 PM) offers Bantam & Super Bantamweight

I have a 4-tape set of Carson's best. 3 tapes cover each decade of
his career and the 4th is the final show.

It's a great tape set that I pull out every once in a while, when I
need a good laugh.

The two clips that spring to mind is the infamous Ed Ames hatchet
throwing trick (2nd longest laugh in TV history?) and Buddy Hackett
talking about his new boat. Those are both on tape 1, IIRC.

If you're a Carson fan, you should get them, IMHO.

Simply Huge: Martin Short Is a Mighty Manic 'Glick'

   By Tom Shales
   Washington Post Staff Writer
   Saturday, February 23, 2002; Page C01

When in the course of human events -- oh, the heck with human events
right now, and the same for subhuman events, though Heaven knows
   there's plenty of them.

   Let's talk instead about Jiminy's Glick -- I mean Jiminy Glick. Let's
talk about Jiminy Glick's enormous place in the annals of hilarity, in
the annals of insanity, in the annals of just about everything.
Because if Jiminy Glick is anything, he is annal retentive. [Oh,
   brother -- Ed.]

Who is Jiminy Glick, you ask? Well, do you? Because if you ask that,
then you missed the first season of "Primetime Glick," which is Mr.
Glick's merry and madcap interview program on the Comedy Central cable
channel. But lucky, lucky, lucky you (and even luckier Mr. Glick),
because the show has been renewed, and a second season begins tonight
   at 10.

Not only is Glick back but so is Michael McKean as Adrien Van
Voorhees, his epicene harp-playing bandleader, plus guest stars so
famous you wonder whether you are actually watching cable. We give you
advance warning of Glick's return so that you can program the VCR, or
set the TiVo, or buy a larger-screen television set, or make whatever
preparations are necessary to welcome him back into your embrace --
although embracing Mr. Glick is a neat trick since he is as enormous
as his places in all those annals and is usually busy embracing
himself anyway. You have to get in line.

Jiminy Glick is the insanely inspired comic creation of the great
Martin Short, one of the most versatile, gifted and seemingly
inebriated comic actors in the whole slap-happy history of television.
Short burst upon the scene as a member of the renowned "SCTV" comedy
troupe, and then in 1984 he burst upon the scene again as, briefly,
one of the "Saturday Night Live" players. But then he also burst upon
the scene playing small roles that he made huge in movie after movie
   after movie.

Eventually the scene wearied from so frequently being burst upon, but
Short bursts eternal. He is, mercifully, tireless. Even flopping as a
daytime talk-show host didn't slow him down ormuffle his luster. His
luster is unmuffleable. Age cannot wither nor custom stale his
   infinite infinity.

In Glick guise, he's a multi-chinned and fabulously fatuous talk-show
host who manages almost always to insult and embarrass his celebrity
guests. And guests don't get much more celebrated than the first of
Glick's new-season crop: Tom Hanks, one of the biggest box-office
stars and best actors in all of moviedom. And yes, he has made a
couple of dumb movies. That's why they call it moviedom. [Ay, caramba!
   -- Ed.]

"Primetime Glick" is partly or largely improvised, and few guests have
been able to keep pace with Short (as Glick) and his butterfly
attention span, manic or maniac mood swings and insistence on changing
the subject -- to himself -- as often as possible. Hanks is a joy to
watch, partly because he finds Short a joy to watch, and to match wits
with, in a five-minute segment of outrageous Tomfoolery and
   Hanksy-panksy.

"Here's -- Tom Hank! [sic]" Glick says grandly as Hanks wafts in from
the wings. As he does with most of his guests, Glick finds it
necessary to smack Hanks repeatedly on the leg with a rolled-up
script. He not only gets Hanks's name wrong, he also mistakenly refers
to the Hanks blockbuster movie "Cast Away" as "Rescue Me." (Later in
the show, he mistakenly says guest Ben Stiller's father, Jerry
Stiller, co-stars on "Queer as Folk" instead of the correct show,
   "King of Queens.")

"Everyone in the world compares me to you," Glick tells Hanks after
hawking up a piece of caramel corn that, like so many other objects,
has become lodged in the Glick windpipe. Hanks shocks Glick by
retrieving a regurgitated morsel from the cheap carpeting and
swallowing same -- "same" meaning the corn, not the carpet. Glick
barely asks Hanks a single question about anything, instead drifting
off into a reverie about "late at night, when Mr. Needy arrives" and
"riding my lady to Loveville." Inside sources say, incidentally, that
on this season'sshows we will meet wife Dixie and even their four
"strapping" sons, thus confounding we Glick fans who assumed the
family he's always babbling about was entirely imaginary and that
instead he lived in an efficiency apartment and microwaved Lean
Cuisines for dinner every night. Six or seven of 'em, that is.

Hanks is wonderful, while Stiller, not the swiftest bunny in the
bunch, appears alternately confounded and dumbfounded by his host's
machinations, not to mention expectorations. Glick tactlessly recalls
Stiller's dismal stint on "SNL" in 1989: "You went out there . . . and
just bombed, and bored people so desperately it made people feel like
   maybe you shouldn't hang around."

There's more -- oh, so much more! -- but it demands (or maybe begs) to
be seen for itself. "Primetime Glick" is the epitome of hilarity, a
deceptively ramshackle showbiz sendup with heroically accurate aim.
Glick gets everything wrong; Short gets everything right. He starts at
perfect and keeps ascending, and not even the sky is the limit. [Holy
moly, how much is Short paying this guy? -- Ed.]

We met his wife Dixie -- played by Jan Hooks of SNL and "Designing
Women" -- several times last year, though we never saw the sons that
I can recall. Odd that Shales would have missed that.

I just got the DVD collection after Christmas. A Canadian company
was selling them in Dutch auctions on eBay.

The poorest part of the collection was the "behind the scenes"
footage. It looked like it was tossed together as an afterthought.

Also -- you would have thought Johnny would have seen to it that
the DVDs would have had closed captioning for the hearing impaired.

There's lots more good material to be extracted out of those
tapes buried in the "vault".

The site http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com is selling the DVD collection
for $45.60 plus shipping.

If I can offer one caveat about the collection, and I speak for the
VHS version (I havent seen the DVD)...

It does not contain the entire final show. About 10 minutes are
deleted because Carson Productions did not want to pay the talent/
use fees for an extended musical highlights segment and a couple of
other clips.

What you do see on the tape of the last show is a shot of Carson
after he says good night which lasts about 20 seconds longer than
when the show was televised... Johnny can be seen visibly becoming,
let's just say, emotional. Very interesting that it's on the tape,
but did not air that way in 92.

Funny, that's one of the reasons I was looking into the set in the first
place--the NBC affiliate in Grand Rapids (where I was living at the time)
actually dumped out of the show about 5 seconds after Johnny said 'good
night' and ran a 30 second promo for their weather forecasting, before
jumping back to the feed just in time to catch the credits.

Thanks for the mostly positive reviews--guess I know where part of my tax
refund is going...^_^

Last week on FOX's "Boston Public" (8 PM), they killed seven
students die, had a student punch a teacher who then punched back
equally, and had Fyvush Finkel claim he was reincarnated from George
Washington.... Tonight, they say a variation of the word "Nigerian" a
lot. The show claims it's one of the most controversial, yet publicly
accepted epithets in the English language, and one of the worst words
one can use to bully a fellow student in school. I would argue that a
much more common taunt is the equally offensive word "faggot," which
is accepted to belittle regardless of race, or sexual orientation.

That's right, as promised, it's my most controversial,
shocking, provocative column ever. I expect big ratings from this.

Ray and Debra imitate Frank and Marie and vice versa on CBS

Witches Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are doing' it for

A bridge from Europe to Africa? A tunnel through the Straits

PBS "Masterpiece Theatre" (9 PM, check listings) presents

FOX's "Ally McBeal" (9 PM) submits her alleged daughter to a

trust the show's writers.)

Lifetime's "Fear No More: Stop Violence Against Women" (10

Comedy Central's weak tribute to the "Heroes of Black Comedy"

HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" (10 PM) investigates

From today's NYT article about Oxygen (emphasis added):
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/02/25/business/media/25OXYG.html

Oxygen is developing pilots for its own comedy hour, but its most
innovative step may be in advertising. Every show carries a "stripe"
a black ribbon of subtitles at the bottom of the screen.
Some are arch comments or explanations. (A dumb-blonde version of the
goddess Aphrodite appears on "Xena." Caption: "The actress graduated
from Brown University.") Others are messages from advertisers and
sponsors. ***Ms. Laybourne said Oxygen would apply for a patent on
its stripe.***

Well, considering all the other dumb patents that the government has
granted, they'll probably get it. More's the pity. I think the stripe
is one of the most annoying things I have ever seen on any network.
The alledgedly funny comments are simply distracting, and have on at
least one occasion driven me away from a movie that I would otherwise
have watched.

But then again, I'm a guy, so I guess they don't care what I think.

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" had a main character killed off long before

LA Law had "Chaney" dead in the pilot/first episode.

"Chaney" was the mysterious partner whose name was never
removed from the firm's title "McKenzie-Brackman-Chaney"
and all of the other incarnations throughout.

This is radio-related, but we sometimes wander off into that area
here, so...

http://msn.espn.go.com/mlb/news/2002/0225/1340301.html
http://www.freep.com/sports/tigers/tigers25_20020225.htm

LAKELAND, Fla. - Hall of Fame announcer Ernie Harwell, whose voice
has been synonymous with the Detroit Tigers for more than four
decades, will leave the booth after this season.

``I love my job. I love baseball. I enjoy being with the players,''
he said at a news conference Monday. ``It really has come time for me
to say one more year and then retirement.''

The Tigers announced last month that Harwell would be back this
season to call games for his 42nd year with the Tigers and his 55th
year in the majors.

[snip]

I don't know how many people will appreciate it, but this is huge
news here in Detroit. Harwell has been broadcasting Tiger games since
before I was born. A previous regime (under previous owner Tom
Monaghan) forced Harwell out in the early 90's and was greeted by a
public backlash that ended up in Harwell's return.

Tiger baseball won't be the same without him, but since he's leaving
on his own terms, I can only wish him well. And listen to all the
games I can this season.

IIRC, the short-lived CBS series "WIOU", set at a fictional struggling UHF
TV station in Chicago, had a news anchor die on the set during a newscast
in the first episode.

What about the stripe on TNN? I was watching a little ST:TNG this
weekend, but had to turn it off after a few minutes because of that
annoying black bar. I realized they don't actually cover any of the
picture with it, but instead shrink the height to make it fit. It's a
small but percptible change. It's very annoying to watch a show where
nothing looks physically normal.

Interesting thing about the Ultimate Carson Collection DVDs- well, at
least my set- on one of the DVDs, I believe it was the best of the
80's and 90's, the left and right audio channels were reversed.

The makers of the DVD decided to get all fancy and separate the audio
so that Ed would be on the left and the band would be on the right
during the monologue clips, but then somewhere along the line the
audio was reversed and now Ed is guffawing from the right and Doc and
the band are playing from the left.

It's unfortunate because the makers of the DVD were trying to improve
on the source material (I don't remember Ed's mike being keyed to the
left speaker, do you?) and in the process it kind of hosed things up.

Anybody else notice this? I'm curious to see if it's been fixed in
later pressings (I ordered the moment they were available.)

Obviously it's not about 5.1 THX mastered sound, it's about the
comedy and this is a great set. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it
to anyone.

On "Alias", Sydney's boyfriend didn't make it past the first episode, did he?

But technically, if they're a "main character" for the series, wouldn't they
need to reappear posthumously throughout the series. So with out my TV
encyclopedia handy, I'm sure someone can name the rancid 80's or early 90's
sitcom with a video will as it's primary plot.

Also, someone else can tell if "My Mother the Car" fits the category?

CBC's Canada-U.S. Olympic hockey final viewership peaked at 10.6
million

By John McKay

TORONTO (CP) -- A record-busting 8.7 million Canadians were witness
to Olympics history Sunday, watching the Canadian men's hockey team
snatch gold from the United States in Salt Lake City.

The television audience actually peaked at 10.6 million, the CBC
said Monday.

"It's a wonderful day for Canadians, it's a wonderful day for
Canadian hockey, it's a wonderful day for the CBC," boasted Slawko
Klymkiw, CBC-TV's chief programmer.

Klymkiw noted that the numbers from Nielsen Media Research don't
even count the thousands upon thousands of Canadians who watched in bars
and restaurants, and he declined to even guess what the real number
was.

"I think it's higher, I dunno."

It was a collective pause unlike any in recent memory.
From coast to coast, the streets were uncharacteristically quiet as
Canadians -- including millions who don't normally watch hockey --
hunkered down in front of their television sets for the critical game.
In shopping malls, stores had radios and televisions tuned to the
game, and shoppers cheered every score by the Canadian team. And after
the Canadians won 5-2, people spilled into the streets, waving the Maple
Leaf, laughing and celebrating.

The 8.7 million figure easily eclipses what's believed to be the
previous ratings winner in Canada -- the March 1998 Academy Awards
ceremony.

CTV spokesman Mike Cosentino says there were 6.6 million viewers for
the Oscars that year, when Titanic won 11 trophies and Jack Nicholson
and Helen Hunt took the top acting awards for As Good As It Gets.

CBC says that prior to Sunday, its highest-rated sports show was
Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup between the New York Rangers and the
Vancouver Canucks, which attracted an average of 4.97 million viewers.
South of the border, the Salt Lake City contest was the
highest-rated hockey game -- Olympics or NHL -- on U.S. TV since the
1980 Lake Placid Games.

NBC's live broadcast Sunday afternoon drew a 10.7 national rating,
meaning 10.7 per cent of TV homes tuned in. About 38 million people
watched at least part of the game.

That's the biggest network audience in at least 22 years for a game
involving NHL players.

Although CBC officials have often said they aren't in the business
for ratings, Klymkiw was clearly delighted by the numbers. He said the
closing ceremonies Sunday night surpassed four million in prime time.
And unlike most cross-border programming, the CBC did not override
the incoming American signal on cable and satellite so that Canadian
viewers did have the option of watching alternative coverage from NBC,
the U.S. host broadcaster.

NBC, incidentally, did have commercial breaks during the game -- and
at times had ads running when there was game action -- while CBC limited
its ads to between periods and during pre- and post-game telecasts.

Klymkiw said the CBC used the event as part of its high-impact
strategy, running promotions during the game for upcoming CBC telecasts,
including the Trudeau mini-series and the new detective drama Tom
Stone.

"This is how we're going to demarcate this network and I can't be
happier."

CBC's ratings climbed steadily throughout the Games as competition
came down to the crunch and the unscheduled controversies -- the skating
vote, Wayne Gretzky's tantrum and the doping scandal -- escalated.
The Games opening ceremony netted 2.9 million viewers, climbing to
3.9 million for the Jamie Sale and David Pelletier skate, and for the
Canada-Czech Republic men's game last Monday.

The Wednesday men's quarter final between Canada and Finland brought
in 4.6 million pairs of eyeballs, peaking at a record 5.2 million.
Then it was the women's turn. Their gold medal game against the U.S.
drew 4.54 million, peaking at 6.2 million, with 5.2 million watching the
women's medal ceremony.

Friday afternoon's Canada-Belarus semi-final brought in an average
2.93 million, but it was a work day.

CBC says Nielsen breaks down programming into half-hour blocks -- in
the case of the Sunday game there were five of them. Five sets of
ratings are then added and divided by five. The peak number is that of
the highest-rated half-hour.

A nitpick from an "L.A. Law" fan: Norm Chaney's name was retained in
the firm name for the show's first six seasons. Then, it was dropped
in season seven when the firm got the unwieldy name of "McKenzie,

AB is right that there is very little discussion of Bernard Goldberg's

Anyway, Bernie's book was written to expose liberal bias in the media,
but many of his less comic anecdotes either doesn't support that thesis,
or even counters the thesis.

If you dig through "Daily Howler" you'll find many many cases of where
the media and journalist appear to have fallen down on the jobs as
fact-checkers, which is worse a crime than exibiting bias.

An aside that we may have even already talked about here -- I don't remember.

The "Alias" premiere was commercial-free and sponsored by Nokia. In
that pilot, the main character's Nokia cellphone -- and its
distinctive Nokia ringtone! -- was a key element of the plot at a few
different points. And has continued to be, to some degree, as the
series goes on.

Hey, if this is what they need to do to let me keep my TiVo, I'll take it. :-)

Actually I'm embarrassed I forgot about this one till now. "Due
South." Gordon Pinsent's Robert Fraser character was killed in the first
scene of the first episode, then came back as a ghost in a few episodes
later that season, a few the next, and then became a regular the last two
(half-length) seasons.

One of the few cases where a character's role expanded after his
death.

Who is in charge at dcp? First 'The Chamber' (which I kinda like

I thought dcp did family oriented shows and not sensationalistic

Is it a "given" that the character appear -- in ghost form or
reincarnated in some way? I was thinking of "Under Suspicion" (1994,
CBS) which killed off two of its lead characters in the two-hour
premiere. Frank Fusco continued to be a very real entity in the lives
of his coworkers even though he didn't come back. Neither did Eriq La
Salle's character of "LeBlanc" who also died, leaving his partner
guilt-ridden.

A palpable talent connection between "Under Suspicion" and "ER". Eriq
la Salle, Paul McCrane, Michael Beach.

Comedy Central to Re-Broadcast First Season of Critically Acclaimed ABC
Comedy Series 'The Job,' Starring Denis Leary

Network to Program 'The Job' Following 'The Daily Show With Jon Stewart' From
March 4-7, Followed by Two-Hour Marathon March 10

Unusual Collaboration Made Possible By Leary's Longstanding Relationship With
Comedy Central

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Comedy Central will broadcast the
six-episode first season of the critically acclaimed ABC Television Network
comedy series ``The Job,'' starring Denis Leary as New York City detective
Mike McNeil, it was announced today by Bill Hilary, executive vice president
and general manager, Comedy Central. From Monday, March 4 thru Thursday,
March 7, Comedy Central will air an episode of ``The Job'' at 11:30 pm ET/PT,
following the Emmy Award-winning ``The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.'' On
Sunday, March 10, Comedy Central will broadcast a four-episode, two-hour
``Job'' marathon from 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET/PT, hosted by ``The Job'' cast
members Denis Leary, Lenny Clarke and Adam Ferrara.``

"This is an interesting, low-risk experiment for us to see how well an
on-brand, off-network comedy/drama series like 'The Job' will perform on
Comedy Central since it is a format we are developing for the future,'' said
Bill Hilary, executive vice president and general manager, Comedy Central.
``Denis Leary, with whom we have worked on a number of occasions in the past,
possesses exactly the kind of edgy comic sensibility our audience has come to
expect from us.''

``We were in a meeting with ABC, brainstorming ways to seek added exposure
for 'The Job,' and the idea of a second broadcast window came up,'' said
Justin Falvey, co-head of DreamWorks Television. ``Jim Serpico (Denis Leary's
producing partner and an executive producer of ''The Job``) suggested Comedy
Central, and ABC graciously agreed to allow us to set up this unusual but
exciting promotional opportunity.''

``Denis and I have enjoyed a relationship with Comedy Central for more than
10 years, and we didn't have to think twice about where to take this,'' said
Jim Serpico, executive producer of ``The Job'' and a principal in Apostle,
one of the show's production companies. ``The Comedy Central run gives us the
chance to reach viewers who may not have had the opportunity to see 'The Job'
in its very competitive timeslot opposite 'The West Wing.'''

In ``The Job,'' Denis Leary stars as Detective Mike McNeil, a decorated NYC
detective whose toughest assignment is himself. His unconventional approach
to fighting crime makes him a great cop but takes a toll on his personal
life. Also starring are Lenny Clarke as Frank Harrigan, Diane Farr as Jan
Fendrich, Adam Ferrara as Tommy Manetti, Bill Nunn as Pip Phillips and John
Ortiz as Ruben Sommariba. Guest starring are Keith David as Lt. Williams,
Julian Acosta as Al, Karyn Parsons as Toni and Wendy Makkena as Karen McNeil.

Following is the Comedy Central broadcast schedule for ``The Job'' --Monday,
March 4, 11:30 pm ET/PT -- The Pilot: Cutting-edge actor-comedian Denis Leary
(``The Thomas Crown Affair,'' ``The Ref'') stars in the single-camera,
half-hour comedy series shot entirely on location in New York and New Jersey.
The program unites Leary with Emmy Award-winning writer Peter Tolan (``The
Larry Sanders Show''). They created a new comedy series about Mike McNeil
(Leary), a tough New York City detective whose roughest assignment is
himself. He's struggling to balance a challenging personal life with a job
that leaves him wondering, on a daily basis, if he is the last sane person in
New York. His unconventional approach to his job makes him a great cop, even
on the most trying days. The only thing he can't figure out is why, if he's
the only sane guy around, everyone's always looking at him like he's crazy.
``The Job'' was written by Denis Leary & Peter Tolan, and directed by Dean
Parisot.

Tuesday, March 5, 11:30 pm ET/PT -- 'Foot': A bag with a severed foot inside
is found in front of a doorman building, prompting a visit to some mob
contacts -- and a few practical jokes. McNeil secretly does a background
check on Jan's new boyfriend, and McNeil's girlfriend, Toni, needs help after
she is groped on the subway. 'Foot' was written by Daphne Pollon and directed
by Tucker Gates.

Wednesday, March 6, 11:30 pm ET/PT -- 'Massage': When McNeil is told to check
out a massage parlor, he feels the need to sample the services to see if it's
legit, as do the other men in the precinct. Meantime, Jan's new arrest, a
homeless man, turns out to be a high school classmate; and a grateful senior
citizen has designs on Ruben. 'Massage' was written by Peter Tolan & Denis
Leary, and directed by Tucker Gates.

Thursday, March 7, 11:30 pm ET/PT -- 'Bathroom': All hell breaks lose when
Frank loses a perp inside the precinct. While on his way to the bathroom in
desperate need of relief, McNeil finds the perp but becomes his hostage at
gunpoint. Will McNeil get out in time to go to his marriage counseling
session? Meantime, Ruben and Al are sent on a mysterious mission. 'Bathroom'
was written by Peter Tolan and Denis Leary, and directed by Tucker Gates.

Sunday, March 10, 8:00 pm ET/PT -- 'Elizabeth': Actress and model Elizabeth
Hurley is being harassed and all the guys in the precinct want to be assigned
to her case. McNeil wins out in more ways than one -- he heads up the
investigation and Elizabeth asks him out. Meantime, millionaire mogul Donald
Trump makes a cameo appearance during McNeil's date, and Pip's wife, Adinah,
makes a stand against McNeil. Elizabeth Hurley guest-stars. 'Elizabeth' was
written by Peter Tolan and Denis Leary, and was directed by Tucker Gates.

Sunday, March 10, 8:30 pm ET/PT -- 'Anger': Mike's ugly altercation with a
cab driver is captured on video and broadcast on TV. Now he must attend anger
management classes and, to make matters worse, he has chosen this week to
quit smoking and drinking. Meantime, Ruben's mother wants him to apologize to
a perp after Ruben shoots him. 'Anger' was written by Mike Martineau and
directed by Tucker Gates.

MTV NETWORKS EXPANDS SUITE OF CHANNELS FOR DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION WITH FOUR
NEW OFFERINGS FOR KIDS AND MUSIC FANS

MTV HITS AND NICKTOONS TV TO DEBUT ON CABLEVISION SYSTEMS

Santa Monica, CA, February 26, 2002 - MTV Networks, a division of Viacom
Inc. (VIA and VIA.B) today announced that the company is expanding its suite
of channels available for digital distribution, launching four new 24-hour
channels for kids and music fans. The new channels include MTV Hits, MTV
Jams, Nicktoons TV and VH1 Mega Hits, expanding and strengthening MTV
Networks' digital offerings to thirteen services. In addition to carrying
MTVN's core digital services, Cablevision is the first operator to sign on
for services from the new package and to add MTV Hits and Nicktoons TV to
their iO: Interactive Optimum digital service line-up.

"Each of these channels was created in response to our audience's tastes and
demands. We believe these new channels will help our affiliates as they
continue to expand their digital business and help them grow their cable
modem business. It's clear that our audiences are early adaptors and cable
modem users. They are already moving seamlessly between television and the
Internet and they are looking for applications that make it easier to move
from screen to screen. These new channels provide them with that
experience," said Tom Freston, Chairman and CEO, MTV Networks.

"We are thrilled that Cablevision stepped up first by signing up for MTV
Hits and Nicktoons TV and we look forward to working with them to roll-out
these new digital services and providing their subscribers with more of the
music they crave and Nickelodeon cartoons they love," said Nicole Browning,
President Affiliate Sales & Marketing.

MTVN's core digital services include: VH1 Classic featuring the greatest
music from the 60's, 70's and 80's with nearly 12 million subscribers;
Noggin, the innovative, commercial free educational network from Nickelodeon
and Sesame Workshop, now available in over 22 million homes; and Nickelodeon
Games and Sports (GAS) with 10 million subscribers. Nick Too, VH1 Country,
VH1 Soul, VH Uno, and MTV Espaol complete MTVN's digital offerings. MTV2,
with 40 million subscribers, has both analog and digital carriage.

New Digital Offerings
MTV Hits will program the best Pop music from some of the hottest artists
including Britney Spears, Blink-182, *NSYNC, Destiny's Child, and more. The
24-hour digital music channel focuses on the younger end of MTV's
demographic, serving the 12-24 market with the music and artists they love.

MTV Jams will feature the best Rap, R&B, Hip-Hop, and Soul music and
artists. This new offering will including artists such as Alicia Keys,
Jay-Z, India Arie, DMX, R Kelly, and more. MTV Jams will replace MTV X
across all digital cable services.

Nicktoons TV, the first ever 24 hour channel devoted to Nickelodeon
animation, encompassing the cartoon world created by the number one network
for kids, will feature everything from classic Nick originals like Doug and
Ren & Stimpy to their cutting edge counterparts like Jimmy Neutron.
Nicktoons TV will replace Nick Too in some areas on the west coast.

VH1 Mega Hits, an all video channel featuring the biggest hits from all
popular genres from the 90's and today giving music fans a destination
24-hours and day, seven days a week, for the VH1 music and artists they
love. The channel will feature artists such as Creed, Aerosmith, Dave
Matthews Band, Janet Jackson, Jewel, Goo Goo Dolls, No Doubt, Madonna, Lenny
Kravitz, Jewel, Mary J Blige, Sheryl Crow, Bon Jovi, Nirvana.

MTV Networks owns and operates the cable television programming services
MTV: Music Television, MTV2, Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, TV Land, VH1, CMT:

Edwards, who will be leaving the series at the end of the season --In
May, Oscar winner Michael Douglas will guest-star on "Will & Grace"
as a gay policeman --In addition to the previously announced live 75
anniversary celebration special on Sunday, May 5, NBC will also
feature a reunion of the "The Cosby Show," an "L.A Law" reunion
movie, a retrospective of Bob Hope's creative contributions to the
network as hosted by Kelsey Grammer ("Frasier"), Jay Leno's 10th
anniversary show, and a two-hour retrosective of "Must See TV" as
produced by Gay Rosenthal of VH1's "Behind the Music" --As part of
the 75th anniversary celebration, NBC will spotlight past stars such
as the "St. Elsewhere" cast who will appear on "Scrubs" and Melissa
Gilbert ("Little House on the Prairie") on "Providence" (other
crossovers of classic and contemporary series will be announced later)

Said Sassa: "It is really no surprise that we dominated February
outside of the Olympics because that's what we've been doing all
season. We're number-one for the season in 18-49 which is the thing
that we covet most - and we're number-one in some other trivial demos
of 18-34, 25-54 and total viewers. And we're the only major network
that's up this season versus last season in 18-49. Now our lead over
second place is 1.2 ratings points over Fox and that's the biggest
lead of any network in four years. It's not because of the Olympics,
if we take away, if we consider all the regular programming, we're
still 1.2 rating points ahead of Fox in 18-49.

"We've got 12 of the top 25 programs among adults 18-49 and they're
spread across five nights of the schedule. We've got the number-one
rated new comedy in OEScrubs,' the number-one rated new drama in
OECrossing Jordan,' and OECrossing Jordan' is the number-one new show
on any network in any measure you want to go with. Since adding
OEFear Factor' to our Monday-night lineup...we're now in the hunt.
OEFear Factor' has now increased that hour by 51 percent and OEThird
Watch' behind it has gone up 21 percent in that following hour.

"We're also number one in regular programming on Tuesday nights and
we're dominating Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. That means
five nights of the week we're in first place and challenging for
first. And OEFriends' remains a real phenomenon. In its eighth
season, it's the fastest-growing comedy off a huge base, it's up 15
percent in 18-49 and Thursday remains the highest-rated night.
OEFriends' remains red-hot in February with special guest star such
as Matt Damon who brought record ratings to OEWill & Grace.'
Finally, all three OELaw & Order'dramas are winning their hours in
total viewers and the two established OELaw & Orders' are having
their best numbers ever."

Sassa also had good news from NBC's non-primetime programs. "In
other dayparts, we're number one once again in latenight. The
OETonight Show' has now won 24 straight sweeps in 18-49 and OEConan'
remains undefeated in its time period. We're also number one in
morning news, evening news and Saturday morning public affairs shows.
Our daytime lineup is on track to win February among women 18-49,
which would be the fifth time in seven sweeps, including some ties.
And as we said, NBC Sports had a great month with the Olympics, and
it's important to note another nice milestone was that the Daytona
500 had the highest-rated telecast in 18 years of being on TV."

Zucker emphasized NBC's strong performance throughout the season
apart from the welcomed Olympics boost - one that is projected to put
NBC ahead at season's end by the largest margin of any network in
four years.

Said Zucker: "It's a great time for us. We were having a spectacular
season prior to the Olympics and now the tremendous performance of
the Olympics has set us up to close out the season in a great way.
What I want to do this morning is look ahead. But I want to
emphasize again one thing that Scott said because it's so important.
We will win this season by the largest margin of victory by any
network in four years. This in a season that many had predicted
would mark the end of NBC's dominance. Instead, our dominance has
only grown and the fact is we would have had this huge margin even
without the Olympics. The Olympics, of course, has made it even
bigger."

In summation of NBC's promising future in all dayparts, Zucker said:
"We're obviously thrilled at the position we find ourselves in today.
And as we go forward, I think the story that we see is one of
continued stability. A new deal with Katie Couric means that we'll
continue to be the leader of the morning; a new deal with Conan
O'Brien means that we'll continue to be the leader in late night; and
the new deal with OEFriends' means that we'll continue to be dominant
in primetime."

In addition, Zucker also welcomed Bright, Kauffman and Crane of
"Friends" as he lauded the resurgent series. The creative team
admitted that they are still debating how the popular comedy will
conclude this season before they consider the next. However, they
confirmed that the character of Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) will give
birth to a baby in the season finale in May.

The producers also joined NBC in announcing that Alec Baldwin ("Pearl
Harbor") will guest-star in an episode of "Friends" on Thursday,
March 28 (8-8:30 p.m. ET) as a new boyfriend for Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow).

Said Kauffman: "We are absolutely overjoyed that we're going to be
able to do this for another year."

dcp has been perpetrating crap with Fox for some time now. They did
the first WWTBAM knock-off too (mercifully I have forgotten its name).

Oddly enough, their web site [http://www.dickclarkproductions.com/]
does not mention any of these true classics.

Ooh, a three-week run -- showing real faith there, fellas. Not too
surprising, considering that unless I'm mistaken, prime time sketch comedy
hasn't done well since the days of "In Living Color." (I'm counting Wayne
Brady's summer series as as variety show, not sketch comedy.)

Whoa, I'm blinded by the star power!

OK, enough sarcasm. I'm excited because someone is sending me a VHS copy
of "An American Family," which I've always wanted to see (was too young to
catch its original go-round). Yes, the fact that I'm the webmaster of
http://www.loudfamily.com partly explains my interest.

Still curiously unexcited about Survivor 4 (probably 'cause the 3rd one
just ended),

CNN SHAKEUP: CARVILLE, BEGALA HIRED FOR 'CROSSFIRE', BILL PRESS OUT;

**Exclusive**

CNN suits are set to drastically makeover one of the network's top
performers: CROSSFIRE will soon feature Clinton stars James Carville
and Paul Begala from the left, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Carville will host the show 1 out of 4 weeks, with Begala picking up
the rest, according to sources.

Robert Novak and Tucker Carlson have both committed to continue on
the right as the show expands to an hour-long format. Executives hope
to move the show out of the studio to an auditorium at George
Washington University.

CNN top Walter Isaacson is said to be the mastermind behind the
CROSSFIRE makeover, fighting hard to sign Carville.

"Lots of money for James, and not much work," said a source close to
the man affectionally known as the 'Ragin' Cajun'.

Carville will be paid an anni of upper-six figures, according to
insiders.

Host Bill Press is sent to the showers and becomes a 'CNN

The CROSSFIRE shakeup is a direct challenge to CNBCMSNBC's HARDBALL.

I thought "Watching Ellie" tonight was excellent, A+.

Oh my God, what on earth will America do without having a laugh track to cue them that it is OK to laugh?? Maybe they should put up a flashing super now and then that says "funny part."

Speaking of supers, our could almost hear Brad Hall and company screaming all the way from the left coast when NBC's promotion automation put their corny "coming up next" banner right over "Ellie"'s beloved countdown clock twice during the show. I'd bet a roomful of minimalist furniture that that will NOT happen next week.

I liked all the finely-tuned steadicam work. When do you EVER see expert steadicam and clever cinematography in a half hour TV comedy? (OK, besides "Captain Nice.")

There's a lot of good detail in the sound mix too, which you can NOTICE 'cos there ain't canned hoo-hawing all th' damn time.

Obviously there's a big "Curb Your Enthusiasm" influence and nothing's wrong with that. Lastly Julia L-D is really funny... she is working hard... it looks to me like exhausting work. I also like the lack of an show open and the lack of a show close -- who need 'em anyway other than the Nielsen families. "HELLO YOU ARE WATCHING A NEW SHOW NOW...."

The the funniest thing of all about this episode, by far, is that NBC thought this show wasn't funny.

I'm sure someone will correct me, but I don't think "Pinwheel" was

Prediction: unless things change radically before the end of this
calendar year, ER will start to skid next season and the show will
wrap in 2004, if not 2003. With Friends heading into the sunset next
